I actually think the lack of race politics is probably the weakest factor in rgu (as well as the fandom) bc like. the dynamics of patriarchy are in fact inextricable from the logic of colonialism in many ways? and so it makes me feel crazy that everyone in ohtori is always like “let’s kill the one brown girl we know with knives for no reason” and then nary a single fan is like “this is surely not motivated by any sort of visual signifier of alterity that she may be assigned by a racializing gaze” and in fact some of them are even like “everyone who wants to kill her is right for that probably bc she’s evil”

thats because rgu's race politics is frankly bad and orientalist, see nanami goes to india to find spices episode. it is racist in a way that sort of beggars belief that the show actually intends to say something coherent about racialisation instead of just uh assigning the incestual sexual violence to the brown people in the show.

I hate rgu fan's refusal to accept the idea that the show is racist. anthy is a south-asian coded racialized character who unfortunately plays into a lot of stereotypes associated with south asians. the only reason we know she is south asian is because of the bindi on her forehead. akio as the representative of the patriarchy is south asian and plays into the "brown rapist" stereotype. the only reason anthy and akio were racialized was to Other them. to say that the show is a thoughtful depiction of racism and colonialism is to give the show far more credit than it deserves. to say that race is a blind spot in the show is doing much the same. that's not to say that any analysis of utena through the lense of race is worthless, it actually adds to the show's critique of the structures of oppression. especially since racism is kind of inseparable to them. but that analysis can go hand in hand with acknowledging the show's inherent racism. a lot of south asians, including me identify with anthy as a character and they have given a lot of excellent meta that enriches the show but i don't want anyone to use that fact as a card to deny her orientalized depiction.

to add to this, a lot of rgu fans who try to analyse the show through a racial lense will impose western ideas of race onto the characters, this feels like ignorance of the very idea that racism can exist beyond the white/poc dichotomy and it's racism within itself. every character in the show is japanese in a japanese setting, anthy and akio are racialized due to being the only south asians in a majorly japanese setting. any analysis of utena that doesn't take this fact into account is worthless.

the only reason we know anthy is indian is because of the use of bindis in anime to indicate a character being indian. as bindi = hindu = indian. Ignoring that there are a lot of south asian countries with hindu populations. Also, there is no other indication of them being indian through cultural signifiers. I have already talked about their racialisation being used to Other them and akio playing into the brown rapist stereotype. the only reason anthy was given brown skin was because she was inspired by lalah sune from gundam, which to my knowledge is a pretty racist series in itself. there is also the curry episode, where india is depicted as a wilderness filled with african elephants and no people beyond poachers

interview with the vampire was an accident. it wasn't supposed to be that good. the production approached and for a moment crossed into a queer television space that would have been extraordinary. but the unexplored terrified them. they needed to map the territory with structures they are familiar with, and so a Tumblr/subreddit gothic uptake of AR's the vampire lestat. it is exactly the radical reimagining AMC and Rolin Jones had in mind and executed, and they ensured the audience they needed would be there (s2's sudden post-show outsourcing to white YouTubers/participatory culture vultures) once the bag was secured. never forget the quickness with which the vampire lestat was announced and the excitement AMC, EPs, and Jones demonstrated once they were finally done with iwtv. never forget how the vampire lestat novel made talismanic appearances during early interviews and promotions. they don't even call it a gothic gay romance like Jones and AMC promoted interview with the vampire.

what the vampire lestat reveals is how blackness operates as a fetish, a a magical object that is at once grotesque in its capacity to withstand graphic body horror and mundane in that the mutilation and exhibition of black bodies has been, historically, a quotidian exercise. Blackness has value as a commodity fetish. For all the unnaturalness of this gothic horror show, what is most natural and not discussed in trades, by majoritarian fandom, the cast, the crew is the series' fascination with showing mutilated, disfigured, charred, burning, terrorized black flesh. What appears to be the true horror would be to show a black body reveling in their monstrousness, in their making a paradise out of hell.

Jacob Anderson's performance is the lever that turned a trapdoor into an escape route, and i am grateful for the work he put into Louis. going back to s2 finale interviews where JA looked at it as closure for Louis makes sense in light of the vampire lestat.

tl;dr: AMC's the vampire lestat channels it and its source material's anti blackness through and on the brown and black bodies previously viewed as characters, but have now flattened into narrative tools to pave the way for the rehabilitation of Lestat.

Wildfires in northern Ontario force First Nations to flee

Several wildfires are forcing members of a number of First Nations to flee their homes in northern Ontario.

“I had time to run home and pack a bag and get to the beach where the boats were waiting,” said a member of Namaygoosisagagun First Nation (Collins). “We literally had minutes to get on the boats and flee before it took our town. “Once we left my house finally after packing what I could in a pack sack, the fire was right behind our place.
