instead of making fun of 12 year old artists on the internet who don’t have a grasp of anatomy can we make fun of the 30-something paid comic artist dudes who don’t understand that women have spines and draw them in impossible poses just for the sake of making jerkoff material for other gross 30-something men
Please.
orrrrr we could just not make fun of anyones art in general and let people draw what they enjoy!
if its sexist then make fun of it. ill lead the charge. fuck u rob liebfield and ur impossible sexe anatomy
or yknow dont bc ppl should be allowed to express themselves thru art how they please and u have no right to police that
except when it has a real, actual effect on others. there are a lot of terrible fucking things people can draw and while artistic freedom is for sure to be encouraged when u get down to it like… technically nobody can stop you from drawing whatever u want. what it boils down to is “is this morally correct and what does this say about me as a person?”
yes it’s another issue that it is often described as “30 year old gross men” drawing stuff but….lol…. when ur a young girl and u see men who are waaaay the fuck older than u drawing this stuff u can find ANYWHERE wouldnt you find it unsettling? most of the time these sexualized images play on borderline pedophilia. and if you like comics and all you see are these images it’s not exactly cultivating a positive relationship with personal body image nor does it make u feel welcome to engage with the comic community at all.
jack off material is one thing but if you’re an artist you have to understand you have an audience. if you’re playing to the 18+ crowd then by all means have fun!!! but if you’re making comics which are arguably going to be picked up by young kids why would you feel the need to insert these things into here? what r u expressing by doing this? if you dont have an answer then i guess?? be prepared for criticism which….is also a huge part of growth as an artist?
idk man i don’t think this is really comparable for artists who are making a good living off of sexualizing young women equivalent to generalized policing of art. drawings can still cross a line and we, as artists, need to understand that it’s there
Ggg Might take this down because I dont really wanna get too caught up but this kind of reminds me of some topics I’ve been over in some college courses. The thing about drawing these girls in impossible poses with impossible bodies wearing thing revealing clothing is that it can really objectify woman. And this happens everywhere in the media already. Im trying to word this in the most polite and practical way here so bear with me. Most of the time these poses for women are drawn to show off the butt and the bosom right? They’re twisting in impossible ways so that no matter their pose the audience can see the whole package. And while the comic industry is changing, a lot of those superhero books were and still are aimed a lot at men and boys. And I think if both the girls and the guys in the comic were portrayed the same way it may not be as much of an issue. But…thats not the case. Girls are twisting in strange positions to show off what guys wanna see and guys are just doing cool poses that look powerful and awesome most of the time. Thus the girl is something pretty to look at, an object, and the guy is the thing you really aspire to be. Is this always the case, no. But there is a significant amount of it to make an impact. And this is in everything, commercials, billboards, magazines, girls are constantly posed to be things to look at. And it has a real presence in the mentality of people. Guys and girls are taught that girls are objects. Girls inherently pick up this message that they are things to be looked at, to not talk back, to just take it. Guys are taught to take advantage of this. I want to really emphasize the taught thing because guys and girls are not inherently one way or another. But we live in a society that really conditions people to try and fit into gendered roles. Guys, gotta be macho, gotta get girls, gotta have a lotta sex, and if they dont, then they get ridiculed. So no I would not say that men are bad but there is a lot of stuff out there telling them to treat women like crap. And these comic books that bend reality so guys can see a hot babe in skimpy clothing really is only supporting that. So yea, maybe it doesnt affect a girl’s mentality directly. It might not seem to have a major direct impact on anything, but it is perpetuating a mindset that can and has been harmful to both men and women. So while it seems that its as easy as not looking at that book. That doesnt change the fact that some guy, young or old, might be picking it up and starting to see women as this sexualized object. Its subtle, it is, but it can be very dangerous. Gosh I hope that explains some things and doesnt sound too pushy or mean. Edit: Im putting some article links here. Im sorry its really hard to access scholarly articles since Im not a student anymore but I tried my best to find some peer reviewed stuff about the topic. http://guilfordjournals.com/doi/abs/10.1521/jscp.1994.13.3.288 This one doesnt allow access to the article itself but take a good look at the citations. That is a lot of research on the topic of objectification of women and the harm it has on them. http://pdxscholar.library.pdx.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1090&context=mcnair http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/the-problem-with-female-superheroes/ http://www.fantasy-magazine.com/non-fiction/articles/the-objectification-of-women-in-graphic-novels/ I hope this helps with making this not seem like Im being a killjoy here. There is a lot of research on this type of thing.
