Fun facts about your sign here
Do it for your foremothers that never got the chance.
I always think this is so funny as an angle to take because I doubt most if any of the people sharing stuff like this know all the other grueling advocacy and activism these women participated in, as well as the fact the white women actively undermined the efforts of all those other women, hence our later ability to vote.
And while they believed the right to vote was necessary because it would (theoretically) allow marginalized people to run for office and etc, very few organizers or conferences stopped at voting.
Black women started schools where they could teach their kids to read because they weren’t allowed in any schools before that. That allowed poor whites to become educated as well. There were public displays of civil disobedience. Women were arrested and experienced violence and abuse. They continued grassroots organizing.
The issue isn’t with voting. The issue is that all y’all ever fucking do is vote. And then you sit on your ass for the two years until the next election. And every time something bad happens you blame people who didn’t vote instead of the people who voted for fascism and oppression, and you put no fire under the seats of “liberals” who allow and support the atrocities on the right.
I really wish people could grow up and stop reducing the work of millions of women, and people in general, to “uwu they would want you to vote”. They would ALSO want people to understand that the right to vote was a stepping stone towards achieving liberation. It will not create liberation.
And the way our system works now, having not been updated in any meaningful way since the big ol’ group of slave owning white men created it, does not make nearly the strides it did previously.
These women published entire bodies of literature, theory, manifestos, pamphlets, and speeches that went so far beyond voting.
Stop using our history for your superficial moral politics. Almost all these women would’ve spat in your face.
