red vs blue was the original dark woke

• multiple strong badass female characters with depth and personality who are not treated as "more special" or "less human", they all act like asshole dudebros just as much as the male characters

• one of the main characters is a likeable and three dimensional depiction of an intellectually disabled person with agency, was created as comic relief for a show that uses the r-word

• the main characters have diverse backgrounds (jewish, black, hawaiian, gay, vegan). they would all call each other slurs

• the show is anti-war and depicts the millitary not as cool and macho but as incompetent and pathetic with its cruelty not made out of a greater purpose but for selfish ends. this is explained through dudebro jokes for 2000s halo gamers

its so funny to me that a group of cis men in texas accidentally made a trans as fuck show, both in concepts/themes (you are who you make of yourself, not what you're brought into this world as, "your name is allison. you're tex" "your name is alpha. you're church") and characters who HAVE to be trans to make sense (kaikaina, a woman who is colorblind and ejaculates, simmons, a man with ovaries, tucker, a man who got pregnant). like. it's not even trans headcanons at this point, this shit canon

We got a feminine man who isn’t gay (donut), a gay Hawaiian and a gay surgically amputeed trans cyborg (grif and simmons), a intellectually impaired soldier who rebuilt a sentient ai with desert scrap metal (caboose), an autistic army leader (sarge), an AI and a army nurse with DID (church and Doc),

The strongest of the cast are female (Tex, Carolina), grif’s sister is so openly sexual and bi that it was a breath of fresh air. Tucker, a dude, didn’t even plan to have that alien baby, but still mentions him with love despite everyone finding it really fucking odd.

And together they expose government corruption and military lies

The craziest thing this show pulled off was to make me, ME, an autistic, premature, disabled, queer woman, man-fearing, feminist, with a disabled veteran family member, see myself in a show that outwardly used the r slur. Like alright I guess you got me rooster teeth! The childish characterization of a brain damaged man was the best damn representation I’ve seen in my 21 years of life, at least bro actually talks abnormally I hate that even disablied people in representation sounds ‘normal’ . Like nah my speech is slow, quiet, and makes sense only half the time, I wanna see more of that!!

rvb Zero & rvb Restoration are apparently ooc and an unnecessary retcon-laden watching experience (plus they're impossible to access)

so a typical rvb chronological watchlist is Blood Gulch -> Project Freelancer -> Chorus Trilogy -> Shisno Paradox (end at s17)

I think I only ever watched up to Project Freelancer, and general consensus seems to be that Chorus is incredibly well-made, so

i'm finally getting caught up on cr4 e31 and man. the clear influences of the player's real life culture in their characters (and in the worldbuilding in brennan's case) is amazing and adds such a richness. like thaisha is so clearly influenced by like. black american folk culture Especially with the orcish revolutionaries. idk if liam is irish but he's at least running with a lot of the irish american working class stuff brennan injected into the world in terms of the hal and the culture of the round. and azune's whole bit about not having anyone to speak his native language to and his disconnect to his own identity (diaspora narrative). i Love when real world cultures are reflected in fiction it's so good.

sorry for copy pasting everyone's tags but i had no idea laura was biracial and that really contextualizes a lot about thimble and her narrative! and i saw aabria mention the tattoos but i forgot about kattigan's weapon and i didn't pick up on the ties to irl mesoamerican folklore. this campaign is fucking amazing and i love seeing all the little details that come from enriching the ttrpg space with real cultures (especially non white ones). it really heightens the storytelling.
