The many looks of Joe Burrow
Could you explain the differences between Jake and Joe's play? I think a lot of the issues with all this "system QB" drama and Jake vs Joe is that football novices like me see that Jake is still winning just like Joe did, throwing big balls down field and crazy plays by our receivers. And we don't see the subtleties of what is actually different about Joe and Jake, even though we (I at least) still know that Joe is better overall. Jake is balling out though! So proud of him and happy for our team that we have him!
Jake is a much less experienced thrower in the NFL than Joe, so the first thing you’re gonna notice is his ball at times is a little too “zippy” and not super catchable. That was actually a complaint about Joe during scouting and he’s done tremendous work to make his balls so easy to catch, so I’m hoping Jake can learn a bit for him for the sake of his own career.
Joe is better at reading the protections and can run a bit more off script at a faster rate; Jake is getting a lot of help from Ted up front who is scouting the defensive shifts to help Jake. That’s not to say that Jake isn’t getting to his second or third read because he is, but you’ll notice that he’s holding the ball longer because he’s literally not seeing it as fast as Joe does.
Jake’s TWP (turnover worthy play)% is a tick higher than Joe’s. That’s decision making and experience, obviously. He will be less cowboy the more he plays. This season, Joe has increased his redzone turnovers which was uncharacteristic for him, so I think in a normal year, you would see a larger gap between the two of them.
All in all, Jake has blown me away with how much he’s been able to absorb from Joe’s game because he in essence is playing a much sloppier, less finessed version. Credit also must be given to Zac and Brian as well for what they’ve been able to do. This has been tremendous game planning from the two of them.
