Talking about how Love Between Fairy and Devil takes often obnoxious tropes and uses them in ways that are good and effective.

The 'I never loved you' trope seems so common in dramas, but LBFAD actually does it right. First off, there really does appear to be little choice but to push her away at this point. He doesn't have many solutions outside of 'she stays with me and dies, or she stops loving me.' It is a truly dire situation.

Secondly, it doesn't last. Whereas some shows might keep this arc going several insufferable episodes, in LBFAD it essentially lasts... one.

Third and in my opinion most importantly, she doesn't believe him. We don't get a lot of moping because Xiao Lanhua realizes this is another stupid sacrificial DFQC moment. Of course, she is still devastated, but she almost immediately decides to take the decision upon herself to save DFQC's men (by sacrificing her life, but it's okay, she comes back).
