For this art project, I wanted to make a series of something I relate to, and sometimes wish I could hide after being judged: my tattoos. Being a tattooed woman can be very difficult sometimes. People nowadays still see tattoos as something bad and trashy on a woman. People judge a lot when it comes to women with tattoos, especially when the tattoos have little or no meaning at all. Whenever people ask me “What do your tattoos mean?” I am blunt and reply by saying “Nothing really, I just got them for fun/I like the design.” This is usually followed up by a disappointed look.
When tattooed women are judged so much, it makes us feel like we need to hide them in public, or just get rid of them overall. But in contrast, we should be proud of wearing our ink! This artwork depicts how removing a tattoo basically removes a part of that person. Although I must say, the effect of the removal of the tattooed areas of the models looks cool, it shows just how much is taken away from them. Stories, fun memories, or just a spur of the moment decision, tattoos are a way of self-expression, and judging people who get inked “just because” is horrible. Instead of making the person feel like their tattoo was a horrible addition to their body, accept the fact that it is their body, therefore their choice, to add images to their skin. Tattoos are a beautiful and historical art form that dates back to around 12,000 BC and should be appreciated!
