honestly, if count olaf had just been nice to the baudelaires, he could probably have corrupted them into being his minions and gotten their money that way

Finally, and adult who's not only listening, but *engaging* with what they're saying. They needed this chance more than ever
I kinda despise the whole thing about no one being either wicked or noble in asoue. And they use Olaf and the kids as the main example for it.
The Baudelaires think they’re slowly becoming evil and Olaf suggests that too because they held Esme ‘hostage’, stole some keys, burned down the carnival, and accidentally hurt Dewey.
Meanwhile Olaf has actually murdered people, like…on purpose…
A Series of Unfortunate Events liberated me as a child in the way that it shows how utterly incompetent adults can be about children, like none of them care to understand how these children are feeling because they don’t see them as real living human beings, because they’re just kids! They don’t know any better!
literally them
(i made this btw with an og template ofc 😋)
everybody shut up she’s thinking
All my friends talk about like what they wish their aesthetics were or what their wardrobe looks like… you mean we don’t all wanna look straight out of the Asoue universe?
i feel like olaf was at his scariest in season one.. for one he put EFFORT into those disguises. the stephano/sham/shirley line up was actually diabolical i wont even lie
but i think what made him the most scary is the position the baudelaires were in during season one. they were still optimistic, as they thought adults would be able to help them. they did all that they could to get their guardians + mr. poe to believe them and when it didn’t work they still had hope. they also still clinged to the idea of nobleness and goodness then, the baudelaires in season one were just so innocent. they looked their youngest in season one as well, so it just made it so terrifying that this creepy man was following them around.
on his merry way, i see
asoue - the opera

Sometimes I think about just how DISTURBING the A Series of Unfortunate Events books are. I mean the first book literally has an adult man attempt to marry his fourteen year old relative that he adopted all to get the fortune left to her. This is after her and her siblings’ parents die in a mysterious fire. Oh, and said adult man locks a literal infant (described as being the size of a boot) in a bird cage that is dangling from a tower with the threat of dropping her if the fourteen year old does not marry him. And that’s just the first boook.
count olaf loves stealing from orphans so much that he keeps creating orphans just so he can steal from them
this isn't a shitpost, it's arguably actual canon
The best dynamic ever is evil adoption, actually. You know, when the hero is a child and the villain tries to legally or emotionally adopt them or become their mentor. It has so many options- do the villain feel paternal towards the hero? Do they have something to gain? Does the hero need a loving family? Is that villain a good parent? Are the villain and the actual guardian/mentor of the hero in a middle of a messy divorce? A+ dynamic.
count olaf: there's a time in every child's life where their parents are murdered by mysterious forces klaus: no there isn't violet: what are you talking about
