“I want a different vessel.”
The clan leader froze, she hadn’t realized that she wasn’t alone. “….Again?” she asked softly, careful to keep her voice even. One did not anger the strange thing wearing a Coatl’s face that resided in their lair. It did not appear to be malicious, but it was very powerful, and strange things happened around it. Dragons would disappear or join the clan without notice. Eggs from other flights would show up and the thing would hoard them in it’s nest, crooning strange songs at them and telling them “It’s not time yet.”
The first vessel had been discarded after a few months, the current one had been specifically bred for and it had been inhabited for years. She had hoped it was appeased.
“I want a vessel with no family.” it explained in a soft hiss.
“One of the eggs you brought home?” The leader asked, hoping that if the thing entered a dragon at birth then the dragon would not suffer or know it had been consumed.
“No.” it replied, making her stomach drop. “Too risky. Probably ugly. And it’s not time for them yet.”
She nodded her acceptance, wondering exactly when it planned to hatch these eggs and what they were going to do with all of them when they hatched.
A few days later there was a Tundra in their lair. No one saw him come in. He was a sleepy sort of fellow, and didn’t seem at all bothered by the strange creature that shadowed him wherever he went. Maybe he didn’t realize what it was. No one had the heart to tell him.
The creature gave him all of the ornaments it had been wearing, eager to see him put them on as soon as possible. The Tundra smiled and thanked it. He didn’t ask why the clan was calling him by the same name they called the creature.
A new set of genes appeared on the request list. The leader had not written them there. She stared down at the list. Shimmer, Ghost, and a Coatl scroll. She knew what they were for. From behind her came a question.
“When will my vessel be complete?”
