âAll Things are Photographicalâ / Garry Winogrand
We watched the documentary film in class about famous photographer, Garry Winogrand. His works were always so unique yet so simple and to the point. Most of his works were street based photography. Getting to watch the film and knowing the history of Winogrand shows us why he is known for what he does. Winogrand sacrificed a lot of his personal life for the photos he publishes.
One of my favorite photos from Winogrand was his shot of the interracial couple holding chimpanzees dressed in clothes in front of Central Park Zoo. This image held a strong story. During that time, interracial relationships were a taboo and looked down on. This image goes to show that nothing really holds Winogrand back from taking photos. Heâs very open minded to just about anyone.
His way of photography isnât like most. Winogrand shoot most of his photos simply because he wanted to see what they would look like photographed. Like he says, âPhotography is not about the thing photographed. It is about how that thing looks photographed.â

Photobook Spotlight: Dream of Life by Gregory Crewdson
I was looking through the photobooks that was given to us in class and one caught my eye. The cover of Gregory Crewdsonâs Dream of Life photobook was different. The center of the image is a woman covered in dirt while being surrounded by various flowers. The thing that set it apart from the other books was that she wasnât in a field outside, but rather the woman was located inside a house. This caught my eye because you donât see it often. Crewdson puts a lot into producing these amazing outputs. He was able to showcase how some photos came to be with the help of many people. The production for his shoots costs a lot and you can see the effort he puts into taking photos.

Project Proposal
For my project, I wanted to work on shooting cosplayers. As a fan of anime, I have gone to various conventions in California from down south in Los Angeles to up north in Sacramento. I have many friends who involve themselves with cosplay so theyâll help contribute to my project. Along in my project, I want to showcase the other side of cosplaying. Many who are not involved in the hobby or the community of it, often find cosplayers as âweirdâ. I want to be able to show that cosplaying is something like an alter ego where people are able to change from their usual self into a character they love.
Photographer Spotlight: Julius Shulman
Architecture photos are one of my favorite styles of photography. I enjoy looking at various photos of buildings because itâs very calming. Because of that the photographer for this weekâs spotlight would be Julius Shulman. He is a well known architecture photographer for many years. He spent most of his lifetime taking photos of various buildings. Most of Shulmanâs work consists of composition and lighting. He works around those to bring out the emotions in architectural photographs.
âThe camera is the least important element in our work.â ( â )
