"Good to see you again, Miss Mezdor. Please, join me and have a drink," the Canadian pack alpha said, his voice joyous. He pushed the second whiskey-and-ginger-ale towards me.
"What do you want, Page?"
"You can't have me. I'm not yours," I shot back. My hands gripped into fists tightly.
He grinned again, looking devious. "Let me rephrase. I want your DNA... It wouldn't take much, and I promise I'll try not to leave you with as many scars as the late Queen Alpha. God rest her soul."
My heart leapt into my throat the same instant my stomach found the floor. The old visions swam through my head again of monstrous hybrids, of the medical lab, of blood splattering on the floor...
"You want what she did," I accused, my voice softer than I had expected it to be.
He tipped his head to the side as he lifted his glass off the bar counter. "I want a pure-blooded Alpha on the throne who isn't sharing a bed with our enemies," he said calmly before taking a drink. "And my friends here want all the Mezdors dead and gone, their ashes wiped off the face of this earth... But, of course, I made them promise to leave you alive a little longer while my researchers finish their project."
"If you think I'll play along with your game—"
"Oh, you'll play, Miss Mezdor," Page cut me off. "Because if you don't, I'll have no choice but to remove the King Alpha's head now rather than later. And I think we both know even your vampiric immortality won't keep him alive when his brain has been severed from his body. I have a man already within the walls of the French chateau. He's prepared to make his move the moment I give him the signal... Actually, I believe I have evidence of that."
He pulled his phone out of his pocket and flipped through something on the screen with his thumb. "Ah, here it is," he said after a few deafening moments of silence. He held up the cell phone and showed it to me. The picture was of a man holding the phone to face him, the majority of the shot over his shoulder. It only took one glance to see the man behind him, his back turned as he bent over the desk in the Alpha den, Maria at his side as they surveyed some document. I knew it was Jason.
I felt the blood drain from my face and my breath catch in my throat. Panic spread through me like a rapid disease.

I opened my mouth, feeling saliva fill around my tongue and I sunk my fangs in. His pulse hammered against my teeth and tongue and I bit down. Doctor Nelson screamed, trying to shove me off of him to get away. I could taste his fear and I reveled in it. Hot, thick blood massaged my throat as it slid down and I took it into me, my eyes closing. I had been denied feeding for too long and I swallowed another mouthful. Being raised in an influential family of vampires should have given her a comfortable lifestyle... Until she discovered her ability to turn into a wolf.
