the reason max didn't "change" drastically or suddenly in the new ep is because he already HAS, and the climax of that was when he told everyone they were his friends. his character development would seem sudden if you compared him to season 1. harrison became "old max" who was just angry and cynical, but season 4 max has changed so much that he was the only one not affected by the butterfly effect.
