went to a presentation today that involved running through the different polities and names of everything encompassed in the islands off northwest eurasia currently associated with the nations of Ireland and the United Kingdom. went up to the presenter afterward to ask, hey, since wide agreement is that ‘British Isles’ is an impolitic term with Ireland also in there, has anyone come up with less of a mouthful to refer to these rocks than ‘The Northeastern Atlantic Archipelago’? turns out no. the suffering of trying to talk about French Celtic Revivals as influenced by The Other Celtic Revivals (OfGreatBritainAndIrelandAndMan) continues.

dear future me. hopefully someday you will present at a conference again. and you may be telling yourself that it’s fine if you don’t finish the talk before you travel, you can find a printer when you get there. this attitude is why you are going to bed late with a sore wrist the night before your 9 AM presentation after having copied the whole damn talk out by hand. don’t you fuckin try it.

minor tragedy. the Breton article from a chlidren's magazine i spent a minor age translating does not look like it is going to fit in the presentation i was translating it for.

the UYV made a whole big fuss before the 1924 pan-celtic congress* declaring that they were going to show up to prove that they maintained the independence of their ideology, 'virgin' of all compromises, etc etc etc and i can't decide whether to be exhausted or amused by the way the ideological purity argument truly has not changed in a hundred years.

This looks like a normal brick house, but the 1988 home in Maple Grove, MN has so much going on inside the 3bd, 3ba, 5,249sqft home. $1m. It's an equestrian estate in a gated community.

This would be the formal living room. There's a LOT of wood.

There's a mezzanine above, and a fireplace, but it's not a very large room.

Instead of a dining room table they've just got a table for two.

It looks like they added Victorian ceiling tiles to the coffered ceiling and appliques to things like the fridge.

This looks like a room that opens to the deck, but it's empty.

I think that this is the primary suite.

It has a bath with stairs, yet the toilet is in kind of a tight space.

On the landing there's a weird little dormer area.

This room has some built-ins around the dormer nook.

This room is cute.

A TV room.

Someone did a faux stucco finish on this basement wall.

They call this a pub room.

They installed a wall mirror in the home gym.

Craft room with a terrace.

There's a horse barn and corral.

It's large up in the barn. This has potential. There's even a kitchenette.

They've a pool room.

I didn't know what those metal things were, so I searched on Google Lens, and they're saddle holders.

Outdoor area.

i probably can't use it for the thesis and i definitely can't share it publicly but one of my favorite things out of the archives last week was the singular sketch this priest's assistant included in his letters, which depicted a statue blowing up while making a face I can only describe as 8D

i probably can't use it for the thesis and i definitely can't share it publicly but one of my favorite things out of the archives last week was the singular sketch this priest's assistant included in his letters, which depicted a statue blowing up while making a face I can only describe as 8D

the thing about making phone scans of microfiche photographs of magazine pages that were bound in a book at one point is that it makes you tremendously aware and in awe of the chain of descent of human knowledge. and also even as i judge whatever shmuck failed to organize this properly at some point in the chain i know that in the far future there is the possibility of someone looking at my scans and thinking that about me, so i can’t judge too harshly.

’why is there random lens flare’ okay look the security walked by on the balcony and activated the motion-sensitive lights and staring at magazine pages for three hours straight fries your brain, you’re lucky i noticed enough to rescan when they turned out illegible. i know i should be more diligent but i’m on a time crunch and my shoulder hurts

‘why are the years all in one file until they randomly switch to volume in 1927’ for that one you must blame the microficher. not my choice.
