Love is a verb! Self love isn’t a warm fuzzy feeling, it is compassion and action in support of yourself!

And yes, this includes having compassion for the bully in your head. Unfortunately that part is also you and deserves as much of your understanding as the rest of you.

I don’t want to critisize what makes other people happier, because it’s great that it’s supposedly made them happier. But I don’t like this anti-realism, anti-self improvement, pro-narcissism ideology that seems to be popular now. What’s marketed as “self love” seems like refusing to agknoledge that you have problems, and I want to acknowledge I have problems, which often doesn’t mean being nice to myself. And I hate that people consider that a “bad” thing.

You don't have to be nice to yourself, but you do have to be good to yourself. Nice here means prioritising good feelings, and being good means prioritising your well-being. Often it doesn't feel great to put well-being first.

You will never beat a problem out of yourself. Lots of people who hate themselves have tried, and all of them are equally convinced that they're the first human being who will finally make it work. They treat themselves the same way that people they despise treat others, and then they're surprised they don't have any self respect. Why would they? I've never respected anyone who treats people like shit. But swinging to the opposite extreme of pretending you're the bees knees and sucking your own dick doesn't do shit either.

If you go to bed early instead of staying up to watch Netflix, that's not pretending your problem of staying up doesn't exist. It's the opposite. It's not nice to tell yourself to go the fuck to bed instead of watching your favourite show but it is good for you, and if you do fuck up and can barely function the next day it is the good thing to understand that you can't make a miracle happen when you're sleep deprived, so you go easy on yourself and resolve to go to bed early the next night. There is zero reason to treat people who have problems like shit, so there's no reason to do it to yourself either.

But doing the nice thing, chanting affirmations in the mirror, trying to cultivate warm and fuzzy feelings - I don't think that actually works. That method of self love has always seemed a bit self obsessed to me. I've never had warm fuzzy feelings towards myself and I don't think I ever will, but I much prefer being someone I can rely on and trust to support myself, and that's done a lot to combat the self loathing I used to have. It's done more to actually fix my problems than hatred ever did.
