You know who I would like to get to see more in the story? Hong. That sweet boy has been there since the beginning but usually gets squished between On and Raon. He has like the middle child syndrome or something. He's always forgotten, he's the weak link, he's usually just made to repeat/reinforce something On or Raon say. We got an actual glimpse of him in the side story with the snow – one of the many reasons it's one of my favorites – but he wasn't the focus. He was there in equal measure to his siblings for once, but what I would love is to see... just him, especially in the novel. Raon's had many moments – I don't think I need to list them – and even On's had her time with Cale, like in the forest to help Litana or sneaking into the academy at the Knights kingdom. But not Hong, we never get to see him alone with Cale.

The other day I was thinking of og!cale and krs!cale's soul swap and I'm wondering, it's only their souls that interchanged, right? So their bodies are the same. Then, doesn't that mean that around Jour's death anniversary, krs!cale would inevitably feel something, without understanding whatever it is?

Grief is stored in the body. Krs knows it, but when a familiar pain shakes his body during completely random days, he can't help but be annoyed.

Considering his life as krs, he couldn't not be unaware of it. It's different for everyone, the pain is, yet he has grieved for so many people that he doesn't need to differentiate it. Maybe unknowingly, maybe as in a muscle memory, his steps move to Jour's room, and when he enters he feels his breath hitch. It's there, it's as if he can finally breathe yet feel himself collapse with every breath.

Ron or his family would definitely notice it, especially if in the past they made a habit of looking after the redhead during those specific days, when og!cale wasn't drunk on alcohol alone.

Im wondering if cale, perceptive and annoyed as he is, does figure it out, but he can't help but simply stare at Jour's portrait hung in the hallway for hours before someone calls him out.

Im wondering if he feels startled at first, but relieved at the familiarity of grief. The body aches, the queasiness, the lump in his throat that never seemed to leave.

And his family's reaction at that, watching him sit for days in his mother's room all alone on his own.

There was something quite angsty that I missed back when reading central plains arc, but my mind suddenly decided to bring up.

Do you remember that dead dragon who could see the future? (Her name was Maxisomething iirc.) Well, I didn’t think much of her bc of the short screen time she got, but I kept wondering how she could see Raon coming to look for her in the future, despite having died hundreds of years prior, since, like Cale, I assumed it was something that ‘wasn’t supposed to happen’ in the future, as Raon should have been dead as per tboah’s fate.

I thought it was a plot hole back then, or maybe something that would be revealed later, but when I gave it more thought.. I think the answer was there all along. She could see the future where Raon came to reach out to her precisely because it is the future that was meant to happen. Lcf is a timeline that had always been ‘meant to be.’ Like, Yes, Og!Cale did reverse back time. Kim Rok Soo did replace Og!Cale. But what if all of that were not variables, and all had been already written in the course of fate?

Kim Rok Soo was not, in fact, supposed to die, because Choi Jung Soo (as he did mention in later chapters) would always chose to die in place of Kim Rok Soo, time and time again, despite how painful it was. There was no other future than the future where Kim Rok Soo survived. That also makes it inevitable for Kim Rok Soo to get yeeted to nameless 1 in one way or another in place of Jung soo, who gave up on his chance to survive and get isekai-ed to save his friend. (ok kill me now) - And all in the end leads to one point: Kim Rok Soo and Cale swapping places, and Cale saving Raon from the fate the dragon had once suffered, the fate that was not meant to repeat again.

So what the dragon with the future attribute saw was the future that had already been decided, where cjs dies instead of krs, and krs became Cale, like it was always meant to be.

Back to tweaking about krs but anw yk how nonchalant our beloved redhead is and how regularly indifferent in matters related to his own well-being? And i think i can understand why.

Like, think back to his life as Krs. Not the mental aspect, the physical one. Let alone Record, he's probably used Instant endless of times, his body was littered with scars everywhere. Even aside from the pain, i doubt he got any proper rest after each mission either. Even if he did, he's not the type to have accepted such grace, is he? Distracting himself with work was the only way he could've repressed his grief in those abysmal years.

And like, now, as Cale, I can imagine why he's so unaffected. He coughs up blood and gets hurt at times and his only reaction is annoyance. Because what else is he supposed to feel? At least he's not bleeding from hundreds of cuts on his body. At least he can rest for a while without the worry of everyone dying in the meantime.

Remember the 'three days to live' arc? And his utterly unbothered reaction, like he just received some additional side quest to fulfill? And yk, it's actually understandable. Compared to having to rush into missions that are basically suicide and watching his teammates and knowing that most of them aren't gonna return back alive. And then having to just move on and do it over and over and over again. Compared to that, getting a three day deadline is actually insanely 'considerate', it's almost a blessing. Especially since he's the one in danger. Because even when he really was supposed to die, he ultimately didn't, did he? So how bad can this be, after all?

And like, it makes sense from his perspective. His life as Cale is so unnervingly different from Rok Soo's that even when you grab your head in frustration you cannot help but agree that his indifference actually makes sense, after all he has gone through.

highly recommend: making that character’s mourning WORSE!!!! make them play pretend with that corpse. make it seem like they’re moving on until they start telling the new person to start dyeing their hair the color of the person they lost and start calling them their name to make it clear that they’re hanging out with this person now to try and make them into the old one. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they die to prove it was unpreventable. make your grieving character put people in the same situation the person they’re mourning died in and have them hope they live to prove that it wasn’t doomed to happened. make your grieving characters actively harm the people around them and the memory of the person they lost. I love you morally dubious grieving characters
