I hadn't write Swercy fluff in a while and we all deserve some. So here's Mercy making Swan a mixtape.
You can read it under the cut or on ao3
âWhatcha doing there?âÂ
Swanâs voice made Mercy jump to her feet from her sitting position on the bed. She had been so focused on the music that was coming out of the cassette player she borrowed from Cowgirl that she never heard Swan coming in.Â
âMe? Nothing. Just enjoying some music. Werenât you supposed to get home later today?â Mercy answered quickly as she tried to hide the cassette player behind her back as naturally as possible.Â
The truth was Mercy was trying to make a mixtape for her girlfriend. Most of her free days lately, when Swan wasnât around, were spent listening to the radio in hope they would play the songs she needed and that night she had finally caught the last song she wanted. But of course Swan had come home earlier than expected and almost blew the surprise. So now Mercy had to find a way to stop her recording without Swan noticing before her plan fell apart.
Swan frowned slightly âYou seem on edge. Is everything okay?â Mercy almost melted at the worried look Swan gave her. She never really had people concerned about her wellbeing before she met the warchief and as much as she hated making her worry, it did feel nice to be cared about.Â
Mercy approached her girlfriend with a smile and gave her a quick peck on the lips âItâs fine baby, I was just lost in my thoughts, didnât hear you coming in.â Swan didnât seem convinced but didnât ask more questions, trusting Mercy would have mentioned something if there really was a problem. Instead she only responded with a small hum of agreement and took off her vest for the night.Â
The newest addition to the warriors shuffled from foot to foot thinking of how she could get Swan out of the room as quickly as possible. Noticing the unnatural silence taking place between them, Mercy decided to question her lover as she would usually do. âHowâd the day go?â
âLike every other day Cleon and I have a meeting with the Riffs, boring.â Swan sighed, massaging her head with one hand while Mercy nodded, half listening, her mind racing to find a solution to her problem. Swan continued âI know weâre associated with them now and Cleon seems to trust them a lot, but I never feel that comfortable surrounded by another gang. Even if we just sit around and talk about future projects for a few hours.âÂ
Mercy focused back on Swan, rubbing the arm of the warchief in a comforting way âI donât like the idea of the two of you alone and unarmed with them either, but Cleon is usually a good judge of character isnât she?âÂ
âWell she did let Ajax join the gang so Iâm not so sure about that.â Swan snorted before she wrapped an arm around Mercy bringing her closer and looked into her eyes. âBut I do trust her, like she trusted my judgment with you.âÂ
Swan properly kissed her just as the song currently playing finished. Mercy sadly withdrew from the embrace feeling like an asshole when Swan watched her do so with sad puppy eyes. She told herself she had to for Swanâs surprise gift and with new found resolve, she lightly pushed Swan out of their room. The warchief stared at her more confused than ever. Did she do something wrong? Mercy had never forced her to leave the room, especially not when she had just come back from a long day. Usually Mercy would be all over her, almost overwhelming her with questions and touches. The whole situation seemed fishy.
âAre you sure you-â Swan started asking before being interrupted by Mercy.Â
âYes Iâm sure Iâm fine, I just need toâŠâ Mercy hadnât thought that far ahead. She had to find something quick before all the space on the cassette got filled with random radio bullshit. âGet changed. I need to get changed, cause weâre going out tonight, remember?â
Swan frowned, completely lost. She had no memories of making plans for tonight especially considering she wasnât even supposed to be home yet. Mercy knew her plan wasnât working, but she was in too deep to stop now.
âI have to get changed and you have to take a shower. Quick, we donât want to make the other wait on us do we now.â With that, and before Swan could raise any objection, Mercy closed the bedroom door leaving a very puzzled Swan with her mouth agape alone in the hallway.Â
Mercy ran to the cassette player as fast as she could and stopped the recording. She took the cassette out and prayed it didnât get too much other thing after the song because she had no clue how to fix it. She hid the gift in a small space between the bed and the wall and looked for some clothes to go out. A moment later, she heard the shower running and let out a sigh of relief. Swan had decided to not question her weirdness and to just go with it, which meant Mercy would not have to explain herself any further, at least for now. She just hoped some of the other warriors were free and ready to follow her lead without questions.
As Swan finished her shower, Mercy was already in the bathroom painting her face with makeup. Wrapped in her towel, Swan hugged her girlfriend from behind and pressed a kiss on her back before replacing her lips with her cheek. Mercy put one of her hands on Swanâs arm while applying her lipstick with the other.Â
âDo we really have to go? Iâm sure no one will notice weâre not there.â Swan pleaded with a small voice she only ever used when no one but Mercy was around.Â
Mercy giggled as she knew very well no one would be there to notice anything. Swan had just given her the best exit for the situation, she just had to play her cards right so it wouldnât be too obvious that she didnât have anything planned. Luckily, she knew exactly how to play her girlfriend.
âSwan, Iâm almost ready and you want me to take everything off already?â Mercy teased, knowing full well what Swan's answer would be.
âIf thatâs an option, the answer is yes, I would like for you to take everything offâ Swan blushed a little, still not completely used to being this honest about what she wanted. As confident as she tried to look in her day to day life, she always had a hard time with vulnerability. That was something Mercy helped her a lot with just by listening to her and encouraging her to speak about her emotions, not that Swan would ever let herself be that exposed with anyone else.
Mercy made a popping sound with her lips, making sure her lipstick was perfectly placed before turning around in Swanâs arms with a grin. âWell asked that nicely, how could I say no?â She lifted her girlfriend's chin and kissed her passionately before taking her hand and dragging her to their bedroom.Â
The next morning, Mercy woke up at the crack of dawn. Swan was sleeping with her face squished on her pillow, an arm draped on the other woman. Mercy gazed at her lover for an instant, still wondering how she managed to be this lucky, before dragging herself out of bed. She made her way to her hiding spot as silently as possible, only stopping to listen for Swanâs soft snores whenever the floor cracked too loud.Â
Once her gift was retrieved, she took the time to put on some clothes and made her way to the kitchen. She had asked Rembrandt a few days ago to make her a custom cassette case so her gift wouldnât be in a simple transparent case. She found a piece of paper and a pen and started writing the name of the songs and artists that were on the mixtape. After she had listed everything, she wrote down a small message for her girlfriend. Her gift finally ready, she packed everything in the custom case and went back to her room to find a half-sleeping Swan.
âHello gorgeousâ Mercy greeted from the door when Swan turned to face her.Â
âMorninâ Swan responded in a raspy voice. She had insane bed hair and her eyes were still getting used to the light coming in the room. Mercyâs heart still skipped a beat.Â
The warchief slowly woke up, stretching her arms above her head. As her vision became clearer, she noticed her girlfriend was holding something behind her back. âWhat you hiding?âÂ
Mercy smiled and sat down on the bed next to her lover. âA gift. For youâÂ
Swan looked at her with a raised eyebrow âIn what honor?âÂ
âDo I need a reason to give my girlfriend a gift?â
Swan thought about it for approximately two seconds âNo youâre right. So can I have it?âÂ
âClose your eyes and hold up one handâ Swan did as she was told and Mercy put down the cassette in her palm. âAlright you can open them nowâ
Swan opened her eyes and stared at the tape. One side of the case was painted with a beautiful swan at the center and flowers all around it. The other side was simpler, covered with a mix of red and purple, Swan and Mercy favorite colors respectively, and the inscription âM+Sâ in a heart at the bottom right. When she opened it, there was the note Mercy wrote that same morning:
Coney Island Baby - The Excellents
We Belong Together - Ritchie ValensÂ
More Than A Woman - Bee GeesÂ
Canât Take My Eyes Off Of You - Frankie ValliÂ
My Girl - The TemptationsÂ
Earth Angel - The PenguinsÂ
What A Wonderful World - Sam CookeÂ
Time After Time - Cyndi LauperÂ
Swan looked up at her girlfriend with teary eyes.
For you my love, so you can always remember how you make me feel.
-Mercy
âYou donât have to keep it if-âÂ
âI love you so much.âÂ
Mercy took a moment to just gaze at the love of her life. âI love you too Swan. Now and forever.â She barely had time to finish her sentence before Swan tackled her on the bed, covering her with kisses as Mercy laughed.
Mercy doesn't know where her verse should go in the cypher. Your typical shenanigans ensue.

"Hey, I gotta question."
"Yeah?"
The two women stood in the kitchen, the shorter wiping down tables with the taller washing dishes, maybe only mildly tuned into the conversation until then.
"I'd overheard Cleon calling it a cypher but like... is the rap you guys do, actually like, a..." She trailed off for a second. "cypher?"
"Mercy, why are you asking me stupid questions?" Cochise deadpanned.
"It's not stupid!"
"Sounds stupid." Smirking, she walked over to the sink, wringing the water out of the cloth.
"I just mean, is it weird for me to workshop my verse? Should I even..." hesitating before continuing, "be thinking of a verse?"
Cochise paused for a moment, as the tone in the room shifted. She couldn't doubt she knew exactly what Mercy meant by that. She wanted to consider her response carefully, but before she could even respond the question was answered before her.
"Well you can't not have one, that's just stupid." Ajax said, as Rembrandt and her walked in, sitting at the kitchen table.
"Sure.." Mercy trailed, entertaining the thought of pure silence after Swan's verse. The thought would've made her laugh if she had more time to think about it.
"Where would it go, though?" Swan entered, leaning with her back on the counter, her arms supporting her next to Cochise.
The question hangs in the air for a minute, everyone knowing what they want to say, but nobody being brave enough to say it.
Maybe Fox would've said it.
"We could put it at the end." Rembrandt suggests.
"Uh, Would Fox's part just be silence?" Mercy asks hesitantly.
"Yeah, like a little moment of silence, it could be cute."
"It would be weird." Cleon says, as her and Cowgirl walk in, leaving their vests on the wooden coat rack, as Cowgirl flops onto the chair beside Ajax.
"No it wouldn't, we just gotta do it right!"
"There is no doing it right, it's just gonna be weird, trust me." Cleon smiled with her mouth, though her eyes told a different story, as she leaned on one foot and crossed her arms.
"No look, I'll show you, I'll show you, somebody start, go go." Rembrandt encouraged, as Cleon just raised an eyebrow.
The room is silent for a second, before Cowgirl begins to use the counter to make a beat, as Cochise chants.
"Warriors, show em what you got!" Everyone joins, as Mercy begins to beatbox after.
"I'm Cochise, oh please, you know my style. I'm always ready with the verses and I'm versatile."
"Turnstile, here's a token, gotta get inside. They call me Cowgirl cause I like to ride."
The room is silent for a beat, and everyone just stares at each other for a bit.
Mercy continues beatboxing.
"Sucka's kick rocks, cause we number one- Yeah, that sucked." Cleon says plainly, as Cowgirl stops hitting the counter.
"And somebody was beatboxing." Ajax added, turning to Rembrandt with a smirk.
"I could replace her?" Mercy said quietly, partially hoping nobody would hear her.
She'd been with the warriors for a while, and through a while at that. She stayed when Swan expected her to leave, she'd stayed until Ajax got out of jail, she'd stayed until Rembrandt was Rembrandt again, and she'd stay as long as they'd have her. But the voice in the back of her mind telling her she'd never amount to who they'd lost would never silence itself. No matter how hard she tried, or how hard they'd tried.
At eyeing around the room, seeing all eyes on her, she very quickly realized she was in fact heard, and they were waiting for her to continue. Not judging, just waiting. She wasn't all that used to non-kneejerk reactions, but she went on.
"I mean, not literally cause of course I'll never be her, and I totally get that but I just mean-"
"Mercy." Ajax cut her off.
"Huh?"
"We get it, move on."
"Oh yeah, uh, what if I just go after Cowgirl? That should make it easy, right?"
"I mean, I guess, but you still need a verse, and you'd have to rap a certain way so it still fits" Rembrandt began, before Mercy interrupted, "Yeah, I got that."
"Wait, you got that?! So why did you ask me if you needed to make a verse earlier?" Cochise asked, a tinge of offense in her voice.
"Well, a cypher isn't supposed to be planned, I figured I had to think it up on the spot."
"We use terms loosely." Cleon smiled at her, turning to Cowgirl and nodding.
And Cowgirl looked at Ajax.
And Ajax looked at Rembrandt.
And Rembrandt looked at Mercy.
Who looked at Cochise.
Who looked at Swan, who glanced at Mercy for a millisecond before looking at Cleon.
