Recovery Centers America (RCA) has opened a new opioid treatment clinic in western New Jersey, according to Biospace. Bravo Healthcare Clinic opened in Somerdale on Aug. 13 and will give medically-assisted treatments (MATs) to its local community. This clinic will provide standalone MATs, just like RCA’s clinic in Trenton.
Thanks to the two U.S. senators for Illinois, five health organizations in central Illinois will receive $1 million to support treatment of opioid addiction, reports centralillinoisproud.com. Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL) and Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) secured the fund through the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration, in particular through the department’s Rural Communities Opioid Response Program. These five organizations will receive $200,000 each to support opioid treatment and prevent its abuse: the Southern Illinois University Center for Family Medicine, the Gibson Area Hospital & Health Services, Chestnut Health Systems, Inc., St. Francis Hospital, and the County of Macoupin. Sen. Duckworth declared, “Investments like these are critical in helping rural communities, and I will continue working with Sen. Durbin to ensure those treating and preventing opioid addiction have the resources they need to serve their communities.”

A weeklong opioid response conference begins today in Tulsa, Oklahoma, reports Tulsa World. Oklahoma State University’s (OSU) Center for Wellness and Recovery (CWR) will host the Opioid Epidemic Response event. Executive director Julie Croff stresses that the conference gives events for many groups, however. “There’s something for everyone at this conference,” she said. “It’s not necessarily just for individuals suffering from addiction.” The conference provides community resources, film screenings, educational seminars, and a town hall. Because the CWR hopes to reach the larger public through the event, the topics are diverse: medical and social work training, factors of opioid misuse, and chronic pain response.

Delaware officials have met in Dover to discuss community-based opioid responses, reports Delaware State News. The city’s Parks, Recreation and Community Enhancement Committee met with Kristan McIntosh, a senior consultant from NY-based Health Management Associates, to consider community response teams (CRTs). These teams would comprise local volunteers trained in overdose response. Members would especially highlight naloxone training and awareness.
Oregon opioid treatment centers will receive new federal funds, reports KTVZ. The U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services awarded a $1.5-million grant to 27 opioid treatment centers across the state. Each clinic receives $167,000 to increase access to substance abuse and mental health treatments. Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.) champions the grant as part of the national opioid response. “This money is just one aspect of the fight,” he said in a news release. “As Republican leader of the Energy and Commerce Committee, I will continue to work hard and lead the way on combating the opioid epidemic.”
New federal funding will support opioid response in Indiana communities, reports ABC157. From a $1.25 million grant, the Indiana Youth Institute will fund Big Brothers Big Sisters of Elkhart County (BBBS). BBBS mentors children one-on-one with community volunteers, and will receive up to $60,000 through 2022. Those funds will train volunteers to better serve children and families harmed by opioid addiction.
Colorado State is training communal extension agents to give opioid education to rural areas, reports The Colorado Sun. A $1.4 million program from the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture lets CSU ready five extension agents to reach isolated towns where few opioid resources available. These agents plan to form family-based preventive groups and community alliances for drug abuse prevention. Their training includes the Strengthening Families Program, a seven-week course that helps families improve their children’s drug refusal skills. Iowa State University developed the acclaimed curriculum to prepare rural opioid effectiveness.
Montana Healthcare Foundation CEO Aaron Wernham believes the state’s opioid response will improve because of the new funding. He’s specifically hopeful that those integrated therapies will help. Integrated treatment combines mental health specialists with primary care doctors to treat patients’ physical and emotional factors that can cause addictions. “All those kinds of social factors that can make it harder to heal, all in one place,” he said. “So, this emphasis on integrated team-based care in these grants is I think is very important and new.” As recently as 2015, Wenham’s company found that nearly 90% of addicted Montana residents didn’t receive care. But thanks to state and federal focus, addiction treatment providers and medically-assisted treatments have already become much more widely available.
