Just being able to be outside at all, with the breeze kissing her cheek and the sun warm on her skin, helped Spring immensely. She bent her head, with a slight smile, when he spoke. “You have the cause and effect backward,” she volunteered softly. “Autumn runs the flower shop so as to have something to do with all my flowers.” Her hand trailed over a nodding rainbow array of daylilies, somewhat out of season. “Anyway,” she said, “flowers don’t speak. They don’t judge. Trees don’t condemn. They simply are, and it is enough.”
Jay nodded with her explanation – well, that makes sense too. Either way, she seemed to get to enjoy what she loved no matter what. “You keep some pretty beautiful company then,” he commented quietly, mostly to himself, but it was loud enough that Spring might have heard. “I get that feeling though – being away from prying eyes or judging characters. Like… having your own safe space. It’s refreshing.” His senses came alive as he let the girl lead him through, the soothing aroma and sight of the colorful flora calming him, but he stayed grounded through the hand enveloped in his, taking deep breaths as they moved on slowly.
Spring lifted her free hand to brush her fingers over the flowers and leaves they passed, feeling their soothing coolness against her fingers. A few drops of water collected on her fingers. She wasn’t sure what to say in reply to Jay’s conversation.
The young man took in her silence, not sure if she was going to say something in return as it hung in the air. He had to admit that the silence was pleasant regardless -- not very awkward, and simply letting his thought stay between them. He watched her with curious eyes as she collected some dew onto her fingers, almost entranced by how she moved next to him. "Have you... always known that you liked plants?" he asked, wanting to hear her talk more about her plants. They seemed to make her happy, after all, and he wanted to know more about that.
