it always fucks with me that before benji, ruben was widely considered a Chill and Normal guy. like yeah, at worst, if you knew him when he was younger, you think "yeah, he's a hot-head. ex-con. had a lot going on when he was a kid. but a nice guy these days!" he spit in joanna's face and she let bygones be bygones enough to hear him out. his co-workers have a nickname for him! fucking roy lets him crash at his house six months out of the year! insane. and even after benji, people are still charmed by him. probably in part because of niall massaging his image, but still! people at the wedding laugh at his jokes, converse with him freely. his chaperone at the funeral regards him fondly, genuinely seems invested in his rehabilitation. it's so fucked, man!

You don't need to respond to this but I saw your post and yeah. It's disappointing to see that folks in a lot of fandoms are getting way too allonormative and heteronormative with their analysis of queer themes. It always seems to be with particular kinds of non-normative queerness, too (usually the ones that don't allow them to use their average shipping goggles). Work harder at your analysis and get weirder about all forms of queerness, please!

I think enough time has passed that I can release this into the void, but thank you for understanding where I was going with my analysis.

I think it's odd to pair an undoubtedly non-normative queerplatonic (or not, the world is your oysterrr) relationship and an expression of corrupted heteronormativity (incel ideology). I can see where the original OP wanted to go with it, a commentary on masculinity and how even in trying to emulate patriarchal ideals unconsciously, charfrank fails.

I just don't PERSONALLY think coupling queerness (which, Charlie is absolutely queer imo, he's semi-canonically asexual and canonically a crossdresser which has long had ties to transfemininity even though it's not in the most respectful way*) and incel ideology is a good idea. Even though I think there's merit in the underlying message of masculinity being complex and reinforced and reified unconsciously throughout Sunny in weird ways - because lbr all of the characters are unconsciously working within those paradigms (Dee with her misogyny and 'pick me' attitudes, Dennis as the 'aging play boy who is now failing at attractiveness', Mac as an obvious play on repression (more recently) and internalised homophobia, Frank as an old-school patriarch & who holds all of the power and so on - but I wish it'd just been said in that way.

And just because I chafe against it doesn't mean that the idea on the whole doesn't have merit. I think it's good to be careful about what queerness is paired off against, though. Not to say some queer folks can't be incels, some may well be, but it is a symptomatic facet of straight, cis masculinity. Men who are incels don't just pre-emptively reject all social contact as a result of their own self-loathing, they point to an perceived power imbalance and whine about it as though the world owes them something; the 'right' to take what they want and to be granted power for just being men, that their self-worth is biological and genetically pre-determined (which is bullshit) by their attractiveness and what they perceive as an inherent flaw that is impossible to negate.

If anyone is an incel in Sunny, it's Dennis.

*Note here that crossdressing has also deep ties to misogyny and the fetishisation of emasculisation wherein femininity is seen by men as deeply embarrassing and humiliating and that's a very easy feeling to eroticise, though in Charlie's case specifically I do NOT think his crossdressing comes from that lens, I think he specifically does it out of comfort and habituated routine.
