Charlotte, as with any Moulin Dancer, performs a fair few group dances each night on stage during the two shows, but as highest ranking performer, she is also given a few solo slots to do with what she pleases. This is a bit of a challenge for her because, as most can figure out, she is certainly not the most talented dancer in the group.Β
Her solo performances are most often burlesque performances by nature. Throughout her career, she has become close friends with Josephine Baker, who is one of her biggest inspirations for her routines, along with Annette Micheaux and Lusine Deschamps. She is rarely seen in costumes made up of anything other than pink, ivory, or pearls, and works hard to create the aesthetic imagery of a girl straight out of a dream. While some performers go for more of a traditionally sexy or simple girl-next-door type of look, Charlotte aims to be the picture of indulgence each time she steps on stage.Β
Her costumes are designed almost exclusively by Zahra and herself, and she most often wears baby pink with gold accents to match her hair. There is rarely much fabric to them, but the same can be said for any Moulin performer. There are typically multiple pieces to them so that some can be removed, and with each performance she tosses one article of clothing to an audience member. Typically this is a glove, necklace, or garter.Β
She usually performs fan dances with large white ostrich feather fans with crystals scattered over the surface to reflect the light, and these are some of her most scantily clad performances until she reveals a skimpy costume at the end. In addition to this, Lusine gave Charlotte lessons on aerial silks while they worked together at Le Ciel, and she was the first dancer to bring them to the Moulin Rouge. It is one of the few performances that she is truly talented in and is genuinely proud of, and she spends a fair amount of time practicing in the rehearsal rooms.Β
madame-mxnaβ:
Near the corner of the room, she observed the people in attendance, much like a hawk would itβs prey. The room was still full, she noted, for today at least. Putting JβAccuse on display once again, with some pieces from her very first collection was a brilliant idea, but Mona knew she was riding on her wave of success for far too long. She knew this was a distraction, for the people to immerse themselves into her finer pieces, to prove she was still relevant. And perhaps a motivator to her, to do better, to surpass even herself.
Mona didnβt mingle amongst the guests. That didnβt mean she wasnβt sociable. If someone had a question about a certain piece, sheβd answer. If someone complimented her art, sheβd thank them. Or, sometimes, a certain gallery-goer would spark a conversation. As was the case with the blonde. Mona shook her hand, averting her gaze then to the painting in question.
βAh, that one. I remember painting her, a dancer from the Moulin. Funny, she wanted the thing to be an advertisement for her show, and well, I got carried away. The poor girl left it with me for a couple of francs,β Mona chuckled at the memory, glancing again at the woman beside her, then back at the painting, then at the woman. The similarities in their features were much more than a coincidence.
ββ¦shit, you could be her twin. Or better yet, her. Are you, in fact?β
It is not at all a rarity for Charlotte to overhear people talking about her, but to hear her own story and experience recited back to her is a new experience. It was almost lonely, in a way that made her curious as to what else the artist would say about her if Charlotte were anyone else. A small smile cracks on her face as she looks at the portrait sitting among the other pieces, and feels a small pang of regret in her chest for not taking the painting those years ago.Β
βAh, youβve found me out, Iβm afraid.β She laughs and extends a hand to shake. It feels oddly formal and out of place considering how vulnerable she had been in front of Mona, once upon a time, for long hours in the studio being sketched from various angles.Β βCharlotte Leigh. It is nice, although strange, to meet you again like this.βΒ
She does a small twirl on the tips of her toes, taking in all of the artwork surrounding them. Itβs magnificent, really, but many of the pieces look familiar -- she can recall seeing JβAccuse in the past. Though, how long had Charlotte been doing the same fan dance at the Moulin Rouge? She held not the slightest bit of judgment.Β
βIt is funny how much has changed since then, it seems as if you painted a child that is all grown up now.β It certainly felt as if she had lived a full lifetime and a half since then.Β βI must admit, I always wondered where the painting ended up.β
arturodemarinβ:
For the first time in a while, Arturo could move about an early morning without it being an aching end-point of a night of recklessness. At her request, heβd managed to piece himself together well enough to get some sleep and rise early to trace the steps they use to take, week after week through the markets of Montmartre. Even if the few sous that were jingling in his pocket would not be spent there, it was the least he could do to manage a trip with Charlotte.Β
βI have been many places, and I can tell you there is nowhere like this.β That was both a blessing and a curse, but neither of them were strangers to such truth. He squeezed her hand in his own as they strolled past the vendors setting up their stalls.Β
βShould I be afraid?βΒ
As her heels continue to hit the old stone street, well worn by the pair of lovers and the rest of Paris, it is almost easy to imagine that they are eight years younger and just experiencing all of this for the first time. The slope of both their shoulders, as if carrying the heaviest of burdens, prevents her from fading into the past and living this day as if it were a scene from a movie rather than being almost stiflingly present. She supposed that she was grateful for that though, as Arturo was one of the only people in her life that she had ever learned to be trulyΒ present with. That, however difficult or scary it may be, was a gift in itself.Β
Her fingers trace over different textiles and hair pins as they walk, smiling grateful merciβsΒ to each vendor they pass. She stops for only a moment to marvel at a pair of golden starburst earrings, wide smile brimming across her face as she lifts them up to Arturoβs ears.Β
βI have always thought gold suited you, havenβt you?β In only a moment she has handed the vendor a couple of francs that were plucked from her clutch, and the earrings are tucked into a brown paper bag, and into Arturoβs pocket.Β βI couldnβt pass them up, you are always my star after all.βΒ
A moment falls between them as they continue walking, unsure of how to ask him what she needs to ask.
βHave I ever given you reason to be afraid of me? Itβs only a simple favor that I need.β She looks up at him and rests her temple on his shoulder.Β βDo you remember how you used to help me practice?βΒ

Bedroom:
Just like each dancer at the Moulin Rouge, Charlotte was given a bedroom to stay in when she was first hired. The rooms for most dancers are decently sized, and are allowed to be decorated by the dancers as they see fit, to an extent. She collected various props and textiles to decorate her room from the years she worked at both Le Ciel and The Moulin. Her bedroom looked a lot like this and this.Β
For the past four or so years, Charlotte has worked as the diamond of the Moulin Rouge, which means she resides in the infamous Red Room. The room is significantly larger than her old bedroom and has a view of the red windmill, decorated in extravagant red and gold. When she first moved in she found it to be decadent and luxurious, but the more time she spends there the more isolated it feels from the other dancers and courtesans. She had no say in the decorating of this room, and is allowed to make only minor changes and rearrangements. It is similar to the main ballroom of the Moulin in design, and clients pay small fortunes to be entertained in this room.Β
The room has a king sized bed and various settees, a private balcony that faces the garden and one facing the city, a large walk in closet, as well as its own bathroom -- a luxury in the Moulinβs living quarters.Β
Closet:
Her closet is one of few renovations she was allowed to make to the Red Room, after reminding the Madame that she could finance it herself after seeing only a couple of clients. There had been a small sitting area in the Red Room that was very seldom used, and the small closet that was offered to her upon moving in would not be enough to hang her extravagant costumes and gowns, so she proposed to turn the sitting room into her own boudoir and dressing area. She has a vanity mirror with lights surrounding, and racks where she keeps her clothing hung, as well as trunks where she keeps clothing or costume pieces that she no longer uses but would like to keep. There is a leopard print carpet and a small stool where she sits to do her makeup, and a gramophone that she often listens to while getting ready.Β
Bedding:Β
Charlotteβs bedding is red velvet with gold thread, with different fur and down throw blankets that are often draped over it as well. She has lots of different pillows that she keeps on her bed and the various lounge seats, and she has many different sets of sheets that she replaces frequently.Β
Nightstand:
She has a small nightstand beside her bed where she keeps a lamp, a cigarette case and lighter, a journal, and a couple of books. When she is entertaining patrons in her bedroom, she places silk ropes and candles on the nightstand as well, and itβs not unusual to also see a bottle of wine or liquor set atop it either.Β

bharisinclairβ:
Heβd been following along as best as one learning about the types of ways his was love was being fucked by half the city could. It was a dumb question for him to have asked, he soon realized. Ignorance was a bliss that hindsight could not return him to.Β
The nausea that threatened to creep up the back of his throat and made his face warm could not be swallowed down upon hearing what came out of Charlotteβs mouth.Β
What was worse? Knowing that his love had once been paid to be part of a mé·nage Γ trois with the woman he tried desperately to no avail to replace her with? Or was it the fact that such an event happened with one of his coworkers? Just when he thought the fates had decided to take a break on pulling his luck in every which direction, they were back at it with a vengeance. What the Hell had he done to deserve this? Surely this could only have been karma for pulling a trigger on a man in the Marnes, but the only other option to that would have been death.Β
Death would have been preferable to knowing all of this. Especially when he believed he knew who the culprit was.Β
βWhich man from the Journal?β is all the writer could choke out after a moment of staring into Charlotteβs eyes, and hoping for her to reveal this was all one big joke.Β βWhich man from the Journal,β he repeated louder, which was hardly anything at all when heβd begun in a whisper.
She hadnβt meant to upset him, and she certainly hadnβt meant to incriminate Annette, but she supposed her intentions may as well have been thrown to the wind. It is rationalized in her mind as she watches him, the gears in his head certainly turning at a hundred miles an hour, explained away because she determines that if she were him, she would want to know.Β
Though her loyalty will always belong to Annette, the illicit affairs that took place behind closed doors at the Moulin Rouge were hardly a secret, and it was better for Bhari to find out from Charlotte than from a coworker or acquaintance spilling dirty gossip over gin rickeys. At least, thatβs what she told herself to make it seem as though she hadnβt just accidentally ruined something so wonderful.Β
βI should not have told you all of that. I fear itβs the alcohol going to my he-β she begins, attempting to explain it away, hoping that Bhari may let it go as the ramblings of a dizzy drunk blonde. When he raises his voice, she leans back, shying away from the potential complication.
βThe one who writes the reviews. Iβm not sure of his name... de Silver, maybe? Something like that.β Her eyes widen and she takes a deep breath. As miserable as he is, she cannot help but project her own relationships onto his. Would this be how Frank or Arturo would feel, knowing exactly what she did when she was working? There was a certain blessing that came from the anonymity of the pretty niceties the courtesans used to hide what was reallyΒ taking place.
βGabriel. Thatβs his name. Iβm sorry, Bhari.β She sets a hand over his.Β βI shouldnβt have told you, but I want to be honest.β

bharisinclairβ:
βYou make it sound so easy,β he laughed, though he felt not a drop of joy about the subject.Β βOnce I begin to think about how to approach the subject itβs as if my head wonβt allow me. It forces me to think ofβ¦ well, just about anything else.β
The Writer attempted to make himself small, to shrink away from the surrounding bodies of the club, but he realized his back was up against the bar and there was nowhere else to go. The only choice he had now, when forced to face the topic he had previously tried with great success to avoid at every turn, was to confront it. He could think of no better person to have by his side as he faced such horror than Charlotte.Β
ββBut what of her regular patrons? Certainly they wouldnβt be so adaptable.β He sighed and rubbed at his brow.Β βYou know, there are times when I imagine this scenarioβof her finding somewhere to dance where no one expects anything of her beyond thatβand even in fantasy I think of the possibility of them following her. Thatβs my paranoia showing, butβ¦ Is it wrong to think that they are all out to hurt her?βΒ He would not specify beyond that, as it felt somehow odd to make himself more vulnerable than he already has by actually saying the word patrons.
As much as he hated the idea of asking the question, there was some comfort to be attained in knowing the answer, so long as it was positive. βAre there kindΒ ones?βΒ
βItβs not easy, of course itβs not.β She laughs as well, though she knows that her own situation is just as deeply complicated as Annetteβs, if not worsened by her older age. To believe that there was hope for her friend meant there would be hope for herself as well, and most days even the littlest bit of hope was all that she had.Β βLeaving England wasnβt easy, nor was the war, or writing your book or traveling to America and back again. But you did all of those things, however impossible they may have once seemed.β She offers him a shrug. If anyone could do it, it would be him.Β βPeople climb mountains every day.βΒ
Of course she knew how difficult it would be to escape the web that this life wove for them, how very sticky and tangled the silk threads of red velvet curtains and satin costumes would be the moment Annette tried to make her escape, but eventually a choice would have to be made. The choice between a life of settling for less in the belly of the red monster that was the cabaret, or a life where she could have something real. The two, Charlotte knew well enough, would prove to be mutually exclusive sooner rather than later.
βI can tell you that when I crossed the pond to London, very few of my regular visitors even tried to contact me. There are other girls to entertain them, and that will always be true.β It was perhaps a harsh reality, that patrons sought little more than a warm bed -- but she supposed that perhaps it could be a comfort to Bhariβs current predicament.Β
βAs wonderful as she is, they donβt loveΒ her the same way my visitors donβt loveΒ me. Theyβll find someone else to meet their needs.β
Are there kind ones?Β
She has never hated a question so much. Not necessarily because she did not have an answer, but because she does not want to tell him the truth. Of course there are kind patrons, they canβt all be bad, can they?, though she doesnβt suppose that the knowledge of patrons paying to treat Annette so sweetly would set Bhariβs mind to ease. She draws in a deep breath and finishes off the drink in her glass.
βThere are kind ones. Visitors who are simply lonely or unlucky in love, who want a placeholder for the person they are truly thinking of. People who are almost tender, should you forget the reality of the situation.β The champagne has gone to her head, but that doesnβt stop her, does it?
βThat man from Le JournalΒ was not so bad, I believe. I heard he was kind to her and to Flori together, once upon a time.βΒ
