hi... due to my poor (worsening, it seems.) health situation i had another crappy month where i've gotten through nowhere near enough of my work and i am in a really awful spot financially, which is to say right now i can't afford rent, pain medicine (and i am in dire need of it right now 😔), phone bill, or groceries. i have no choice but to ask for help if it's not a problem and isn't going to put you in a bad spot financially in turn.

there's a certain rhetorical sleight-of-hand i often see on this website wherein the phrase "media literate" is deployed but what's meant is more along the lines of "sharing a specific interpretation of a text." the skills that make up media literacy have to do with the ability to understand what's being said in the text and how that message is conveyed mechanically. two people can be equally media literate and will still interpret the message radically differently if, say, one is a card-carrying marxist and the other votes tory. and that's not me saying that both are equally 'correct,' because i don't think that lol. but you can't resolve that type of disagreement by 'teaching more media literacy' (often a euphemism for economically inaccessible and culturally hegemonic university education) if you're ignoring the political and social interpretive frameworks and value systems that people are importing when they put their media literacy skills to use

the corollary is that some interpretations of a text ARE reactionary, but often that's not due to 'media illiteracy' and in fact, the assumption that the university functions as some kind of enlightening force is itself ALSO reactionary and doesn't engage with the political conflicts that are actually at hand

i don’t really care if there’s historical precedent for derivative work - of course there is, because all work is derivative. copyright is the source of the contradiction which upholds the myth that any media properties are “original”. it is important to understand then that, for example, dante’s divine comedy is not “bible fanfiction”, because there is no such thing as fan work without intellectual property. because copyright guarantees its owners with the power to monopolize a given work (to censor and destroy any “competition”), it follows that “fan work” necessarily describes the works that are legally unprotected and economically precarious (thereby making their authors legally unprotected and economically precarious). in this context, free PR for the ghouls that withhold your actual freedom to use any work as you see fit and to materially benefit from your creative interpretations is like including a nice big tip for your landlord with your rent. that is what i mean when i say that fanart is evil lol
