Okay, enough time has passed, I'm gonna talk about Welcome to Derry episode 8, so spoilers for those who haven't seen it. Like everything that ends, it makes me want to cry that this is the season finale, even though we all know we're gonna have 2 more seasons.
Pennywise played so much this episode. It was having so much fun the whole time. But what I really wanna talk about is its ego and how insecure it is despite the power it has. When It comes to it's confused af, it's like "Tf? I was just about to eat trashmouth's future mother, where in tf am I?" we can really see that this is the first time this has ever happened to the creature to be this confused and not exactly know what to do or make of the situation.
But enough about how cute it was when it was all confused. Let's talk more about how ironic it is that it immediately disliked being called Bob or Robert. The way the creature is aggressive in claiming he isn't Bob Gray, and the way it frowns. This is all in spite of the fact that it took Bob's persona, took Pennywise the dancing clown from Bob, went so far as killing him for the form, and claiming it as its own, and the form even became the creature's favorite, only for it to be mad when addressed as Bob. It's insulted to be reduced to nothing but good ol' Bob. Insulted that it's recognized as human, as one of its victims as Bob Gray, whose life he cut short and persona he stole and continues to taint. And most importantly, it's insulted that it isn't recognized as its own from Bob because of the efforts it made in adapting Bob's form into its own. It believes that its Pennywise form is far superior from Bob's Pennywise. It believes it's a god after all of course, it's far superior to Bob, right?
That moment really gives us more of the creature's character and just how insecure it is. All that power, all that arrogance, and yet it's still so insecure, always wants to be feared, to be revered, and separated from humans, so when its treated like a human, it's immediately insulted it immediately assumes it's being called weak because to be human is to be afraid and to be afraid is to be weak.
I have no idea why, but it just feels like it wants to be validated for its power. I feel like part of the reason why it scares, and rage baits the fuck out of its victims, is not to just season the meat to make it tastier but also as a show of power to prove to itself and everyone to "look, I am an entity beyond your comprehension! I am filled with raw power and strip you bare and present you your worst fear! And then I will eat you and put your bodies in my lair as a reminder of my immense power!"
Maybe it's so insecure because, unlike its cosmic "brother" Maturin, its essence and originator, the Deadlights doesn't have sentient intelligence? As I've learned recently that the creature had to adapt to the physical and metaphysical laws of our reality and eventually developed its own personality and somewhat almost sentient intelligence separate from its origin, the deadlights. Since its connected to the deadlights, it would surely know of Maturin know that he has vast wisdom, unlike the deadlights, despite all its power is simply primal and doesn't hold a candle to Maturin's intelligence.
It would make sense, no? The staggering arrogance and ego are there to protect its huge insecurity that, despite all the power it inherently has, there are still entities at home that could kill it. Despite all the worlds it has eaten, it is still no match to Maturin and his power and intelligence.
