Kindred Spirits [Intro Drabble]
He was chittering (it was a he, she had checked. Much to his dismay.), waving his tiny squirrel arms, but all Doreen could catch was every second word. This was a dialect of squirrelese she wasn't familiar with. Maybe this was an eastern dialect?
The ginger shifted, crossing her legs the other way on the bed before scooping the distressed squirrel up into her hands, bringing him to her face. "Listen little guy, I think we're both a little frazzled here, lets just take a couple of deep breaths and start over." The pair of them took several breaths, and a few heartbeats later Doreen smiled. "Now, lets do this the right way. I'm Squirrel Girl. Er. Doreen. Yeah, Doreen."
She ran her fingertips across his glossy purple brown coat and tucked him into her lap, stroking him as he chittered once more. Nerves radiated off of him and her heart went out to the rodent. He was plucked where he had been from, and given to her without a word of real explanation other than social experiment and hive city. As well as a mystifying statement of 'you may find some familiar faces'.
Doreen perked, maybe there were other heroes here? Did any of the avengers get caught up in this? No, they were too powerful and smart for this. Only silly girls like her could get caught. Doreen bit her lip, buck teeth digging into the skin. Was Tippy Toes okay? Was she going to be okay with out her. After losing Monkey Joe, she couldn't bear to watch another squirrel companion of hers perish.
Especially this little guy.
Or well big guy. He was twice the size of the squirrels back home, with deep purplish fur and striking cream pointing. And he was rumbling contently as she stroked him. "So, what's your name big guy?"
He squeaked and she nodded, cocking her head. "Kavi? That's not a name I'm familiar with, but I'll try to remember it." her fingers stroked harder into his fur and his purr rumbled against her leg. "Don't worry Kavi," She chittered back, words slow so he could understand her. "I'll protect you the best I can, I promise."
Her tail flickered against her bed, and the ginger gave a soft sigh, gaze to the vacant wall of her room.
It was a promise she intended to keep. No matter how hard it was.
