I’m perpetually puzzled by how much and yet how little we know about McKay. She’s nearly ten years sober, but Harrison is almost 12. So she didn’t get sober until he was two years old, which begs the question, did she start after he was born? Did she use during her pregnancy? Her response to the case where the child of an addict talks about her mother became sober when she was pregnant with her tells me she was likely sober then.

Fiona says that Cassie struggled from her mid to late twenties and she sobered up in her thirties. As of season 1 she was 42. With Harrison at 11 years old that makes her 31 or so when he was born. My thought is that she used in her twenties, sobered up at 30. Had Harrison, then relapsed at some point, finally totally sobering up at 33.

She also alludes to having been the target of someone with misogynistic tendencies. This of course could have been at any point in her life, but she says something interesting to Ogilvie in season 2 about why people turn to addiction. She specifically sites an escape from abuse. This piqued my interest.

Her ex Chad, does not come off as particularly abusive, I feel like she’d be much more wary about allowing him to play such a large role in Harrison’s life if that were the case. However it isn’t unheard of for a mother to concede that the abuse was entirely directed at her and have no fear for her children. It’s also possible he was abusive in some way and changed after they split but given that it’s likely she initially started using before they got together I find it unlikely.

She has a great relationship with her dad so it’s not likely him. My theory is this may be related to whatever misogynist in her life she spoke about in season 1. Maybe an ex before Chad that popped back up sometime after they were married, or was otherwise some kind of trigger for her.

Ugh I’m just dying to know more.

Thinking about how in 1x11 the daughter of the Hepitatis mom tells Mckay and Javadi that her mom was a drug user but quit the day she found out she was pregnant and Victoria tells her that "she sounds like a good mom" and Mckay smiles to herself AND THEN Mckay goes to the break room and tells Chloe that she is a damn good mom. Mckay tells her this after hearing Javadi call their patient a good mom!!!! She got that validation and reassurance from Victoria!!!!!

victoria's a recent college grad, majored in philosophy because she loved it and not because it would get her a job. she's been married for two years, followed her photographer husband to japan because why the fuck not, it'll be fun. except her husband's always out god knows where, has a whole life that doesn't include her. so she's left on her own more often than not, drowning in her own misery within the four walls of their shared apartment.
