On Wednesday 7 July, Penates will be delighted to present a work-in-progress of a new project they are currently working on, which blends the sounds of wind recordings from the environments in which they have lived with domestic sounds.
On that occasion, they will share the evening with the duo comprising Gintė Preisaitė and Jon Lipscomb.

PENATES emerged in the early 2000s from a practice of listening before becoming a musical project. Rather than a band, it is a sound research project that moves across field recording, electroacoustic composition, improvisation, editing and sound manipulation.
The domestic sphere lies at its core. Home recordings, small acoustic events, everyday sounding objects and personal archives become the raw material for a practice that does not document reality so much as reassemble it. Over time, these traces are preserved, revisited, transformed and recombined through processes that evolve according to the materials at hand and the compositional strategies adopted.
The name PENATES refers to the ancient household deities of Roman tradition. Like those silent presences, the project is concerned with what inhabits the margins of attention: sonic traces, residual memories and details that would normally pass unnoticed. Rather than building an archive, PENATES keeps it in motion, allowing each recording to remain open to new relationships, interpretations and transformations.
While operating primarily within abstract territories, the project develops networks of relationships in which fragments of reality, memory and imagination may occasionally suggest unexpected narrative trajectories. When present, the voice enters the process as sonic material among other sonic materials.
Originally conceived as a studio-based and radio-oriented practice, PENATES only occasionally took the form of live performance. Its aim remains to shift attention away from its authors and towards the sounds themselves, and to the processes of collection, memory and transformation that run through them.
PENATES is the shared territory of Mat Pogo and JD Zazie.

JD Zazie and Peter Cusack perform live with field recordings, keeping the sounds largely in their original form. When recognisable, the recordings carry their own stories; in combination, they become playful and surprising. Their natural spatial depth sparks vivid imagery in the listener’s imagination. The duo aims to evoke spaces between music, storytelling and sonic filmmaking.

unsonic / Udo Noll is the founder of the website radio aporee ::: maps, a platform for site‑specific audio pieces in public space, as well as the project radio.earth, which explores listening in the context of ecological crises. In his presentation, Udo Noll introduces his long‑standing work with field recordings, their acoustic topographies, and their possible spatio‑temporal configurations in concrete environments and digital spaces.

miniLab is a project curated by Laura Leiner open to experimental and improvised music. After three years and thirteen editions, it has established itself as a space for musical experimentation.
Each event offers an unusual program that also focuses on women and FLINTA artists from Berlin’s experimental music scene.
This year’s edition will take place as a monthly event from June to October and will be held at the Ölbergkirche - Nebenraum in Kreuzberg.

Regarding the activities of our collective, June will begin with a few more events concentrated in Berlin. A world premiere by the duo of Mat Pogo and Samuel Hall for the Glass series curated by Munsha, on the 4th at 3x[t]er; a very rare concert by the Penates on Saturday the 6th for the K77 Performance Series; the presentation of Mat Pogo’s new zine, Yorgo Flat!, on Sunday the 7th at Anagram Space in Neukölln, an occasion on which Pogo and Matthias Koole will perform as a duo; and on Wednesday the 10th, a new fundraiser party for Villa K, for which another previously unseen trio will perform featuring Utku Tavil, Matthias Koole, and Mat Pogo.

On Wednesday June 10th BUSS: Big & Ugly Soundsystem and Soliversal set another fundraiser event for our beloved VK. Mat Pogo will open the dances together with Matthias Koole on guitar and Utku Tavil on drums.

Penates have been invited to perform on 6 June as part of the Performance Series, which takes place on the first Saturday of every month at K77 Studio.

For the 21st edition of blurred edges, Frequenzgänge presents six figures from the international improvisation scene, who approach the evening as a collaborative, open-ended sound laboratory: drummer Vasco Trilla is regarded as the ‘alchemist of percussion’ – with a radically exploratory approach, he transforms any object into an instrument and unfolds shimmering soundscapes. Vocalist and composer Sarah Buchner explores the voice’s versatility, ranging from intimate whispers to choral intensifications and surreal sound collages, whilst clarinettist and saxophonist Edith Steyer weaves jazz, new music, electronics and influences from ethnic music into detailed, noise-oriented improvisations. Using CDjs, turntables and mixers, turntablist JD Zazie blurs the boundaries between DJ culture, musique concrète and free improvisation. In works such as ‘Indoor compositions and decompositions’ or ‘Spectrum: Ghost’, cellist, vocalist and performance artist Paula Sanchez pursues an embodied understanding of sound in which material, space and improvised action intertwine. Finally, electric bassist Gunnar Lettow expands his instrument with preparations and effects to create a sonic laboratory oscillating between microtonal shimmering and eruptive outbursts. An evening full of unpredictable constellations and intense sonic spaces.
The event will take place on Saturday 30 May 2026 at 8.00 pm in Hamburg at Studio 16 | Barnerstr. 16 (on the left in the courtyard).
Frequenzgänge is a concert series for improvised music held in Hamburg. It takes place on the first or third Friday of the month and is organised by Gunnar Lettow.

This year will be the sixth edition of T.A.T.V. festival taking place at Galiläakirche in Berlin from 29 to 31 May.
JD Zazie will be performing on the first day of the festival, sharing the bill with Ployz & Kris Limbach, who will be performing “Signal Ruins” and with Jasmine Guffond, who will be presenting the sound sculpture “national interests”.

T.A.T.V. (Temporary Autonomous Tele Vision) is a temporary TV station transmitting 24/7 live concerts, performances of various disciplines and related talks. This program challenges the traditional and social media implied program-formats that tend to derive into commercial exploitation strategies of art and “content” in general. Everything is live filmed, programmed in real time and the “behind the scenes” melts into the staged, creating a amalgam between the two. The program itself discusses all present censorship guidelines through online distribution channels meanwhile strengthening the voice of artists.

REANIMATION ORCHESTRA
is an international open-structured multidisciplinary group of musicians united by their desire to blur the boundaries between the roles of composer, interpreter and improviser. Through our work over the last seasons, we have investigated what these roles mean to each of us, and enquired as to how we can fulfil them with openness, artistic integrity, and authenticity, both as a group and at an individual level. We present our work through a diverse range of sonic resources, encompassing string, woodwind and brass instruments, as well as live and pre-recorded electronics.
The Reanimation Orchestra is currently formed by seven Berlin-based musicians: JD Zazie (turntables, CDjs), Ingólfur Vilhjálmsson (bass and contrabass clarinets), Marie Takahashi (viola), Jack Adler-McKean (tuba, other brass instruments), Caroline Cecilia Tallone (prepared hurdy hurdy), Guilherme Rodrigues (violoncello) and Elo Masing (violin).
They will be performing on 20 May at Hošek Contemporary in Berlin and will share the evening with the trio formed by Daisy Payero (improvised theatrics), Joe Hertenstein (stonetabelpercussionkithybrid), Rieko Okuda (piano, viola).
