I don’t know who Cat Power is, but she has a lot of followers, AND she’s stealing photos without permission! She stole my photo of a group of us and cut us all out to keep the sign. Acting like she took it herself!

so Im confused. Do you want your face and IG to get exposure or your sign and movement to get exposure? Stealing photos is pretty much common practice on tumblr and IG.

How dismissive can you be? She cut all of us out who actually took to the streets, just to take a clip of the poster without credit. “Stealing photos is common practice” doesn’t mean I condone mine being stolen. Give credit where it’s due. My husband is a professional photographer and he took this photo, so there are also copyright issues.

I highly doubt it was copyrighted and reached the USPTO over night for a sunday approval. I seen multiple images of your sign yesterday, including ones that didn’t have your face in it. I would say your message reached the people, but if you’re looking for credit, then yea, i guess the revolution does need a face….

FYI: In the United States, copyright takes effect at the moment of creation. You don't have to file paperwork to own your work. You may be thinking of trademarks.  She's absolutely right to be protective of her husband's work-- especially if it's his livelihood. We have a habit of disrespecting the artists in our community by devaluing their work. I have a feeling that if he were a white photojournalist with a name no one would be arguing these points.
