Community Associations Contribute to Housing Strategy

The Saanich Community Association Network, including CBRA’s Eric Dahli – has been working closely with the District of Saanich and the province to come up with solutions for the housing crisis in 2022.

The Sannich Housing Strategy Task Force (HSTF) was formed to act as an advisory body to support the development of a Housing Strategy, a 10-year strategy that that will direct how we move forward to improve housing outcomes and support residents of all ages, incomes, and abilities.

The main purpose of the Task Force was to provide Council with recommendations for strategies and actions designed to achieve greater housing supply, affordability and diversity, and accommodate a broad range of community housing needs now and in the future.

Recommendations from the Task Force are compiled in a Final Report [PDF – 2 MB] and are anticipated to form the core content of the Housing Strategy.

Survey Last Day! Cadboro Bay Local Area Plan Update

Do you care about the future blueprint for the Cadboro Bay neighborhood? Monday January 10, 2022 is the last day to complete the survey about the draft Local Area Plan for Cadboro Bay.

Once complete, the Local Area Plan and Village Design Guidelines will guide future growth and change in Cadboro Bay over the next 20-30 years.

In November, 2021 Saanich held a number of public open houses in Cadboro Bay village–if you missed those, or if you have more ideas to share, take the survey!!!

Sewer FAQ’s

The Saanich Engineering Department has heard from some homeowners in Cadboro Bay who are currently on private septic systems, and who are interested in connecting to the municipal sanitary sewer.

To share information community-wide, Saanich has prepared Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ’s) on this topic, available here.

Saanich has also distributed the FAQs to residents in the vicinity of Lockehaven Drive, where there has been recent interest.

Pop-up Dog Park Pilot – Report Released

The Summer Pop-Up Dog Park was a pilot project that took place at five different Saanich parks during the summer of 2021 – Including at Cadboro-Gyro Park.

A report on outcomes has been released by Saanich – read report.

Saanich will be including these findings as part of its People, Pets and Parks Strategy set to begin in 2022.

Climate Action Workshop Series

Saanich residents are invited to join this free online workshop series about climate change big ideas and practical actions in your community. Learn from Saanich staff and expert guests about ways to make your transportation, home, yard, and purchases more resilient and climate-friendly and different tools and rebates available to support you. Come out of the series knowing more about the inspiring climate action happening in your community and with your own personal prioritized climate action plan.

Tuesday evenings from 7-8pm. January 25 – March 1, 2022 Online using MS Teams. Link will be emailed prior to workshop.

The Draft Plan is now ready for public input and feedback!

Since 2018, Saanich has been working in collaboration with the community in developing the Draft Plan through earlier public engagement including surveys, design charrettes and workshops. The Draft Plan and accompanying Draft Village Design Guidelines will serve to guide future growth and change in Cadboro Bay over the next 20-30 years.

Leashes Approved for Cadboro-Gyro Park/Beach

Without enthusiasm, and after much deliberation, Saanich Mayor and Council approved bylaws that simplify Cadboro-Gyro Park/Beach to a single set of rules: Leashed dogs permitted, year-round.

Councillor Harper said she was informed by the Canadian Wildlife Service that the Federal study of dogs in Victoria-area Migratory Bird Sanctuaries will be released to the public in the near future. By banning off-leash dogs, the new bylaws align to the Federal regulations.

The District-wide People, Parks and Pets study is planned to begin in 2022, and this will include a comprehensive public consultation that could result in further changes to the bylaws.

StrongerBC Young Leaders Council – Apply Now

The next generation of B.C.’s leaders will have a new platform to help shape government policy and priorities through the creation of the StrongerBC Young Leaders Council.

The council, which will be made up of youth 14 to 26, will provide direct and ongoing feedback to Brittny Anderson, the Premier’s special adviser on youth, on the issues that matter most to young people.

“From climate change to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, young people are facing considerable challenges. That’s why it is critical to have young leaders at the table to find solutions,” said Premier John Horgan. “The StrongerBC Young Leaders Council will have our government’s ear as part of an ongoing dialogue. We want to know what matters most to B.C.’s youth and to make sure they have a say in building a stronger province and a brighter future for everyone.”

The StrongerBC Young Leaders Council will seek to include youth throughout the province who are Indigenous, Black or people of colour, who live in rural or remote areas, young people living with disabilities, 2SLGBTQ+ and other young leaders from equity-seeking communities. Presenting the viewpoints of under-represented groups to government is a priority of this council.

Council members will be appointed for a one-year term and have the option to continue with the council for up to three years. Meetings will be held every three months with a mix of in-person and online.
