Lord Have Mercy

I have liked and retweeted and shared posts for days now. I have watched the news, and talked about the state of our world more in the last 72 hours with my teenage children than I could have ever imagined I would. We took part in the rally Friday evening to show support for our neighbors in this city, to voice our desire to see systemic change, and in hopes that our black and brown brothers and sisters - friends, their children, the friends of MY children who I love like my own, and our family members - may not have to fear for their lives because of the color of their skin. You may not agree this is a ‘real thing’, but in conversation with people I know, love, and respect, I have come to see this is indeed true. Not because they are guilty of anything other than living life and having a skin color different than my own. I don’t write this to be inflammatory or to start an argument with anyone; I write because I have come to see and believe that letting your actions speak for what you believe may no longer be enough. This morning, I write because it needs to be said that #BlackLivesMatter, because what I see on the news, in the actions of some, tell me a different story. And because I have come to see that my life is valued differently because of the color of my skin. That, friends, is not right. I write today because I feel a weight in my soul that is not lifting. My prayer has become “Lord, have mercy…” because that is all I am really able to verbalize. May that mercy extend to all of us, and may it pour out of us into the lives of everyone around us, regardless of the color of our skin.
