Jackie
Yesterday I had my talk through about the assignment brief, and then got together with the Droog group for the first time. We had a look at each other's designs, and discussed ideas with Fiona and the design assistant.
When looking at my kilt, I had found pictures of kilts that had coloured inserts in the pleats, and brought that forward as an idea to bring a pop of colour to the costume. Fiona and the Droog group thought it was a good idea, and I shall try to make samples over the weekend to show them again on Monday/Tuesday.
Later in the day we as a group decided that we'd discuss the colour red together, as red is in all our costumes. Fiona had said she wanted the red to be different hues, hence why we are going to look at red together (to ensure we get the same type of red).
The rest of the group also proposed the idea of having the coloured pleats only on one side of the kilt, as their designs all had asymmetric colouring on it. I brought the idea to Fiona and she liked the idea. I will add this to the samples to try make over the weekend so we can see how it works.
So today me and the rest of the Police group had a meeting where we discussed how we could go about making the police uniforms. The meeting was fantastic and I feel like we’ve really progressed and that now we have a good firm grasp on how we will go about making our costumes.Â
We each brought some fabric samples and we all fell in love with one of the samples from a company called Heathcoat Fabrics which we decided would be fantastic to use in place of traditional fabric manipulation for one of the panels on the chest. Using the fabric like this means that all of our costumes will look much more uniform than if we each tried a fabric manipulation each.Â
We also established that most of our costume will be made out of scuba material. This stuff stretches, is extremely durable, and it doesn't fray! its also really thick and wont crinkle up when the actors move about on stage, this means that the costume will always look nice and flat/firm.
All in all today was a huge success for us and I feel happy moving on to the next stage of making which is the toile.  R
Jackie I am working on A Clockwork Orange, and have been given the design for the character Dim, who is one of Alex's Droogs. This design (drawn by Fiona Chivers) has the following components (I have also said whether I'll be making the piece, or whether it would be sourced): -Kilt (making) -Bomber Jacket (sourcing, but embroidering on top) -T shirt (sourcing) -Hat/Balaclava (sourcing/may not be included) -Boots (sourcing) The big make I have is the kilt, which will be made of a heavy black material.
Clockwork orange: police
So I've been put in the group who are responsible for the making of the costumes which the police will wear. The costume design strongly resembles fencing gear with occasional streaks of what will be fluorescent material. The trousers will be made out of stretch material to allow sufficient movement on stage. Based on my personal experience I would say that the best way to do the fencing armour would be to make them like a quilted gambeson. R
This is the period styled shirt Rob has made for his costume #costumeproduction #costumedesign #shirt #dyed
A close up of the moiré fabric I'm using (edited so you can see the pattern) The pattern is strong in the light, I just couldn't get a good enough picture of it #moiré #fabric #costumeproduction
Got to cut out my jacket fabric which is moiré, hopefully it goes well.... #costumeproduction #coatumemaking #moiré #fabric #cuttingout
Picture of the period style shirt I'm making for my costume Made of Muslin, and almost every seam is a French Seam đŸ˜ it hurt working them all out But in return I got to put really pretty lace on the sleeves! #costumedesign #costumeproduction #periodstyleshirt #lace
