alsooooooo (saying this as someone who collects VHS), if you're really into a more analog VHS aesthetic, many people make custom VHS tapes of new releases, if you know where to look. most of them are not officially licensed prints, but some are. here are some folks who make custom VHS that you should check out:
certain studios like a24, neon, warner brothers, and fox searchlight are also occasionally doing (licensed) VHS releases of their films nowadays. a24 usually posts these listings through their official store, whereas neon, warner brothers, and fox searchlight will usually commission one of the more renowned customs makers (such as the ones above) to do a limited print for them. keep an eye out for those as well!
if you're interested in collecting playable VHS and unsure where to start, look into getting either a refurbished VCR or one that has been proven to work (be very careful with this, especially if you don't know much about retro tech, because a faulty VCR can eat/destroy an irreplaceable tape; if you don't know much, i recommend seeking out a refurbished VCR for your first setup). you can also acquire an old CRT from ebay, some speakers to connect to it all, and you should be good to go.
be sure to always check your tapes for mold BEFORE even thinking about sticking them into your VCR. mold looks like white spots (varying in size, depending on severity) on the actual tape part of your VHS tape. ALWAYS inspect your tapes for mold, especially if they are older. putting a moldy tape into your VCR will most likely spread the mold to your VCR itself, which will then spread it to every tape you put into the VCR after. mold can take down your whole collection, so be wary. never store your tapes in high humidity. VCRs and tapes can POSSIBLY be brought back from mold, but it is a very difficult and expensive process and only a handful of people in the community have/sell the equipment necessary to even safely attempt it.
