Do people not read anymore?

I’m not talking about books, but just reading in general.  Nobody reads anything anymore. We don’t read signs that tell us if we are going in the right direction, we don’t read signs for store hours, we just don’t read.  I had already been planning this ‘reading’ entry when it was so evidently made clear yesterday at work.  Numerous people walked in the store (note they had the ability to walk in; the doors weren’t closed or locked) and asked me if we were open.  I felt like saying “If you just read the hours marked on the side of the door you entered freely, you would have seen that yes we are indeed open and that for another 3 hours!” Or today when customers asked me the price of an object when it is clearly marked right in front of them.  As a society, we truly are dummying ourselves. I mean, why be smart when I have a phone that is smart for me? Hopefully enough people become aware of this saddening fact and teach their children how to think and do for themselves instead of relying on the technology in their hands.

Listening, but don’t hear

How is my generation not deaf? Last night as I sat in my apartment, numerous cars drove by with their music so loud it vibrated my walls! How do you listen to music that loud?! Why do we feel the need to shut everyone out and be in our own little worlds? When did human interaction become something we yearn to get away from? There was one car that parked outside my 3rd floor bedroom window.  My walls were shaking from the intensity of their music already, but when someone opened their car door...let’s just say I was very surprised my window didn’t shatter.  This continues to prove that my generation is becoming a solitary one.  Walking around campus you rarely see anyone talking to someone.  Everyone has their headphones in, wanting to be left alone. We listening to music that effects our mood, but we don’t hear the world and all the things it has to offer. Is it even possible for us to unplug from music for a day and just listen to the life around us?

Texting Rant

Put down your phones for a moment people! In our society today, no one talks face-to-face, we are all on our devices.  Rarely do you see someone who doesn’t have a phone in their hand, or who aren’t FaceTiming with someone while walking! Texting while driving accidents(don’t get me started on that subject) are gradually passing DUI accidents.  What is going on folks?!  Can we please just take a minute to look at the world around us instead of looking at it through our phones?!  I mean, when did we find it socially acceptable to take pictures of our food before we eat it? I sometimes don’t even understand my generation or want to be a part of it! Put the phone down and live life for a while! Okay...rant over.

Just a line to say I'm living that I'm not among the dead, Though I'm getting more forgetful and mixed up in my head I got used to my arthritis to my dentures I'm resigned, I can manage my bifocals but God, I miss my mind For sometimes I can't remember when I stand at the foot of the stairs, If I must go up for something or have I just come down from there? And before the fridge so often my poor mind is filled with doubt, Have I just put food away, or have I come to take some out? And there's a time when it is dark with my nightcap on my head, I don't know if I'm retiring, or just getting out of bed So, if it's my turn to write you there's no need for getting sore, I may think I have written and don't want to be a bore So, remember that I love you and wish that you were near, But now it's nearly mail time So I must say goodbye, dear There I stand beside the mail box with a face so very red, Instead of mailing you my letter I opened it instead
