I think SOTR has made me realize that Snow's treatment of Peeta wasn't just about getting back at Katniss. That was a huge part of it, but I think he wanted - needed - to silence Peeta on his own too. Because this boy was so good with words that he was able to effortlessly win over the Capitol by manipulating their emotions, yet do so without ever betraying who he really was. He became the mouthpiece Snow couldn't speak out of, the pawn who turned the propaganda chess board into his playing field instead of bowing to the most powerful piece.
Seeing just how obsessed Snow was with controlling the narrative and dictating how the tributes were perceived in the 50th Hunger Games, I think he hated Peeta just as much as he hated Katniss. Not just because there was something about Peeta's personality that was reminiscent of Lucy's, but also because he couldn't be edited. He had to be silenced via torture and brainwashing because there was no other way to silence him. No amount of editing was enough to convince Panem that he was a monster, a villain, a brute, or any of the things Snow wanted people to believe the District citizens were. At every turn, he charmed the Capitol into seeing the tributes' humanity, the very thing Haymitch and Maysilee desperately wanted to prove in their own games. Snow had to break Peeta to shut him up and force him to be the villain. But even then, he still didn't succeed because the real Peeta bounced back in the end. He was living proof that Snow couldn't land on top, no matter what he did. His sincerity was more powerful than any propaganda, and I think deep down Snow was terrified of him.
(And sidenote, the shit Snow put Haymitch through adds context to why movie Haymitch looked SO proud of Peeta during the "If it weren't for the baby" scene. He used Snow's weapon of controlled perception against him, something Haymitch felt he couldn't defeat after he "won" his own games)
the whole Terry Pratchett vs Adaptations section of the book is brilliant, but nothing stands out as the whole ordeal between Terry, Tiffany Aching, and, I kid you not, Sam Raimi.
I cannot emphasize the psyche damage I took from that last sentence, I was completely unprepared:
