arturodemarinâ:
Arturo listened, bringing his head to sit in the palms of his hands. It had definitely worked in soothing him out of his panic. The worries, however, were another story altogether. He wasnât sure if there was anything that could fix those.Â
He looked up to her when the song reached itâs end. âGracias,â he said quietly, nodding his head. âI would play that forever, over and over again if I could.âÂ
As she finished her song, a crooked smile hung on her face. âWell, Querido, you donât need to live on memories. All you need do is ask. Iâm humbly at your service, meu amigo.â
elliotmurdockâ:
Phillip laughed as she poked at him and he shook his head playfully. âI think you give too much credit to the public. But perhaps.â He teased. He wouldnât ever critique their audience more than that - but they wanted what they wanted, and heâd been feeling more and more pressure lately to conform to just that. He paused for another moment, his eyes watching hers, before he gave her a small smile. âIâll do it, if you sing with me.â He suggested, sipping again at his drink. âYes, we seem to keep missing each other at la belle Ătoile. But Iâm doing well, how about you?â
âI think I give the public just enough credit, thank you.â She gave the performer a little wink. She raised an eyebrow at the requirement, but the small smile that was on her face grew ever so slightly. âAnd what would we sing?â She asked. The canary shrugged. âIâm singing. Iâm alive. Iâm here. How much better could I be?â
charlotte-leighâ:
âNot big enough, it would seem, since Iâve wound up back here, non?â She laughs, but her statement holds true. The world is wide but the city is quicksand. âWhat have I missed?â
âNot terribly much,â Calinda said, trying to think of the events of the past few months. âAt least, not for me.â She pouted for a moment, trying to think of any interesting tidbits to share. âIâve discovered that the world isnât quite that large as well. People have a lovely habit of reappearing.â
slut4beautyâ:
âOh my, it does sound like a bad curse or karma indeed.â He offered with a laugh, then he stood up with a push to his knees and extended his hand towards the young woman. No need to let her in such an ungrateful position for everyone around to see.
âIf you remember the face of your thief, I could sketch a portrait that you could take to the police.â Thankfully his afternoon was free and he had nothing else to do besides meet up with Charlotte later. He couldnât imagine walking off from that kind of situation. âOr yes you could run to the safety of your place, thatâs your choice.â
She gratefully accepted his hand, allowing him to help her up from the ungraceful heap sheâd landed in.Â
âThatâs just my problem. I didnât see their face. I only felt their hand reach into my bag and watched as they ran off with my money.â She tried to smile. âYou are an artist?âÂ
tell me a story (2018â)
kotaeminâ:
A story. His tragic life wrapped up in the form of some sad sob story of someone else and not actual truth. How tempted Tae was to give her a story. But, the words left his split lips in a rush the same way they did when he confessed his feelings on her doorstep in the rain.Â
âMy mother abandoned me as an infant on the steps of a rundown hotel across the Seine and I stayed with that terrible family until I was nine. I only left because I was forced out onto the streets forced to learn how to survive on my own,â he started. Those first few years on the streets of Paris had been the hardest. The winters had been cold and food scarce. âThatâs when the stealing started. The few other street urchins taught me how to take enough francs to fill my belly and showed me where I could sleep in abandoned buildings. I was constantly running, dreaming of a better life in a real home with hard earned money, but the only way out was to take more and more and more.â The words came out angrily. At twenty-nine, Tae was still bitter about his upbringing. Young and dumb Tae thought he was the king of the streets living life to the fullest, but now he knew better. âThe stealing escalated to house break ins and bigger hauls. Sometimes if we got caught people were left behind. I left them to rot thinking it was better them than me.âÂ
âThen the war started.â This part Calinda knew some about. It was easier to be honest about his time as a solider despite the horrors he still saw in his nightmares. âGot my arms shattered and came back home, met you after I was discharged. You were the first real thing in my life and I let your great aunt bribe me into running away.â Tae had to stop for a minute because of his pounding headache and needing to sip some more water. âIâm so sorry for leaving you,â he started, âI was desperate for money and she knew that. Between that and getting my job I could finally pay for my apartment and at the time I didnât even feel bad about it. I was making honest money and living the life I always wanted. I was a fool to think I could ever be a honest man.âÂ
âOnce it got to me struggling to pay rent I went right back to stealing and breaking into houses. I got cocky leaving behind all of the flowers as my moniker. I didnât feel bad about it one bit, I still donât and thatâs what scares me the most. I canât stop. Things got out of hand recently when I took some expensive vases from a mobster and this,â he said motioning to his face, âis what I got in return.âÂ
So that was the truth. Calinda finally knew and Taemin couldnât say he felt relief because all he felt was a nauseous feeling in the pit of his stomach. He was a thief and a liar. Whether Calinda wanted to kick him out of apartment was up to her, but Tae wouldnât fight her. As much as he loved the singer, if she decided to end things the bandit would accept his fate.
She was frozen in her spot. Still holding steadfast to his hand as he told her his story, she blinked back tears. No one should have to go through so much, and yet so many did. Clearly, here was one such soul who had taken the worst of what life had to offer to survive. At the mention of her aunt, she winced slightly. She should have known her aunt had had something to do with one of the only friends sheâd made disappearing and leaving her. Sheâd been so lonely up until sheâd met Taemin, and just as soon as heâd appeared in her life, he had vanished.Â
She hastily wiped a tear from her cheek as he concluded, explaining the events of the evening that had brought him near unconscious on her doorstep. Unable to yet find the right words to respond to such a story, she pressed his hand against her lips. The look on her face wasnât one of hate, or disgust, or revulsion, but rather unconditional love. She sniffled slightly, putting his hand back down as she collected herself. âQuerido, Iâm so, so sorry. I know my apologies are meaningless, but someone has to say theyâre sorry for the lot life handed you.â She gave a heavy sigh shaking her head. âIf I ever meet this mobster, heâs going to have some bigger problems on his hands than some missing vases. You donât have to lie to me. I love you, Taemin.â Her voice was soft, but steady.Â
kotaeminâ:
Without her presence beside him, Tae struggled and failed to move into a sitting up position. One of the bastards had kicked him in the ribs, so it was highly possible a few of them were cracked. He pulled the blanket tighter to keep out the chill in the air. His swollen eyes stayed firmly shut to keep him from watching the world spin around him. âMerci,â Tae said to small hands that helped lift up his tall frame.Â
Trust. That word haunted Taemin for years. His mother broke his trust when she abandoned him as a child, his foster parents when they kicked him out at the tender age of nine, and his fellow soldiers when they died in front of him. Tae didnât trust. People were untrustworthy down to their core. Yet, Calinda never showed him nothing but love and a commitment to him. His sipped quietly at the water until nearly half the glass was gone. That selfish bone continued to scream only getting louder in his mind to protect himself, to lie once more.
âIâm not who you think I am, minha luz,â he whispered unable to look at anything but his glass.Â
She noticed him fighting with the blanket, and on her way back with the water, she grabbed an extra blanket. Calinda stretched it out over him as he drank. She sat still. She was filled with quiet patience as she watched him drink. She wanted to reach out and hold on to him, but she was frightened she might hurt him more.Â
Calinda scooted closer. Her head tilted to the side as she finally reached out and took his hand. âThen who are you, meu coração?â She asked, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. âTell me a story, Taemin.â

Phillip raised his glass in unison with her, shaking his head. âI am only being honest. Besides, I donât believe in too much kindness.â He pointed out, sipping at his drink. He was still incredibly new to the music scene in Paris. After all, being only nineteen, it would have been rather impressive if he became prevalent before then. As she asked him to sing, he raised a single eyebrow at her, but then shrugged. âIâm not dressed for a performance, I wouldnât want to appear informal.â If she continued prodding, he would agree - but this excuse gave her an out, if she was just being polite.Â
She pouted at the younger singer, poking at him playfully. âI do not think they will much care what youâre wearing when you open your mouth.â She said, sipping her champagne with a knowing look. âbut it is entirely up to you.â Calinda wasnât one to push. If he truly wanted to sing, he would. She knew what it was like to be forced to perform, and wouldnât wish it on anyone. âSo how have you been, Meu bem? I havenât seen you in a while.â
kotaeminâ:
What could Calinda do? Taemin didnât have an answer for his girlfriend yet. Now he knew she had seen the bruises, cuts, and disaster that was his face, she was going to have questions that the bandit didnât have the will to give her. It was his fault for stealing from the wrong mobster. With knowledge of who he truly is surely she would leave him. That selfish bone in his body screamed for Tae not to reveal his secrets.Â
âWater,â he croaked out. On top of the bruises circling his neck like a necklace, his throat was dry and itchy from having swallowed so much blood earlier in the night. The drink could give him a few more minutes to think past his headache and come up with a fake story to sell her.
The woman nodded, quickly rising from the floor to fetch him a glass. She tried to still her shaking hands long enough to pour the water into the glass. Calinda was truly shaken. She couldnât recall a single time some poor battered soul had shown up on her doorstep in the past. Having Taemin be the first to claim the title troubled her even more. She needed to know what had happened.Â
Steeling herself, she returned to his side. Calinda tried to help him sit up a little so he could drink. When she had, she sat quietly next to him, unsure of what to say next. âSo,â She said, her voice unusually quiet. âWhat happened?â She paused a moment, looking down at her hands which were wringing one another nervously. âYou donât... You donât have to tell me. But I hope you know that you can trust me.â

It wasnât often that Phillip appeared at the Ătoile on a night where he wasnât performing, but if Calinda was on stage, he had to. It was smarter than appearing as Elliot, anyway. The attention was better than being revealed. He sat near the bar once the final song ended, ordering himself a drink. He only looked up from his glass when he heard Calinda herself speak to him and his eyes flicked up at her, a smile forming on his face. âAnyone not enjoying their evening must be deaf.â He stated plainly. âIt was beautiful. As always.âÂ
Calinda gave the younger man a bright smile, raising her glass in a small salute. âYou are too kind,â She laughed, the corners of her eyes scrunching up as she shook her head. He was a sweet boy, and an incredible musician. She hadnât been a part of the jazz scene of Paris much longer than he had. In fact, she finally got started making music how she wanted to, and not how she was expected to. âNow, how much begging would it take to convince you to do a song, even though itâs your night off?â

Nights at the Cafe Eâtoile were some of Calindaâs favorites. She loved singing in the atmosphere the cafe provided, and she loved the acoustics the room had. She was in a splendid mood, and her set was going wonderfully. The song she was singing was one of her particular favorites. She was such a fan of Gershwinâs compositions and this song spoke to her. It had a different meaning now that love had found its way into her life. As the song drew to an end, she uttered a soft thanks to the audience before she went on a break. She floated over to the bar, the bartender popping the cork on a bottle of champagne and handing her a glass. She sipped on the glass of liquified starlight and turned to the person closest to her. âEnjoying your evening so far?â She asked with a soft smile.
