Just stopped reading A Star Pilot’s Heart I’m 80% through the sample and mmm not sure I’ll read this one.

So F!MC is meant to be a smuggler for the resistance against a big galactic empire. So far she has met three guys that I’m guessing will be love interests. 1. is her ex who apparently walked out on her and is now acting like nothing happened and I’m not into that. 2. is someone who she constantly flusters because it’s cute and while I’m down with that, she is also very clearly only using him for information and throws a tantrum and claims he failed her when he refuses to tell her classified information. 3. Is a turncoat who has been very polite and calm so far and all she has done is thrown accusations at him and been generally nasty for... no real reason? I mean, I get the suspicion but she is going out of her way to be a dick to him. So.. a solid ‘meh’ from me.

WOW So LI 1. talks about how traumatic it was to become a vampire, how he was forced into this brainwashing camp for ‘rehab’ so he would be ‘safe’ for the community again, how they forced him to give up his most prised possession and how he has to keep using spells just to stave off the inevitable. What does his best friend say? “Oh, I’ll just buy you another of (prised possession).” Why are you friends with this dude. Why is this other dude even considered a love interest?!

Currently reading The Fairer Hex and BOY the sexism is rampant The idea is that the magical world is so fucking backwards it might as well still be the Victorian era. Girl is forced to study at a male-only University for mysterious reasons. The students are complete trash to her. The love interests? All have excuses to not hang out with her, so she’s left alone with the bullying and harassment. The students literally bully her in front of the teachers and NOTHING HAPPENS. These men are supposed to be gentlemen? I don’t see it. I’m 46% in and I sincerely hope this bullshit doesn’t carry on forever. I’m not enjoying this, which is a shame because I usually love this author.

Oof this book So F!MC discovers she’s a princess and her father is the emperor. I’m all for it. Then suddenly at the 50% mark of the book, it’s dropped on her that she is expected to have multiple husbands, a male heir and be restricted to the planet while she’s pregnant. The kid is then to remain on that planet for its entire life. This planet is home to the people who 1. gave her ptsd, 2. kidnapped her grandmother, and 3. tortured her husband and murdered his family. Why did no one tell her about this major cultural shift? The author did a really monumentally shitty job of introducing this. F!MC’s reaction (she’s 5 months pregnant btw) is to have an anxiety attack and begin throwing up. She’s really fucking distressed over this revelation. Her father? Totally chill with this situation! When she tried to explain it to a cousin, their response was literally “Don’t be a prude”. FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK YOU She then expresses discomfort because they go to a beach and everyone is expected to be naked. “Oh, tiny little cousin, you are the most uptight little thing I’ve ever met.” Excuse me while I yeet this condescending fucker into a black hole.

So I’m reading The Space Merchants of Arachne and oof F!MC notices a girl looks at her cousin like she’s in love with him and points it out. The cousin has NEVER knew this girl existed even though he was constantly around her and then F!MC points the girl out and he suddenly wants to marry her? Like, she’s a waitress and he’s the richest guy on the planet. He asks her on a date, not two seconds later buys her a really expensive bouquet and then a REALLY expensive necklace? Shouldn’t she be freaking out over how much money he’s blowing on her? Also the cousin explains that he’s being so serious because this girl is interested in him and not his money... buuuut how do you know this? Because F!MC said so? Shouldn’t you get to know the poor girl before making life changing choices for her? Their relationship concerns me on SO many levels. This is a godawful way to develop a relationship. I’m only 7% into this book!

“We’ll prove that we love you!” “Oh I’ll only have sex with them this once.” Cue sex scene. Can’t y’all just like... Fix the damage you did, pay recompense and change your behaviour first? Like, switching from abusive habits and mindset does not happen overnight. No vagina, magical or mundane, can make a person change years of behaviour so quickly. My money is now on her sleeping with them and then doing the “it was only one time, I’m leaving forever!” and then she’ll get kidnapped by the Big Bad, the LIs will come save her and happy ever after. Just watch.

The story was getting cute and then... “We were being dicks to protect our family, our mother was judged a lot for having multiple partners.” “Oh that’s sweet!” “... She didn’t care what they thought and always supported us!” Soooooooo why did you continue to be dicks. F!MC forgives their abuse far too easily. I know this is a short story and it needs to keep moving but it still felt shallow. Also: “We were being hard on you because we knew you would mean something for us and we wanted to keep you away!” That... F!MC? Run. Fucking run. You deserve better than this shit.

To continue: Story five: Meow Baby A rich family comes to F!MC’s home every year and damages her front yard (pretty sure that’s trespassing and vandalism), now the three youngest sons are continuing the tradition of ruining the garden she puts a lot of effort into. She works 12 hour shifts and comes home to this bullshit. The guys are supposedly cursed into 3 cats. No idea why. I’m vaguely hoping it’s done to give them some fucking humble pie but I doubt it. They’ll just bully her until she ‘loves’ them and it’ll probably be gross and I will be mad. Sigh. Let’s see if I dnf.

I’m trying to read this anthology, Petting Them

Story one: Saving Merritt: Meh. The premise is that the F!MC was sent away from her beloved father to live with her mother because... reasons. She becomes an photographic journalist and comes back 15 years later because dear ol’ dad died. Dad was a cop. The three love interests were her childhood friends who are still totally into her. So like, cool premise. There is meant to be a mystery but it’s pretty fucking obvious the dad sent her away for her safety because there was a weird drug ring going on and one of the love interest’s dads is involved. The bizarre thing is, one of the LIs treats her like shit for ‘abandoning’ them, even though it’s very clear she was sent away unwillingly. She never gets the opportunity to express and work through her bitterness over the whole thing. AND THE DAD BECOMES BFFS WITH ALL THE LOVE INTERESTS? He literally raises them! Wouldn’t that put the boys in just as much danger? Nope. Apparently not because they’re BOYS. Honestly the dad just comes off as a dick for abandoning her. Didn’t finish it because it annoyed me so much. At least the dog was nice. Story two: Ten Cats Paranormal Society: Didn’t touch it. I burnt out on this author and her writing style just pisses me off. Story three: How to Date A Werewolf... Or 3: This one was doing okay... until suddenly the guys reveal they’re werewolves... except they don’t. They just start acting like they did and the F!MC is struggling to deal with it all because NOTHING IS EXPLAINED. Rage dnf’d. Story four: Feral Magic Literally stopped reading this because one of the guys continually acts like a childish dick to the F!MC and the other guys explain why and... it doesn’t excuse his behaviour. Grow the fuck up or gtfo, my dude. Am I just in too bad a mood for reading right now? I hope not D: Also F!MC was on her way to rescuing some kittens from a shelter that was about to be killed and THEY ARE NOT SAVING THE KITTENS. This is not okay.

So I’ve been reading this series called Curse of the Gods and man I am so conflicted. Book 1 started off great. the F!MC is hilarious, sassy and confident. She’s fun! She has an awesome best friend! They’re so close they consider one another as sisters. The M!MC’s are... meh. They’re dicks who are amused by the F!MC and decide she is their pet. This never really progresses beyond that, they ignore her opinions, don’t give a shit about anything she cares about unless it directly involves them, don’t really do anything in the story beyond respond to her behaviour, pick her up and carry her around, and while they show affection it just feels like affection for a pet than an equal. The descriptions for the M!MCs is also bizarre. They’re apparently huge and she is tiny and needs to be picked up to reach their shoulders, but then suddenly she can reach their faces to do a specific thing? We’re never given a specific height for them so I just imagine them the size of the hulk for entertainment purposes. There is a really interesting tiered social structure: Dwellers, lowest of the low, basically slaves/serfs. Sols, powerful beings who are training to ascend to godhood. Gods, the top tier, most powerful, etc etc. F!MC is a dweller. M!MC’s are pretending to be Sols but are actually Gods. The second book is just okay. The dwellers start to be unsatisfied with their role in life and death which is a really cool plot. Third book? A lot of weird plot points are brought up in this book and never addressed. The plot focus shifts from the dwellers to “what the hell is the F!MC?” and more to the Gods and their shenanigans. Fourth book: More of the same. We see almost nothing of the dwellers anymore and get a lore dump that completely contradicts the lore in book two. Book five is so far. I’m 19% in and not wild about it. The timeline for events is bizarre. One moment everyone is talking about a party happening that evening, then suddenly they’re all in their nightwear going to bed? The humour is very hit and miss. I don’t experience any second-hand embarrassment or anxiety because the F!MC is so confident in herself. However book 2′s humour is very much “lol you’re so dumb, F!MC!” especially from her love interests. Book four and five are relying heavily on making mentally unstable people the butt of the jokes which is a no no for me. They also use a character’s alcoholism as a joke. That sister the F!MC has? She had a love interest who died in book 2. We get nothing showing her grief over losing a lover. No development, no learning to move on from a dead lover. Instead? Book 4 has her being tormented by a god who apparently finds her attractive but shows it by forcing her to constantly be around him (to the point where he has sex with another woman while she is trying to sleep in the room) and he continually insults her. We’re never shown them bonding or shown any reason why they would be a good match romantically. What does F!MC do? ENCOURAGES THE RELATIONSHIP. Her sister does stand up for herself and tells the god to go fuck himself but they still get together and I don’t understand why this relationship is popular with the fans? It’s just abusive and immature. There is zero character development for ANY of the characters. I’m honestly only reading this series for the F!MC but even she doesn’t progress emotionally, she’s forever funny, sassy and confident. I don’t understand why this series is so popular.

I was reading Hidden in Smoke but it has triggered my anxiety something fierce. The F!MC is new to shifter community and has to go in front of the Council, the ruling group for shifters. Because she’s a mythological shifter she is considered rarer and there is more of an emphasis on breeding so her type of shifter doesn’t go extinct. So... she has no real agency. A bunch of middle aged men get to decide her future and she has no fucking say in any of it. This kind of misogyny triggers me so badly. It makes me really sad because I was enjoying the book and hoping to sink my teeth into the series. Now? I dunno. My day has to be scrapped thanks to the anxiety attacks, do I really want to risk losing more days and stressing myself out to continue reading?
