“Pardon, I hate to be a bother but… may I ask for your help?”

“Hey… are you alright?”

“I’ve never seen you before… you new around these parts?”

“You look kind of lonely… want some company?”

“I’m sorry, did you need something?”

“You look kinda lost, if you don’t mind me saying. You okay?”

“… What are you staring at?”

“Hey, stranger, be careful!”

mood: the third starter pokemon that doesn’t get picked

“NO!” screamed the boy, his eyes opening wide.  The wild Inkay was practically smirking; though perhaps that was only his perception.

Polyswag, despite its previous Trainer’s poor taste in names, lay lifeless on the ground.  Cal shook the Pokemon, hoping, praying that it would wake up.

Nope.  He’d hoped that perhaps the faulty Holo Caster might have something to do with his Nuzlocke status; fix it--fix him--somehow.  But, no.  There was no escaping it.  Polyswag was dead.

Cal, despite himself, had grown fond of the Pokemon.  It was a water-type; perfect for the next Gym he was going up against.  He’d just have to catch something else.

Which reminded him--the Inkay.  He grimaced (he’d enjoy seeing that one get traded away) and threw a Poke Ball--unfortunately, his last one.  The Inkay broke through the Poke Ball, much to his dismay.

One Quick Attack later, it was dead.

“R-ralts...use Teleport...” he said, barely able to form the words.  The Ralts had been a “gift” from a Japanese Trainer.  It had been traded at level 1, but a few battles later it was almost on par with the rest of his team.

Something must have happened--a conflict with his Holo Caster or something--because, before he knew it, he was lying on the ground in a town he didn’t recognize.

“Wh...” he stuttered.  As if Polyswag’s death wasn’t enough...he checked the map on his Holo Caster and jumped up in surprise.

“Littleroot Town?!  Isn’t that in...”

Welp, he killed the Pikachu in Santalune Forest...and the Burmy on Rt. 3.  Pity, he was so close to catching that one, too.  It had run out of PP and used Struggle, much to Cal’s dismay.

Luckily, he now had the Bug Badge (and a Riolu-turned-Taillow), after a very close call with Viola’s Vivillion. Skiddo had been a good choice against Surskit, but he hadn’t known she was weak against Infestation.  She had barely made it in the end, but she had made it.  Cal made a metal note to buy more Potions later.

After stocking up at the Santalune Pokemon Center, he headed out to Route 4.  He managed to catch a Ledyba before his Holo Caster lit up again...much to his dismay, he was beginning to get used to this.  He held his breath and waited for the trade to complete.

A Polywag.  A Polywag named...Polyswag.  Goddammit.

The neighbor kids seem nice, mused Cal as he wandered through Santalune Forest.  His Fennekin, Merlin, was sweet, too, as well as the Pidgey he had caught on Route 1.

Suddenly, his Holo Caster began to flash.  He looked down and saw the PSS had started a wonder trade...without his permission!

“Wait...what?  It’s not supposed to...”  But, before he could stop it, he had traded away both of his precious new Pokemon...for a Skiddo and a Machop.  Not a bad trade, but still.

He had heard of this.  A line of first-edition Holo Casters that glitched whenever the Trainer caught a new Pokemon.  Looks like he had gotten one of these “Wonderlocke” Holo Casters...shit.  He’d trade it for a new one when he got to Lumiose.

Drabble

The newspaper was an old one, but he kept it with him anyways.  It was gray and tattered by now, but he could still make out the headline.

“17-year-old Pokemon Trainer killed by unknown shooter!”

Heh.  He was 19 now, two years later, and the “unknown shooter” had gotten away.  Poor Aaron.  Cal almost felt bad, but his brother had volunteered to take the blame.  Plus, he had a great lawyer.

The only one he did feel bad for was Irene.  She had no idea what had happened, and if there was one thing she hated, it was being clueless.  It was for the best, he had thought.  If she knew, she would try to stop him and hasten the inevitable.  Instead, he had just caused the rift between his siblings to greaten.

But that was all behind him now.  Kalos was Oliver-free as far as he knew, and he looked forward to traversing it with his new Pokemon.  Who knows, maybe he’d make some human friends, too.
