✩ anjali & rowena.
“hey, as long as my piercing doesn’t close, i’m fine,” she said, waving a hand in a vague gesture. “i’m terrified of getting it pierced again. i’m so scared of needles i nearly passed out the first time—which is ironic, considering i’m a doctor.” using syringes on other people? anjali was totally fine. however, when it came to anything regarding her own body, she would get dizzy the moment a syringe came anywhere close to her skin.
― rowena paused in their work before looking up towards the other, a small nod. “that doesn’t really make much sense.” rowena offered even though they were sure that anjali knew that. it was strange but ro knew people that would sit through a six hour tattoo but hated getting shots, but to each their own. “what kind of doctor are you??” they asked before closing the case.

✩ ·anjali & rowena.
anjali breathed a small sigh of relief when rowena said they could replace the jewelry that had been causing anjali such a headache over the past week. “really? that’s excellent. awesome. perfect. i don’t really care what it looks like at this point, i just want it to fit the piercing until i can figure it out.” she held her hand back out for her own stud and the one that rowena was holding in their hand—and, honestly, it wasn’t all that different from the jewelry that anjali had been wearing before, except for the fact that anjali’s stud had a real diamond in it instead of a rhinestone. it wasn’t like anyone could tell from a distance, and perhaps she’d be able to get her fiance to fix this up for her. he had made their engagement ring from scratch after all.
―rowena offered a quick nodded as the other spoke out. “it might not be as fancy but i’m glad we could find a solution.” they offered before moving to put a few of the other jewlery choices away so that they wouldn’t end up losing something. one day, rowena wanted to get somethings in the shop like what this lady had brought it. it would be amazing to finally have some beautiful pieces to offer others.
✩ arjun & rowena·.
“sure, if you’re willing to do all the shit back here behind the bar, we’ll open up for you anytime,” arjun replied, leaning back against the shelves behind the bar and folding their arms over their chest. he looked rowena up and down once, recognizing them from the tattoo shop that arjun had been desperate to frequent—though he hadn’t quite settled on a design, nor did he quite have the nerve to go through with it. “what’ll it be? and don’t say vodka soda, i’m tired of making them. it’s literally the most boring drink.”
― rowena couldn’t hold back the smirk that crossed over their lips. it was strange that they would even consider it in the first place but still. offering a quick shake of their head, rowena moved to place their hands on either side of their hips. “vodka soda??” they teased softly before offering a soft chuckle. “what kinda person you take me for.” they couldn’t hold back the smile that bloomed on their face.
★ anjali & rowena·.
“see, this is the problem with living in a small town. at least in big cities, there’s usually a little india where i can find everything i need and i don’t have to explain what hing is to the guy at the grocery store.” in fact, in her father’s store, they had bottles of the powdered resin lining the shelves, and they were often unable to keep it in stock, as all the indian aunties came in to stock up on the ingredients needed to make dazzling spiced gravies that couldn’t be found at the regular supermarket. she missed it, missed the neighborhood full of people who looked like her. anjali often felt alone, adrift in this town of strangers. “yeah, sure,” she said, holding it out between her index finger and thumb before dropping it into rowena’s palm.
― rowena wasn't sure what to say to the girl standing before them, but they opted to listen to the words that were coming from their mouth. it wasn't like they had much to add about the city or anything, coming from a small suburb to an even smaller town. it was strange but going to the city was a whole trip to rowena. they paused before taking the jewelry from her before nodding along. it was lighter than most of the jewelry that rowena handled often but it was still pretty non-the-less. moving to slip the stud inside a few of the slots on their gauge wheel, rowena nodded a moment before holding it back out. "while i can't offer you something as beautiful as that," they spoke out, moving to grab another set of studs from the case. "i can offer you a sixteen gauge gold stud with a rhinestone on it." they held out the piece of jewelry for the other to see and judge to their heart's content. it wasn't like rowena could just make something appear right now to ease them but they could offer a solution until they could figure something out.

Arjun was great at that fake fucking smile he always put on his face at the bar. It was the same stupid customer service smile he had used at the restaurant for years, the same stupid smile he put on his face every time his parents asked him how he was doing. They could never understand how Arjun felt—like he was just an utter fucking failure. None of these people in this bar could understand just how deeply miserable working here made him, especially since he was fairly certain part of the bar was on the very ground his parent’s restaurant used to inhabit.
They didn’t let any of that on, however, just grabbing the rag from their shoulder to wipe down the wooden bar and giving a couple of the patrons a flirtatious wink as they left a tip on the bar, which he promptly picked up and tucked into the breast pocket of his light blue button down. At last, the bar seemed to be clearing out, and they had their back to the front when they heard the footsteps of someone else entering. They stifled a groan and turned. “We’re about to close for the night, my dudes.”
― rowena couldn’t help the scowl that moved over their face as they watched people walk out of the bar. here they were, trying to enter the bar and yet everyone seemed to think that they were just holding the door for everyone to leave. it drove ro crazy that they all thought they were just being nice when in reality, ro just wanted to close the door on their faces. after the final person left, rowena could finally sneak inside the bar, door clanging shut behind them. “and here i thought you were opening just for little ol’ me.” ro teased as they offered a real small smile towards them.

.・゜-: ✧ :- dolly feat. shrike·
located in shrike grocers. this is an open starter for @shrikestart·
whenever it came time for dolly to go grocery shopping she was always reminded of the attack that took place in the store. it wasn’t the only place tainted by horrific events, especially not in shrike mall, but it was one place she couldn’t avoid no matter how many days she spent ordering take out opposed to real food she would cook for herself - food that required ingredients she had to brave shrike grocers for. she was always tense browsing the aisles, on edge turning each corner, constantly worried that somehow the attack was planned to be repeated for exactly when she needed to shop. her thoughts were only on the attack and the killers as she reached for a jar of tomato paste, and her paranoia was so present that she had to turn her head to check behind her even when performing a quick and simple task. as she turned, something shiny caught her eye underneath the metal shelves her back faced.
surely it would have gone unnoticed to most people, or maybe noticed but assumed to be a candy bar wrapper or something similar, but with dolly’s mind so wholly on the crimes her mind went only further in that direction. what if it was a clue? dolly abandoned her shopping basket and she got down on her knees, desperately reaching for what she still couldn’t make out despite the shortened distance. she sat back upright, looking to the shelves for something long that could extend her reach, but then she noticed another customer’s eyes in her direction. “this isn’t as weird as this might look.” she promised and she laughed out of embarrassment. “i can’t reach what i’m trying to.”
― isabela couldn’t wait for her shift to end today since she had to help open the store up. it was just long day of restocking and refacing the whole store all day long. everybody thinking she could stop what she was doing just to help them find something that was exactly where they thought it was. some day’s izzy couldn’t help but want to burn the whole place down or at least just not show up for her scheduled shift. it was time for her to walk back down the isle and reface everything when she came to a slow stop. eyes narrowing and brows moving together as she watched the person crawl on the floor before sighing. “what are you doing??” izzy called out before sighing deeply. “what are you trying to get??” it wasn’t like her shift was over any time soon, so helping someone was normally what she was supposed to do.

―“college wasn’t a choice for me either, but i made it a choice.” lydia confessed to their friend. it wasn’t a secret that lydia never went to college and didn’t want to go to college. their parents were bringing her little brochures for different schools every other day but they couldn’t handle it. hardly managing their parents expectations when they were in high school was bad enough, let alone their expectations if they would go to college.·“you don’t think i worry about things??” lyida offered up before tilting their head to the side.·“i just don’t let it show.” offering up once more with a shrug before leaning back in the chair.·“most people look at me and think, hmm not a single thought in that head.” leaning forward, lydia poked the center of their forehead.·“but its full of worry.”

Just another long day at the salon and all Jessica could think about was the idea that her father had given her a deadline to finish law school, in the climate they were in right now. Yeona had only been a very recent friend of Jessica’s, someone she could practice speaking Korean with and discuss the topics she’d actually liked. One mishap after the other and she was being told that this was why she needed to become a lawyer. Imagine all of the families who could use your help at a time like this.. her father’s words ringing through her skull like the abrasive lyrics at a Rod Hot Chili Peppers concert. “Hey, Yeona, can you pass me the...” struggling to find the Korean word for it, she gestured toward the neon pink colored nail polish sitting just on top of her bag. For the past hour, she’d been sketching up a look inspired by none other than Cyndi Lauper and she didn’t feel like standing up to get the nail polish herself. There was an obvious shift in her mood after her father had called the shop to speak to her and she simply wanted to take her mind off of it the best way she knew how, by diving into her personal art.
― yeona had known something was wrong with her friend. while they haven’t been friends for a long time, yeona could just tell. jessica had this aura about her that yeona was worried about. when she finally finished styling her client, she offered a soft goodbye before turning to glance at her friend. while she must have spaced out for a split second, hearing the familiar language come out, yeona brought her full attention back to her friend to listen. “yea.” yeona moved to grab the polish off of her bag before moving to set it down on the table before jessica. “what’s going on??”
