George R.R. Martin on writing women
George Stroumboulopoulos: There's one thing that's interesting about your books. I noticed that you write women really well and really different. Where does that come from?
George R.R. Martin: You know, I've always considered women to be people.
Helliday Season
Yea, that's a terrible pun.
This time of year isn't really hell. Actually, I usually quite enjoy it. However, I'm just unbelievably, constantly exhausted, and unable to perform at work as I should. I get my work done, but my progress is slow and I'm not as much of a perfectionist as I used to be.
When depression hits like this, everything becomes much more difficult and more tiring. Getting out of or going to bed can be so exhausting that I'll avoid the task altogether. It's counter-intuitive, being drained by the act of going to bed, but there is nothing that doesn't extract more energy than usual. Brushing my teeth, showering, getting dressed, going to/staying at work, eating dinner, going for lunch, etc. Anything and everything is a massively bloody battle that lasts far longer than any war with yourself ever should.
Today is just another day that challenges me to stay awake. And I'm quickly losing that challenge. I'm pretending to work as I type this. I'm just so tired that I can't focus on or remember my work. I know that that's terrible, but right now, I'm just trying not to quit. Every day, I come into this office and try to get through the day. The morning is always the hardest. By 12pm, I'm looking to my lunch break at 1 and trying to figure out ways to make it last a little longer.
Caffeine doesn't do what it used to. It doesn't wake me up, it just keeps the headaches at bay.
It isn't helping that I'm trying to be sober. I don't drink often, but when I do, I drink a lot. It's been two weeks since I've had a drink or anything else (with the exception of a sip of a friend's drink because she wanted to know if it tasted weak -- I forgot that it was alcoholic and I wasn't). Being sober isn't so much the hard part (though I admit that I am tempted when surrounded by alcohol at parties). The hard part is dealing with everyone around me telling me that I can't do it. When I told my friends about my decision, they laughed. Only my sister showed any faith in my ability to stay sober. It's like a new year's resolution: No one thinks you can keep it, so eventually, neither do you.
This holiday season is a combination of issues that are wearing me down. I just need a break, and the one at the end of the week can't come fast enough. I foresee myself missing more work this week if I can't wake up.
Wish me luck, and happy holidays to you.
The Latest Revelation
I realized today that I kind of hate keeping up the same blog on two sites. From now on, I'll be using my Tumblr for reblogging, quick posts, and maybe some photos. My Blogger site will be the more wordy one. There will most likely be some cross-pollination whenever I decide that a post is too fabulous not to show up in as many places as possible.
To keep in the spirit of short posts, I got a new tattoo! I'm very excited about it.
Here's what I wrote about it on deviantART:
"Had this finished in November. It's the logo for Clandestine Industries, Pete Wentz's clothing line, and began as the unofficial logo for Fall Out Boy.
Patrick Stump's voice was what inspired me to take voice lessons and go into singing. That was 10 years ago, and I'm still singing and taking lessons. I also got my BA in Music for vocals.
People make fun of me for having a Fall Out Boy tattoo, but I love it! Singing is my life and Fall Out Boy led me there."
This batheart is completely handmade using polymer clay. After baking, the texture inside was carefully carved. It was painted using glitters gel and opaque stain, then it was glazed. It’s 4,5cm. Here you can see more of my work: http://eyranne.deviantart.com/

To Be a Bear
I'm sorry I've been lax in updating this blog! Here are links to all of the posts that I haven't transferred over here. I don't want to spam you with new posts, so I'll only make this one. My newest posts, in chronological order: Naked Eyelid, Hoo Boy, Performance Review, Thanksgiving Jealousy, and Taco Bell Showdown. Now on to the show:
It would seem that bear mace is now a thing in our community. On the 29th of October, someone (or a group of someones) was crashing random parties and bear macing everyone. Last night, while I was in the States and my parents were enjoying what they thought was a quiet evening, there was a very loud and frantic banging at the door. My mom answered and found a young man writhing in agony after being bear-maced. Being a nurse and able to help him, she let him in. While he was rolling on the floor and shrieking, she managed to ask his name. "It's me!" he shouted. "Blonde John!" (Not his real name). Here, my parents realized that this was not some random kid, but an old friend of my brother's. In an effort to decrease Blonde John's discomfort, my mom sent him into the basement to use the downstairs shower, at which point she called the police. Before getting into the shower, Blonde John begged my dad to go to the churchyard and move his truck. The churchyard is only three houses down, so my dad agreed and set out. On the ground next to the truck, he found what appeared to be an iPod and a small baggie, which he threw onto the passenger seat. When he opened the driver's side door, the bear mace was still so strong that he couldn't get within 3 feet of the interior. Obviously, he didn't move it; he just locked the doors and came back home. Blonde John spent an hour and a half in the shower, trying to assuage the fiery torture. While he was still in there, his phone began ringing incessantly. When my mom checked who was calling, she discovered another familiar name: Bacon (another fake name -- not hippy parents), my brother's old best friend. I miss that kid. He was practically another younger brother, but some very bad things happened to his family and he moved across town and made new friends. My mom called him and told him not to call Blonde John for a while. When the police questioned my parents, they asked my father if he had touched anything. He mentioned the bag and the iPod and they politely informed him that it was not an mp3 player. It was a scale, and the baggie was filled with marijuana. As was the truck. They found at least 10 more baggies. Thankfully, Blonde John is only going to receive a fine, though I suppose I shouldn't say that that's good. So, TL;DR, apparently when drug deals go wrong in the churchyard, the answer is bear mace. In the churchyard. I laughed.
A Horrible Trend
Is anyone else just unbelievably sick of the "finger in the mouth" pose that all amateur models seem to favour recently? I'll be browsing through someone's portfolio and while their photos are very well composed, the models will be smiling coyly (in their opinion) with one finger between their teeth (or against their lip or over their lips, or just in the general vicinity of their oral orifice). Every. Single. One. I've gone through entire galleries on deviantART where every model has at least one photo with her finger on her molars. Models, I have a request: QUIT IT! It's not cute, it's not funny, it's not original, it's not interesting, it's not creative. Interact with your surroundings. Pretend you've just seen something tragic happen. Recall the best moment of your life. DO ANYTHING BUT STICK A FINGER IN YOUR MOUTH AND SMILE FLIRTATIOUSLY AT THE CAMERA. Everyone has seen this pose before. You want to stand out? Do something that you can't find in the profile photos of 13-year-old girls. Harsh? Quite possibly. True? Hell motherfucking yes, in my opinion. What do you think?
Uncorking the Grapes of MATH?!
Clearly, Global News has abandoned all pretense of not being as bad as Fox News. One of their stories tonight is going to be about China's growing taste for fine wine. That sounds almost interesting. So why am I blogging about something barely at the fringes of a good story? Did you read my title? I didn't make that up. That was Global News' actual title for the story. "Uncorking the Grapes of Math". "The Grapes of MATH". There are so many reasons why that is a horrible title. The most obvious: The stereotype that Asian people are wizards at math. If it were just an awful pun, it wouldn't be so bad. But it's an awful pun based on a novel about the GREAT DEPRESSION. It's also based on a novel that's all about people trying to escape their horrible circumstances in their home state (Oklahoma) and make their way to what they hope will be a much better place (California). Global, are you insinuating that any Chinese immigrants who enter Canada only have exploitation and poverty to look forward to? The best part of this whole experience was seeing it again, 45 minutes later, with the offending title removed. It's like they saw this coming.
Minnie Riperton Surprise
For anyone who's seen Disturbia, you may not recognize the singer's name (Minnie Riperton), or the title of the song (Lovin' You), but hopefully the lyrics will jog your memory: "No one else can make me feel the colours that you bring." Kale plays it to drown out the music at Ashley's party. Why am I talking about a song from 1975 from the soundtrack of a movie from 2007? Because as I was walking to the bank on my lunch break, the speakers down Queen St. were pumping out the jams. The "jams" in question being "Lovin' You". It made my day. Of course, at that point, I had no idea that my day was about to improve beyond belief. That was a little flowery, but it's definitely a necessary embellishment. I was only one block from the office when a bus pulled up next to the sidewalk and one familiar person emerged. I shouted her name a few times, but the sound of the bus' insanely loud engine drowned me out. There was no way I was running in that heat, so I was lucky when she heard me on my third attempt. It was Bee-Bee, the most insightful, fun, fantastic, and intelligent person I met at Algoma University. I'm not putting down any of the amazing people I met there, I'm just saying that Bee-Bee is incredible. What was even more incredible was her news: She's written a book! Bee-Bee has always been a talented writer, and I'm so excited to finally be able to purchase something she's written. Right now, the book's only available at the university's book store, but knowing Bee-Bee, soon it'll be a bestseller. Seeing her and hearing her news just brightened my day; a challenging feat on a day when the air feels wet to breath and the sun is clinging to your sweat. I'll definitely keep you all updated on Bee-Bee's book, and let you know when it's in a store near you!
Holy Employment, Batman!
Not the most original title, and I know I can only ever use that joke once, but my ability to form even a semi-creative title or throw in a pun is severely limited today. I've been fairly absent from here for the last few days. You can thank my new job for that. At first I was overwhelmed with stress and the fear that not only would I fail at this job, but that I would fail spectacularly. So far, my fears have gone unrealized. However, what I've realized is that every day becomes a little less stressful than the one before. Why? Because I actually know what I'm doing now. I was trained and I now have a fairly good grasp on all of my duties. I won't lie and say I'm totally calm and cool now (though when am I ever cool?), but I'm at least not running to the bathroom to cry three times a day. It seems like I may actually be in a job I feel comfortable with, though if this blog post jinxes it, I will invent time travel just to punch myself in the face for this.
Last Nite
(I love The Strokes.) I've been unemployed for over a year, but I've been putting out resumes and looking for a good job. Last night, my former boss from the Arts Council called me, asked why I hadn't applied for the job opening there. She told me to bring in my resume today for an interview. The interview went well. I was terrified, of course, and I still am. Why? Because she offered me the job immediately after the interview was done. I'm ecstatic that I am now employed, but I'm also really stressed out. I know that since I've already worked with the Arts Council I shouldn't have too much trouble adjusting to this new position. I also know that when I was working there before, Rob, who held this position then, was a constant ball of stress. I think that once I get in there and start doing the job, everything will be a lot less overwhelming. I think what I'm saying is "wish me luck".
Limitless (Kind of a Misnomer)
Okay, when I don't absolutely love a movie, I feel compelled to point out all the reasons why, so this is going to be chock full of spoilers (I don't understand "chock full"). Also, wow! I really dropped the ball, guys. It's been two weeks since my last post. I promise to make it up to you with hilarious tales and photo fun! Now, as for Limitless, I did enjoy it, but mostly because it was very stylized. The plot, though entertaining, had holes the Titanic could slip through unnoticed (provided the icebergs that were Bradley Cooper's girlfriend's acting were out in broad daylight). The premise is simple: There's a magic drug that allows you to access and make use of the entirety of your brain's potential. The premise is also ridiculous, since the whole we-only-use-ten-percent-of-our-brains is a blatant lie. Every part of our brain is constantly working to keep us alive and functioning. If the whole ten percent thing were true, then people who lose ninety percent (or any percent less than 100) of their brains wouldn't be considered brain dead. They'd be walking around like the rest of us, wondering how the hell you lose ninety percent of a brain. Ignoring all of that, we have a drug that turns you into Robert Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes taken by a lazy, almost-failed writer. And by taken, I mean that in more ways than one. Bradley Cooper gets his hands on the drug in a socially roundabout way. His ex-almost-brother-in-law runs into him on the street and invites him for a drink. Cooper's reluctant, but he goes along with it. While they talk, it becomes more and more apparent that Cooper sucks at life. So his "brother" offers him a new, "FDA-approved" medicinal cure. Cooper's reluctant, but he goes along with it. Once he comes down off the drug, he realizes he likes that shit, and looks up his "brother" to get more. Long story short, "brother" gets murdered, Cooper gets drugs, and then a bunch of thugs get involved. That was what really irked me. I love Robert De Niro. I was excited to see him villainized. What I got instead was a possibly Russian thug never mentioned in the trailers and totally, randomly thrown into the plot, taking over as movie villain. Then, to make it all worse, they spent the whole movie building up De Niro as this super badass who can control anyone, no matter how much "NZT" ( the drug) they're on, only to have him roll over like a dog in the least climactic way possible. At the end, Cooper's running for Senator and is looking pretty successful. De Niro strolls in, threatening him with NZT extinction unless he decides to play ball. What happens? Cooper tells De Niro that he tweaked the drug so that he could stop taking it but still retain its effects. Then De Niro says, "Oh, okay..." and drives away. There's no message telling us drugs are bad. No moral saying that people who cheat don't come out ahead. All we get is a two-hour drug-gasm, where Cooper and everyone else in the movie worship their vengeful god, NZT. There isn't even a difference between Cooper and Dimitri von Thuginstein, except Cooper uses his powers purely for personal gain, and Dimitri uses them... purely for... personal gain. Oh. Um... huh. Well, I guess Cooper's the good guy 'cause he got it first?
Fellow Canadians
I have discovered a horrible secret. It involved the violent agenda of a once-beloved (or at least somewhat trusted) department store and its parent company. What am I talking about? SEARS. Technically, it's less that I've really discovered anything and more just realized what's been staring us all in the face for years. The NAME. SEARS. As in, "OH GOD, IT BURNS!" As in, scalding water on your crotch! I never really thought about the name of said store. It was always discussed in one and only one way; as a store, so I never looked any deeper. I guess you all know what this means. Zellers, we're gonna figure out what you're hiding and then be pretty damn horrified.
Nightmare?
For the longest time, whenever someone would ask me how many children I wanted to have, I would scoff and joke about how much of a wreck I'd be as a mother. It's always just been a given that I would never reproduce. I'm sure a part of it was just my natural reluctance to do what everyone expects me to do (I'm so original, right?), but a larger aspect of my fear of parenthood has to do with heredity and genetics. When I turned 11, I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes. I was informed of all the possible complications and horrors that go along with the condition. One thing I didn't really worry about at age 11 was the very real possibility that I could pass diabetes on to my children. It's not the most terrible disease out there, and I'm actually doing pretty well with it (seizure-free for almost a year!), but it's still not something I would want to risk passing on. Another genetic opposite-of-jackpot I scored was depression and anxiety (the "Fraternal Twins of Mental Illness" or something like that). Though I'm dealing with them well enough (I suppose), they're still a bitch. My brother and sister seem to have lucked out and avoided the worst of it (thank god) it's still scary to think that if I were to procreate, my children may spend their young years being as emo as I am. Then there's the terrifying thought that I'll be a nightmare as a mother (rather than having nightmares where I am one) and cause the mental disorders that haunt their childhoods. As you can see, I've always viewed reproduction as a risky affair (and that's not even considering the horror of birth and pregnancy). I've had nightmares about being a mother, being pregnant, having my child switched with another, and many other variations of Mommie Dearest. But last night, I had one that kind of confused me. I was the mother of an adorable little toddler named Colm (yes, from Bad Machinery). He was so sweet. When I woke up, I actually missed him. I still miss him. I think I want to be a mother. Obviously not right now, but in the future, maybe it wouldn't be so bad. Well, guys, how about it? How scary is the thought of two more little mes running around out there? By the way, I keep referring to them as "them" because I would never want only one kid. Growing up with siblings was fantastic, even when I didn't think it was. I guess opinions change. How creepy, eh? Children, I mean. Case in point, Japanese cinema.
Photography Results
Hey guys, did you know? My last post was my 100th on Blogger! Feels like home. I'll get there on Tumblr, too. Now photography. Oh! No, wait. Before I get to the results of the workshop, I have to mention something I forgot to bring up in my Insidious rant. During the credits, I usually spend my time reading funny names out loud and laughing at the weird-sounding jobs. One job really caught my eye: Director of Photagraphy. PhotAgraphy. Seriously. Way to go, Credits Editor. But back to photography in the outdoors. Last Saturday, after the workshop, Mr. Stares (the instructor) told us that he and Rob (the organizer) would be reviewing our photos and they would choose the two best. Those two will be displayed in our local art gallery. Tonight, I finally chose the photo that I wanted to submit:
I chose this photo because I love the way it looks as if the "leaves" are embracing and protecting the buds. It just seems... friendly. And caring. And I'm a sucker for that sort of thing. I hope you guys like my choice as much as I do. I wanted to get some feedback before submitting, but I'm a procrastinator so I ran out of time. I'll let you know if I rank in the top two!
Urge to Kill Rising
Tuesday nights here mean two things: a panzerotti deal at Ricardo's and cheap night at the movies. I'm sure you know which one is relevant to my interests. And as with every Tuesday, Jordan and I were on our way to the movies. I was particularly excited this week because we were going to see Insidious, the latest James Wan horror, starring Patrick Wilson (Hard Candy, Watchmen) and Rose Byrne (28 Weeks Later, Get Him to the Greek). Patrick Wilson on his own is scary enough, but Insidious was looking better and creepier with every passing trailer. When we got to the theatre, the concession lines were long and time was short. Jordan waited for popcorn and I ventured forth to save us seats. The ideal seats in our theatres are the seats in the second row from the middle (there's a walkway between the upper and lower seats), behind the wheelchair seats. Why? Because there's a bar conveniently placed to hold your feet and the next row in front of that is a good ten feet away. Thus no giants sit in front of me and block my Keebler Elf eyes. Luckily, there were two available seats exactly where we like them. I sat three seats in so Jordan would be able to put a buffer between me and the aisle. Sitting next to the aisle is more terrifying than anything onscreen (yes, I have many quirks). Comfortably settled, I awaited Jordan's return. Normally, I am not a patient person. I watched the entrance to the theatre like a die-hard fan looking for their favourite singer from the nosebleed section. After what felt like a long while, I checked my phone (which I'd already set to silent) and found a text waiting for me. Jordan was asking if I was in our usual seats. I texted back, but since his text was four minutes old, I began to worry that he had already come in and I'd somehow missed him. Another five or so minutes passed before I was able to make out his general shape entering theatre 9. I waved him over and we arranged our movie watching space. Keeping track of time when inordinately impatient isn't easy, so I'm not sure how long it took, but after what felt like another 10 minutes, a couple came along the row we were in, walked right up to us, and said, "Could you move down a seat?" No, that's not rude. It isn't. If you intend to use the seats that you requested be vacated. Did she? Of course not. Still, that's not such a big deal, but I wasn't entirely comfortable moving closer to the aisle. That was where the anger started. Yes, very small things can set me off. At that point, it was just annoyed grumbling and a few choice swears muttered quietly to Jordan. Then the seats directly behind us were taken. By someone who apparently had the "jimmy-legs" since he couldn't stop kicking my chair. I was getting a little aggravated, but nothing homicidal yet. (From here on out, there's gonna be a lot of profanity and offensive terms. Really offensive. Seriously. If you're opposed to that, I suggest googling some bunnies. They're better than anger and yelling. And so fluffy.) It was my own fault for sitting in front of (very giggly) teenage girls during a horror movie. And when I say "very giggly", I mean they didn't shut the fuck up once. The worst was when their retarded leader walked into the theatre, cell phone in hand, and literally fucking YELLED, "I'M BACK!" while cackling like a schizophrenic hyena mated with a particularly vocal donkey. Their brainless guffaws punctuated the previews and soon enough the opening scene. I shushed them (very angrily at that point -- it's a good thing I didn't have a weapon. Or muscles). Of course, that only made them laugh louder. I considered getting the manager (which I did once when a similarly frustrating group of fucktards acted like game show contestants during The Omen in 2006), but I wasn't willing to miss any of the movie. I just sat there, quietly fuming and plotting my blood-soaked revenge. Sadly, it was just a few randoms morons that put me on the crazy train that night. At random points throughout the film, large groups of idiots burst out laughing. When nothing funny happened. I mean, the film did have some very comedic moments, but these freak fucking chuckle-booms began long before the comedy did. Neither Jordan nor I could figure out what the hell was so damn funny. But as far as the film itself went, it really was fantastic. Terrifying, horrific, jump-inducing, and holy-shit-fucking-scary. Some parts of it were a bit predictable, but still more than worth the money. Just don't go on cheap night if you value your sanity.
