Embroideries by women in the labor camps. For Ukrainian inmates embroidery became one of the ways to pass the time and leave something behind, often embroideries were addressed to their children and had religious themes like asking the guardian angel to look after their family. Embroideries were also used as gifts between prisoned women. But they had to be resourceful and inventive due to the lack of materials: old fabrics, pieces of prison clothes, even the insides of cables were used as threads, needles were made from fish bones, matches and pins.

Translation of the embroidered writings:

1) "My heart yearns for freedom"

Some time ago, I received a question about how people in the russian-occupied territories of Ukraine live. My mother called today (she lives in Donetsk). It's a miracle she's still able to call me with a VPN. She shared news of my hometown. She had to close the window to say all this, despite not actually saying anything criminal. Because that's what life is like there. Everyone is scared.

Everything we knew in that town all our lives has pretty much ceased to exist - and, mind you, the town is not on the frontline. Nothing there has been destroyed, it's just been under occupation since 2014. Now our industrial bakery, meat processing plant, and coking plant - they all have stopped production under the glorious russian governance. Our steel mill - the main town employer (it's a monotown, everything is dependent on that mill) - has been put on "hot conservation," which basically means it's kept operational but produces nothing.

She says at all the border checkpoints (and there still is a border between the "DPR" and russia, despite them proclaiming it a part of russia in 2022), they check everyone's phones. Every phone has spyware on it, and every conversation is being listened to. She says sometimes she'll be talking to my father on the phone and then hear other voices commenting on what she has said, or just chatting in the background. I can't tell you if it's true or not, but I believe her.

So there you have it: personal accounts of what life there looks like.

The Better Talamasca (and life) update

My brethren, I regret to inform you that life has no mercy for artists. Due to my schedule and overall just-became-important-at-work-during-incoming-layoffs situation, I am making executive decision to indefinitely freeze TBT as a project. I still hold Talamasca close to my heart, as well as all of the friends and mutuals I've made along the way. (love you, Twig! Vardmand!). Thank you everyone who was involved one way or another and provided extremel;y valuable cultural consultations (TTF! Foxtallksnonstop!) As months went on, TBT became detached from Talamsca itself, The Mother and The House taking shape of their own. One day it will be a story, albeit a completely different one.

I have found myself in a place where I've started losing interest for the main characters (Gasper specifically) and fully shifted my attention towards a side character with a mind and destiny of her own. I've encountered several pieces of literature that have proved what I have in mind to be possible. It truly fills me with hope — that notion. I shall use the turbulent times of my life to hone my craft — I have some reading to catch up on. I would still love to be a part of the fandom if you'd have me. I hope to bring my tale into the world one way or another some years down the line. Thank you

Correction to the link sourced by OP! The Artemis II team did not take these photographs. These were shot by a Ukrainian student named Ildar Ibatullin sometime in the last year or so. Furthermore, the Moon does not have these actual colors in reality; Ildar does a lot of post processing and compositing to saturate the colors in order to artistically represent the mineral composition of the lunar surface.

so ive worked in childcare for a bit now. during the pandemic, the place i worked started a day program for kids whose parents needed to return to work. turns out the school district uses memorization and cueing, and when combined with online learning that read all the instructions to them, overwhelmingly the kids aged 5-9 just... couldnt read.

i brought in a bunch of my books from childhood, and we started having one-on-one reading lessons with the littles. then i went out and bought about fifty more books secondhand. first step was covering the pictures so the kids couldnt guess what the words said and had to actually TRY reading them first. second step was making a list of new words for each kid so we could learn about those words, what they meant, and if the kids were old enough, some of the etymology behind them (because if you can recognize latin root words, it's easier to make connections for pronunciation later on eg. unicorn -> universe).

the kids HATED this. reading was previously the easiest class and now it was really, really hard. but reading class had also previously been the most boring class; their books were ten pictures with a single sentence on the opposite page. we got through it by taking turns reading books the kids picked out from my collection- they would read one sentence or paragraph, then i would read the whole page complete with funny voices, then it would be their turn again, etc. it turns out that if kids are motivated to hear the rest of a good story or a lot of information about a topic they love, they're more willing to struggle.

the kids improved so rapidly that i honestly almost cried a few times from how proud i was. one little girl (kindergarten aged) went from being unable to sound out the whole alphabet to reading goodnight moon by herself in two months :'>

all this, though, was NOT my job. my job was to keep the kids on task during their online schooling and prevent them from killing each other or starving. i am not a teacher. the school system was failing these kids to the degree that outside individual reading lessons were necessary, and school systems across the US are still doing this!

if you are a parent or teacher or childcare worker, PLEASE check to see what your kid is being taught. ask to see examples of lesson materials. raise concerns about the importance of phonics over any other reading strategy. join the pta, go to school board meetings, send emails- just make sure your kid is actually learning to read.

Another maternity hospital was bombed by Russia, this time in Odesa.

A few days ago maternity ward in Ivano-Frankivsk was damaged as well. Man and his daughter were killed after visiting his wife who just gave birth to their second baby. Ivano-Frankivsk is in the safer part of Ukraine, in other parts it's even worse.
