Happy #Wednesday100! Have a comedic family dinner scene, where the humor slightly depends on the book canon detail that Claire’s Gaelic comprehension is pretty good. Set post-finale and everyone’s fine.
Meals and Memories
Lately, her parents are playful, even at dinner. Mama’s eating one-handed, resting the other in Da’s. He fusses in Gaelic, which Claire pretends not to understand.
Only Jem is certain to remember Claire with brown curls. But all the kids have a chance at seeing their grandparents like this: Mama sliding into Da’s lap, all innocence as she sneaks a bite of his dessert.
“Now who’s not sensible? You’ve just let your guard down.”
“Seems your ear for the Gaidhlig’s recovered nicely, Sassenach.”
“You’re both ridiculous,” Brianna says, joining the teasing. Their answering laughter is its own kind of magic.
Wednesday 100: Miniatures
What entertainment could a child possibly find amongst Claire's instruments and remedies, Jamie wonders as he walks toward the surgery to fetch his granddaughter for dinner. Mandy is full of fire and curiosity, too — a small Claire, heart beating bold and easy now; despite their rules, he might easily find his wife's things shattered or misplaced.
But Mandy isn't running wild when he arrives, instead bent over the cot where she's tucked one of her dolls.
"Jesus H. Roosevelt Christ," she scolds. "You didn't take your tonic, and now look what's happened!"
Standing in the doorway, he grins. Small Claire, indeed.
The power of a glance has been so much abused in love stories, that it has come to be disbelieved in. Few people dare now to say that two beings have fallen in love because they have looked at each other. Yet it is in this way that love begins, and in this way only.

samheughan
Did you know that Sam Heughan’s original inspiration for Claire while preparing for his role in Outlander came from a portrait in our own collection? When Sam first read Cross Stitch, he used a postcard of Lady Agnew, as a bookmark after visiting the National gallery in Edinburgh. Struck by the portrait’s resemblance to Claire, it became his visual inspiration for the character. You can see Gertrude Vernon, Lady Agnew of Lochnaw (1892) for yourself, free to visit at the National, and even pick up your own copy of the book Sam is holding. Sam recently joined Chair of the Board Catherine Muirden for a conversation about the importance of art, wellbeing, and his childhood visits to the galleries. Filmed by @sandybcameraEditado · 3 h
