Zaid laughed “No surprise there, you always love disagreeing with me when it comes to your self-image, so I’m used to but that won’t stop me to fight you and tell you that you, my friend are wrong.” He winked at her.  “Were you thinking of a romantic comedy?” He couldn’t help to be curious about it.

He took a sip of his drink and listen to her “You have never felt butterflies, I mean I get that you didn’t go through the teen romance phase but haven’t you get those things, over nothing, cause it doesn’t have to be just for a guy, it could also be for something else.” Zaid smiled “You are right about that, no guy will probably love you more than I do.”

“Excuse me, dweeb, I don’t disagree with you just to disagree with you. I was just making a point. At the end of the day I can’t be too damn smart if I need you to constantly bail me out. Even you who likes to contradict me all the time can’t deny that one, my dear.” Reaching up with one hand Callie poked him in the chest both to emphasize her point and to teasingly scold him for teasing her. “Not funny in the slightest, Zaid Zidan. You know damn well my brain does not work that way. You’re not new.”

“My brother, Elias, he used to get them when he was really scared of something. I think maybe I’m the same way. I can only think of one thing though that would scare me that much but…it’s not really an issue so it’s nothing to worry about.” The blonde stared into her drink for a moment, perhaps a moment too long and then took a drink. Talking about her brothers always made her a little uneasy- but that was simply because that wound was still raw and refused to begin to heal. “Well…isn’t that an amazing piece of symmetry,” she mused after a moment, placing her drink down next to where she sat so she could reach up and wrap her arms around his neck in a hug. “Because I can almost guarantee you no girl will ever love you as much as I do, nerd. Which is why your future girlfriend better be good enough for you or we’re gonna fight about it.” Lifting herself up she pressed a kiss to his cheek, purposely louder than necessary but hey, she did that to him a lot.

“Well, he was a moron for not doing it. I know you are your own worst enemy and I think there’s nobody in this world that could see and talk so bad about you than yourself. But you are one hell of a catch, you are beautiful, you are funny and very smart, so I don’t see what’s not to like.” He smiled “And before you start to telling me how you disagree and tell me I’m crazy and we go in this infinity loop of you trying to convince me on something impossible to convince me of, let just move on from that you are not a girl guys fall of.” He shrugged and smirk “Probably because you never asked me and because I was a teenager when it happened, so whatever big romantic comedy you just created in your head, it was just my first love you know teen days so it was a pretty innocent time for me, it didn’t last that long, but it was the first time I truly felt those butterflies and did all the things people in love do.”

“Beg to disagree with every single one of your points but especially the smart one. If I was so smart then I wouldn’t need to have my best friend play fake boyfriend because I get myself into a mess all of the time, would I?” Callie countered, one of her pale eyebrows raising slightly as though daring him to contradict that statement. A smart person would know how to handle those types of situations much better than she did, that was for sure. “But now I also just feel insulted. I’m not the type of girl to think of romantic comedies. I’m more like…a disaster mentality kind of girl. Let’s be real here.”

In truth talking about having feelings for anyone with him just felt weird. Not just for the reasons that she could never talk to him about but because she had absolutely gotten to the whole having feelings for someone thing much later in life than most people. That definitely said something about her. What it was? She wasn’t sure but she doubted it was anything good. “Never went through that teenage romance thing. And I think if I had the butterfly thing it skipped out pretty quickly. Probably because I knew right away it wouldn’t go anywhere.” Or maybe she was just in denial about how much of that stupid, silly first love shit she went through. It was easier to pretend she had never felt it at all. It was safer that way, too. “But I guess I don’t need a guy to love me like that. Because at least I have the love of my best friend, right?”

“You do know I don’t care much about what people might think, if they want to think that then…” He shrugged and smiled. Truth was that he didn’t care about her stealing half of his bed, in fact, he kind of enjoyed it, but really there was no way he would say it.

“Excuse you but I should be the one insulted since I’m your last resort to get away from annoying people” He poked her and smile to let her know that really, he wasn’t insulted at all, nor that he didn’t minded. He shrugged “What can I say I haven’t found someone I like, I mean I like a lot of people around the ship, but not in that way.” Zaid laughed “Of course I have. What about you, have you?” He looked at her raising his eyebrow.

Callie scrunched her nose up, not entirely sure that she believed him. Not because she thought of him as a liar- hell, she was almost entirely sure he had never actually lied to her in the entire time that they had known each other. It was more like she believed he was humoring her- or maybe he had gotten so used to people thinking whatever they wanted to about them. But she highly doubted he was completely alright with the idea of their crew thinking he enjoyed her stealing half his bed- or that they were more than friends. Why would he enjoy something like that?

The blonde just stared at him on the heels of his question. Stared for too long and had to clear her throat, take a sip of her drink. There was no way she was going to actually be able to answer that question completely though it wasn’t as though he could know that- or why. “I just told you I’ve only ever had romantic feelings for one person, Zaid. But as I said- he didn’t see me that way. Not that I’m surprised. I’m not the girl guys fall for.” It wasn’t truly an answer but it was the only one that she could give. Any other answer? Well, it would make their relationship awkward, would change things- might even make him want to spend less time with her. It was definitely not something she could risk. “But excuse you, sir, how is it that your best friend never knew this? Spill the details.”

“You say that as I didn’t know already” He laughed “Come on Callie, it’s not like we just met, we have done this before so I already know the kind of friend I have and I really don’t mind, lucky for you I have the room to myself. So your drunk ass can have a half of my bed without worrying too much about it.” He laughed and asked for more drinks.

“Let the eyebrows be raised” He laughed “Look is not like there is there a lot of options out there, we are lost on a ship, I already met everyone there is so if it happened before it won’t happen any time so. I’m happy with my fake marriage.”

“Watch out now, Zaid. People might begin to think you enjoy me stealing half of your bed when I’m drunk,” the blonde teased, both eyebrows raised slightly, the corners of her mouth turning up slightly in amusement. She knew it was more like he was accustomed to her, put up with her drunk antics and simply looked out for her. But that didn’t mean she wasn’t going to tease him about it. Poking fun at him sometimes was just part of their relationship-a part he had never seemed to mind. So she wasn’t about to change it. Why fix what isn’t broken, right?

“You know, if I didn’t know what you meant? The implication that I would be an okay last resort would be pretty damn insulting, dork.” Luckily she knew that he wasn’t trying to insult her. In truth she couldn’t ever remember him saying anything to her that was ever truly insulting even if at times she probably deserved it. She wasn’t the easiest person in the world at times so any bad thoughts that might cross his mind about her would be justified. Yet he never truly seemed to judge her or think badly of her. It was surprising to say the least. “Come to think of it- I don’t remember you ever mentioning liking anyone,” Callie mused, taking a sip of her drink in thought. “Have you never been in love, my dear?” she teased- though she was the last person who could judge. Emotional connection wasn’t easy for her so she couldn’t judge the love life of anyone else.

“This is an egalitarian marriage you pay one time, I pay next, see, it a good marriage where we are both same.” He smirked knowing that even when she was complaining about paying he knew that she would anyway or even at the end of the night there was a big possibility that it would be him the one paying despise what he had said. Zaid sat next to her and raised his glass “Wanna make a toast?”

A loud chucked came after her poking, Zaid came closer to her with a smirk, knowing that she was being serious about denying ever mention that she was handsome. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone, I’ll keep that secret, but see, then the marriage with your bestie doesn’t sound that bad, at least you will be a good-looking couple.”

“Here’s the problem with that, my dear- you pay for half my drinks and you’re going to be dealing with drunk, clingy Callie. Drunk clingy Callie who ends up stealing half of your bed and crashing in your room for the night. And half the time steals one of your shirts to sleep in because my clothes are definitely not sleep friendly today. And as much as you love may love me, Zaid-eventually you’re going to get tired of me being a clingy drunk stealing half of your bed.” Despite her teasing him about the possible outcome of the night they both knew it was a distinct possibility. More often than not when she drank too much she ended up crashing in his room and being extremely huggy in her sleep. He never complained but still. Though she supposed drunken hugs were a little less awkward than the handful of times they got drunk and kissed while she was having him lay her fake boyfriend.

“Oh, no, you misunderstand me, Z.” Putting her drink down the blonde reached up with both hands and pressed her palms against his cheeks, lifted herself up to press a kiss to the tip of his nose. “You are just so out of my league that even our fake marriage would raise some eyebrows. You’re too handsome and too good for me, dweeb. So, whatever girl you end up with better be worthy of you. Or she’s going to have me to answer to.”

“Cause I’m cute?” He laughed; he knew well enough that she was playing so why not playing too. She could come with all kinds of nicknames, giant, dweeb and a mixed of the two being the ones that were almost always used, but he didn’t mind them. He had figure out that she didn’t had other people she would give other pet names, so he figured out along time ago, that it was her way to show him that she trusts him, and cared about him. “Hey I never said the most traditional one, just say one, but see even you agree with it.” He smiled back at her.

“That’s not up to me, you have to grow, it’s the theory of evolution, you need to grow” He chuckled “And since you put it like that, we will have to come with a plan, but not tonight. Tonight you are buying me a drink cause that’s how our platonic marriage work.”

“See, I don’t remember there being a part in this fake marriage contract where it says I have to provide you alcohol. We might have to renegotiate these terms and conditions.” Yet despite her words Callie pulled herself up onto the nearest surface so she could look him in the face a little easier and nodded towards the bartender, silently ordering another round for her friend. It was just a part of how she interacted with him. Somehow she always felt the need to give him shit- but perhaps that was because even when they had first met she had been giving him a hard time. Even while she was injured and he was patching her up? The blonde had been unable to stop herself from giving him a hard time. Maybe it was just instinct, like somehow she knew that they would get along. Maybe even some small part of her somehow knew how important he would become to her. Who knew for sure?

“And excuse me, how dare you insult my best friend.” Reaching out Callie poked his chest even while knowing that the action wouldn’t bother him at all. It wouldn’t be the first or last time she did something like that for sure but she also knew she couldn’t hurt him. She was pretty sure that even if she tried her hardest? She’d barely leave a mark. “My best friend is not cute,” she argued, trying to sound offended by the very idea though she was well aware it fell flat. “My best friend is handsome. But if anyone ever asks if I said that I will deny it.”

“No need to get violent” He smirked, it was all part of a joke, one that held some truth behind it but said in a way that he wouldn’t make her panic and overthink like he already knew she did sometimes and away from where he would let her know there was a big possibility that he would just stay her side as long she let him. Zaid wrapped his arms around her and laughed at her groan. “Well, then see we are almost a married couple if you see or the technicalities.”

Zaid chuckled “Ugh see I wasn’t that good at that class in my DNA major, I was all focused on the diseases genetic part. Or I think I missed the composition part where they showed how DNA made you have a couple or not.” He smirked “Well I’m glad to know I break that rule of you not loving people, I would start to think I’m friends with a sociopath” He laughed and kissed her forehead “But now, all jokes aside Callie, you need to stop seeing the future with such a fatalist sight because you don’t know what might come your way because I really doubt you knew you would meet me and get stuck on a ship and be lost in space. So, nothing is fully written, unless you are a witch and no the future, and you have been hiding that from me all the time.”  

“Ugh, still a jackass. Why am I friends with you again?” Except they both knew the question wasn’t serious. The truth of the matter was that she kind of adored that giant dweeb she called her best friend. Even her nicknames for him, the kind many might consider to be her picking on him, were always out of love. If she didn’t adore him the way she did then she wouldn’t have even bothered coming up with those nicknames for him. So even if she was calling him a jackass she leaned into his embrace knowing far too well that she wasn’t really mad at him- or even frustrated. And so she leaned into his embrace, her own arm still around his waist. From the outside she was probably completely invisible due to his sheer size compared to hers but, hell, she was used to that. It was why she would jokingly call him her human wall when she needed a blocker between herself and others. “The most platonic of married couples but sure, Zaid. We’re totally like a married couple,” she teased, loading her eyes slightly even as the corners of her lips turned up slightly ina smile.

“Here’s the problem with your whole theory...” Trailing off the blonde tilted her head up again so she could look at his face, both of her eyebrows raised slightly. “How am I ever going to find a guy I could possibly love as much as my best friend? Even if he’s so tall I get a crick in my neck when trying to look at his face,” she teased though to be fair- he was nearly a foot taller than her. The height difference struggle was real which was why she usually would sit on a table or something when they were out somewhere and having a longer conversation. “And in the spirit of transparency- you break a lot of my rules, Zaid. Not just about being the exception to the rule about me loving people.” Probably more than she would care to admit.

He chuckled “Then we have nothing to worry about, I think is fair to say that we won’t get tired of each other, we are beyond that phase by now” He smirked as he held her. It wasn’t like he didn’t know her already, they have been friends for a while now and he had seen and heard almost every speech she had to pull herself down and to say that he would get tired of her, but here they were still the same, if not even a lot closer than before.

“You know I don’t say nice things to you because I’m your best friend, if you fuck it up and go crazy or do something bad, I will sure tell you that you screw big time. I will always tell you the truth.” Zaid laughed “Hey if we go for the fake marriage it’s because I gave up on looking for someone else so you will be stuck with me forever.” He smiled “So it’s a deal you already gave up, the moment I give up on finding anyone is you and me for life, just like now but we’ll be leaving together.”

"You suck and you're a jackass," Callie replied, trying her best to look genuinely offended at him saying he'd be stuck with her even as she leaned against him. But not only was she all too aware he knew her too well to buy it but in the end her amusement won out and she ended up laughing, turning to press her forehead against his side with a groan. "And I'll have you know that when you get super technical we kind of already leave together since we live in the same place. So, I always come home to you, dweeb. Just not in the way people think." Not that she didn't sometimes end up in his room after the crew was out like that. But that was just because she had a tendency to go hang out there and would end up falling asleep.

“And I haven’t given up,” the blonde argued, nudging her elbow into his side as though she were insulted by the very insinuation. “It’s just not in my DNA. I don’t even bond with people easily let alone develop feelings. It’s why I’ve never had romantic feelings for anyone. I’m not really capable of loving many people. And when it comes to the living? The amount of people I love is a grand total of just Doctor Zaid Zidan so…” Trailing off the blonde shrugged slightly and then took a sip of her drink, cocking her head to one side in thought. “Okay, that’s a lie. A white lie I tell pretty much everyone so don’t be insulted. I may have had romantic feelings for a grand total of one person in my whole life and…he didn’t see me that way so I never said or did anything.”

Zaid was already used to Callie mention just how much inconvenience she thought she brought to his life. It was something he had to hear every time they seemed to meet and as much as he tried to make sure of correcting her or explain to her that it wasn’t a problem for him, she would just keep bringing it up. “One is not a trouble, I have told you before,” He asked for a drink for her “Two, no I am not. So here has a drink with me.”

“Well, you never know, you could get tired of me, find some hot chief you get feeling for, you never know.” He laughed “Just kidding. But Callie, you need to stop saying that about people, if you don’t want to get married that’s fine, but saying you are not wife material is too exaggerate because there are way too many people in this world, and not to lose our routine, I would be more than happy to be your fake husband, even if you don’t believe it. I would and I just had to tell you that you were wrong about that.” He smiled and drank his drink.

Callie pursed her lips in a sort of dramatic pout- which was pretty par for the course with her and leaned herself against him. It had little to do with the fake relationship and everything to do with their dynamic. For as unaffectionate as she could be with people? That had never been the case with Zaid. If anyone back home could see her with him they would marvel at the idea of her being the same person. The day Calypso Pallas hugged anyone that wasn’t her brothers? Well, surely that would mean the world was coming to an end. “I’m sorry, did you forget who you’re talking to? Me? Get tired of you, Zaid? Like that’s even possible. How could I possibly tire of my favorite person in the galaxy?” Despite the normal teasing edge to her voice as she spoke the blonde was being completely serious- and she knew he was aware of that. She was always letting him know he was her favorite person.

“You know you don’t have to say nice things about me just because you’re my best friend, right?” Taking the drink he had gotten she tapped her fingers against the glass, nudging him slightly with her elbow to reinforce her words. “And while I’m sure you’d be as amazing of a fake husband as you are a fake boyfriend? I do think that would lead to a rather interesting fake divorce one day when my bestie falls in love and wants to get married for real. “ Angling herself out slightly so she could crane her neck and glance up at him Callie offered him a slight smile. “And there will be no, what did you say? Hot chiefs? You know damn well you’re the only one in the galaxy who can put up with me.”

Zaid chuckled “Okay okay, so then I’ll pretend nameless guy doesn’t exist and you do know it not as hard as you think and I always focus on you, you say that like I don’t already do it without you having to come to ask me too scared away unwanted male companions.” He figures the best way to pretend the way they always did was kiss her on her cheek but that the person behind them could be tricked into a kiss closer to her lips than to her actual cheek.

“Everything I do, I always try to do it too well, as you say, even this” He smirked and looked as a man was slowly walking away “Not sure if it was the guy or not but someone just walked away.” He chuckled “Well as long as you stop making me scared away men after we are married I think we are good, cause I don’t want to be known as the guy his fake wife cheats on”

“You only focus on me all the time because I’m so much trouble for you,” Callie countered, her shoulders shrugging slightly even as she glanced over his shoulder to see if their unwanted visitor was around. It was a quick glance before her attention fell back onto Zaid, eyebrows raised slightly. “And I feel like you’re already trying to get rid of me. I might be insulted, Z. Do you not love me anymore?” the blonde teased, batting her eyelashes dramatically though the corners of her lips turning up showed just how little seriousness there was in the question. She knew Zaid loved her just like she loved him. There were very few people in the galaxy she had ever truly loved- and two of them were already dead.

“Hey!” Teasingly Callie pressed her fingers into the sides of his neck in almost a pinch but nowhere near hard enough to actually hurt him. “First of all, we both know that I’m not wife material, fake or otherwise. But if I ever was someone’s wife? How dare you assume I would be a cheat. Some best friend you are.” Her bottom lip jutted out dramatically though she knew that he wouldn’t believe for a moment that she was actually upset. “Besides, I’m not the kind of girl that guy’s marry so I’m afraid or crew would be even more disappointed. Not that they ever believe me when I tell them we’re not dating so I don’t know why I bother telling them anything. And for the record? Anyone cheats on my bestie and I’ll punch them in the face.” Standing on her toes the blonde pressed a purposely loud kiss to his cheek. “Don’t worry though, Zaid- I’ll make sure they all know you’re not daft enough to want me even as a fake wife. No matter how many times I have to tell them.”

Zaid didn’t have that many friends, he wasn’t really sure why, but people usually always referred to him as Doctor Zidan, he was not Z, not Zaid, for most people he was just the Doctor, all but for one sneaky bratty blond, one that she called his best friend, she had a lot of pet names for him, he was used to her always surprising him, always coming with something new. For Zaid there was no point in asking much explanations about it, he would just go with whatever new adventure she would come with.

When Callie came up his way with her big blue eyes, Zaid already knew that she would be asking him for something he was very certain of what she would ask him “Okay what he name? and Where is he?” He pulled her in for a hug and looked around.

Despite herself Callie could feel herself smiling, her arms slipping around his waist to return the hug almost instinctively. Sometimes she hated him (not really) for almost always being able to make her smile but that was just a part of their relationship. Even when she was at her worst? All Zaid had to do was smile and her smile welcome on its own. “His name doesn’t matter,” she replied, almost rolling her eyes at the silliness of him asking. “And he’s behind us. But no need to do anything except play pretend for me, Zaid.” Leaning back just enough to crane her neck up- way up- and look at him the smile stayed on her face. “I know how difficult it must be to pretend to be oh-so enamored with me that you can only focus on me, my dear, but you pretend oh so well. I don’t know what I’d do without you.” Best friend? Yes. But also the best fake boyfriend she could ever hope for in situations like that.

“Sometimes, perhaps you do it too well,” she teased, her eyes still on his face, playing the game of make believe they had played so many times before. Why he always came to her rescue? It was beyond her. She wasn’t sure that it was in the bestfriend handbook to be the fake boyfriend and human wall for your friend when they get themselves into an awkward situation. But he did it anyway. Every time. Unwrapping her arms from around his waist the blond reached up to place her hands on either side of his neck, a gesture that seemed far more intimate than she meant it in- but anyone looking on wouldn’t know that. “I think that’s why some of our little family thinks we’re not pretending,” she continued to tease, eyebrows raised in amusement. “Before you know it? They’ll be marrying us off in their imaginations. Sorry in advance they’re giving you such a terrible fake wife.””

Callie didn’t really like to talk.

Most of the people that knew her from the Themis knew that she was quiet. She was the type of person who would rather watch the people around her than speak. She would answer when spoken to, she would acknowledge when people were around. But the blonde was the type to save her words and being chatty wasn’t something people would ever accuse her of. Before her brothers had died it had been different. She had spoken more, had been gregarious and laughed often. But the death of her brothers took many things from her including that. These days the blonde was only truly chatty around Zaid.

Yet, despite that reality Callie wasn’t exactly the type to avoid people. She didn’t hide in her room and pretend that people didn’t exist. It wasn’t as though she hated people, after all. She just saw no need for wasted words. Her Themis family could get her to talk rather easily- even if she kept many of her thoughts to herself or kept her responses on the shorter side. As for the crew they had been forced to live with? Well, she couldn’t say she had spoken to them since boarding. There had been no need.

Sitting in the lounge the blonde tucked one of her legs up towards her chest. The days felt longer on Virtus than they had on Themis somehow. Or perhaps it was the uncertainty of their fate that made them feel longer. She couldn’t be sure. It only felt as though they had been on that tense ship for a year already rather than a few months. The blonde was considering the strangeness of that when someone else entering the lounge caught her attention in her peripheral vision. Without a word- unsurprisingly- she turned her gaze towards the newcomer. Quiet or not? She couldn’t deny she was curious when it came to other people.

How To Fake A Relationship || Flashback

Callie Pallas could be an absolute mess. It was no surprise to anyone who knew her well- though most people never got close enough to. But the very few who did know her that she tended to be a little chaotic. For as quiet and stoic as she could be? When it came to her personal life she was always beyond messy. And that was because personal connections were something she as terrible at. Ever since her brothers had died she had found it impossible to get close to other people. In that moment her parents had all but forgotten about their third and youngest child, too wrapped up in the grief that came over them upon hearing that both of their sons had died. And in some ways she didn’t blame them- who wouldn’t be devastated to lose one child let alone two? But with their disconnect the only real relationships Callie had were officially over.

Since then she had made it a point not to get close to many people. They couldn’t leave her; they couldn’t abandon her; she wouldn’t have to grieve their deaths. It was a strange position to be in even while she had found a new family among her crew. Because even while she cared for them, was protective of them and considered them more family than her parents were anymore. Yet she couldn’t really say that she was close to any of them (save for one- but Zaid was the exception rather than the norm).

That didn’t mean that Callie didn’t crave closeness, however. Of course she did. How could she not? All humans want a connection of some kind but she wouldn’t let herself have any other personal connections. Having one person in her orbit close enough that losing him would devastate her was more than enough, more than she had ever intended. The only connection that she let herself have when it came to people was physically. And it worked- until it didn’t. Until people got too close or wanted too much from her. Then it was a matter of playing a great game of avoidance. It happened far too often- they would return to a place and she’d run into someone that she had been with prior and wanted to avoid.

This was one of those times. And as usual she knew how to handle it best- or the easiest way, at least.

Ducking around people in the bar then had stopped at the blonde made her way towards her best friend. He was easy to spot in a crowd- he stood taller than most others did- and even easier to get to as she slipped past everyone else. Almost in a dash Callie made her way over to Zaid and slipped herself in front of him, her much smaller frame almost completely hidden by him. “I need your help.” She turned her blue eyes up towards his face, knowing that she wouldn’t have to explain further. This sort of thing happened quite often. But really, he made the perfect fake boyfriend to keep other people away. Could he blame her for going to him every time? @doctor-zidan​
