      ❛ yeah? well, it hasn’t happened yet. don’t know if you’ve noticed but i make this face a lot. ❜ her eyes travel away from his face to look out on the horizon of the planet, dust rising like smoke & the light of the stars reflecting on the motes like a spectrum; it’s idyllic, but then she comes back to reality at the pile of corpses on the ground in the distance. war, mars. remember it.

      ❛ i didn’t ask to be commander shepard. ❜ a lifeless shrug, brows furrowing -- her head snaps back to him then, & for a moment she thinks the question means something else: ❛ what? ❜ & eden prime flashes in her head, the bodies of colonists turned into husks, mutated into abominations. virmire, her impossible choice, something that she still hates herself for. horizon, people frozen & stolen by the collectors, someone she had called a friend knocking her back to her own death. the collector base, where her fight came to a head, where she could’ve lost everything. menae, turians twisted into something disgusting. war. war. that’s right, war. she's back then, realizing what he meant, an awkward breath of air as a sigh.

       ❛ so i’ve heard. ❜ her voice isn’t mocking but rather concerned -- a frown stretches across her face when she notices him recoil from his own touch on the wound upon his face. she crosses her arms, leaning forward toward him in an attempt to seem bigger ( despite the fact that he still towers over her ). her expression only becomes more severe when she speaks -------

       ❛ anyone ever tell you that you’re dumb? -- oh, wait, i do on nearly a daily basis. come on, ghost, i can’t believe you rushed directly into a horde of husks. you could have at least waited for me. ❜

KAIDAN.

HE  DOESN’T  ACKNOWLEDGE  HER  GREETING  ,  and  it  isn’t  malicious  in  intention  ,  but  rather  a  security  in  the  knowledge  that  she  won’t  be  a  voice  o’er  his  shoulder  for  much  longer  .  taps  fingertips  soundlessly  ‘gainst  window’s  pane  as  the  onomatopoeia  of  her  footfalls  affirms  his  thoughts  ,  brings  her  closer  .

A  RIGHTWARD  GLANCE  ONLY  AS  she  enters  his  periphery  ,  seats  herself  upon  the  viewing  couch  and  equals  his  own  habit  of  gazing  unseeing  into  the  abyss  .     (     it’s  a  lot  heavier  ,  when  he  puts  it  into  words  like  that  .     )     ❝     —–     commander .     ❞     a  beat  ,  in  which  he  considers  something  else  to  say  .     ❝     are  you  all  right  ?     ❞

        ❛ define ‘all right’. ❜ she doesn’t mean for it to sound so heavy, but it does & that’s how she leaves it to hang in the air. in all honesty, she didn’t know why she had come down with the intent of visiting him. she had felt strongly that there was something she needed to say, to express, to clear the air somehow despite there not being any apparent bad blood ( but could she really tell anymore? ). yet now that she is in his presence she can’t find the words, & she simply feels void, empty, & a bit on edge. nothing was normal anymore, everything always felt slightly off in the way that it wasn’t obvious, but one just knows, can feel it. 

        ❛ i .. i don’t know why i came down here. i thought i did but .. i don’t know much of anything these days, apparently. ❜

        ❛ ------- hey. ❜ it’s only a word, a singular one at that, & yet it took so much effort to allow it to slip, to even form it in her head before speaking it. her nerves are obvious by the shake to her voice, but she doesn’t acknowledge it ( based on the philosophy that if you feign ignorance of something, it isn’t real ). she can’t find it in herself to say anything after that, instead sitting down next to him, elbows resting upon her knees as she stares out into the infinite sea, the uncaring & cold heart of the cosmos.

a softer world sentence starters. | accepting.

     the urge to shake her head, say ‘no’ & make him see her point of view is something she can barely resist. but that would make her a hypocrite, & she felt she already had a bad enough reputation in his eyes as it was ( & she knows he doesn’t see that of her, that he never has seen her as a bad person, but she sees it of herself ). the war was far from over, & most days it felt as if it had just begun. 

     ❛ don’t -- ❜ flow stops after only a word, expression muted. she’s visibly distressed, thinking deeply, but she stops abruptly & pushes off the surface she had been resting on. push the emotions down, pack them up & hide them away. deal with them later.  ❛ don’t think like that, kaidan. if you’re not really happy, you are genuinely miserable. how about real happiness over all else? ❜ her smile is broken. mars knows he can see through it -- she was never particularly good at shielding her feelings. in fact, she was quite sensitive -- but despite that, she never willingly chose to let it break her, not in front of her crew. everyone knew, but it went unspoken -- the commander cares more about others than she ever has of herself.

*SMARTASS.

Ryder knew who she was. 

She wasn’t stupid , she watched the vids with her dad-  who himself was an N7 operative. So even though this woman was saving the galaxy, Freyja Ryder could

honestly                                 care                                                                     less. 

No one took her kills. Especially not after she had spent hours  getting into an acceptable position. She didn’t want to give up  just yet. Fryr always told her she was a bit too aggressive with people who outranked her. Evidence being the C-Sec academy  incident that happened when ryder lashed out at one of the  teachers , a turian.She crippled him , shaved his assistant bald  and ended getting locked up in a holding cell for a few weeks ,  her dad said he’d’ve gotten her out sooner but he thought it was, and I quote ‘too damn funny’ .Since then everyone who outranked her had always dealt with a freyja who was rough around the edges.

“I know who you are . No need for introductions. Call me Contact R. I work with the shadow broker and this was an important mission  meant for me. So now I get to ask. What the hell are YOU doing here?”

      how fun, an entitled smartass. mars remembers when she was the same -- the galaxy was out to get her, nobody else was to be trusted, & what she wanted, she got ( at any cost, she may neglect to acknowledge ). a smile creeps onto her face, then, at the memory -- this girl is just like i was at that age. a raise of an obsidian brow, red-painted lips parting to offer a slight mockery.

      ❛ the shadow broker, huh? funny. i happen to be here for the shadow broker as well. ❜ she turns on her heels then, armor-clad back to the obviously angered girl. her omni-tool pops up, taking a few readings on the now, uh -- extremely dead man before her.  ❛ let me tell you something. you want credit for things? don’t wait, don’t hesitate. you took too long, & i beat you to the chase. welcome to the galaxy, contact r. ❜
