Not the greatest photos ever taken but hey, this is a snapshot of my Aussie Day weekend. I grew up on a small farm on what was once called the “salad bowl” of #Queensland the @redlandcity Redland shire .. Aged 6 or so I got to drive what was to me a MASSIVE tractor, called a Howard 2000 ... you can see the size of the tiny orange tractor (and yer I did crop off his head such was the excitement) around a small paddock for hours and hours and hours on end. My work ethic comes from those days as a child. The market snap is from the @allora Vintage show at where else but #Allora Qld. I saw so many memories of tools that were my pride and joy as a young boy sub 10 years of age. A saw set. A hand powered drill. A mortise and tenon saw. A “self drive” slasher. Milk crates with glass bottles ... and so many more. Did you know that there is a #Darlingdownszoo ? With Lions and giraffes and other stuff? Well she is in her early days and I am sure that from the dedication of the staff that’s she will go on in time to be just amazing. The breeding programs to save endangered species is super human. Warwick locals were keen to tell me that the crew at @Australiazoo were none to keen for the new zoo and well, causes a bit of trouble. The shot of the pub is the Pink Pub at Clifton ... ummm 40k of so from #warwick - there are 3 pubs in the town ... a haberdashery / newsagent and ummm ahhh not much else ... but I do so love country people ... and the beer! #HappyAustraliaDay my fellow Aussies.... we can get back to our differences and indifferences tomorrow but today ... Departure Day Today we would have usually done the boat cruise and then boarded a bus for the ride back to Queenstown. The weather didn’t get the memo. The night before it had poured and caused an avalanche that blocked the only road out. This is apparently a regular event. The usual plan is to fly us to the other side of the blockage and bus from there. The weather however didn’t want to play. As it was blowing upwards of 60 knots, the helicopters were grounded. The boat cruise was spectacular but not in the same sense as the Milford Track. Not disappointing but not on par. It was getting dark as the first of Group 6 arrived at the Lodge, some hyperthermic as they had walked the last 25k in this atrocious weather. The next morning we waited to hear if the road was clear until 10am. It was. Before this though I took a walk to the foreshore and got a few shots. The end of the Milford Track for me. Although we are unable to get out of Milford Sound by road this day, the usual Sound Cruise is still on. . Curiously the Sound is not a Sound at all but a Fjord. Bla bla ...This trip was to be interesting to see the view from the water BUT I found it a bit of a disappointment after the beauty of the Hike. It was still stunning. . . . Quintin Lodge to Sandfly Point Today was a casual stroll down hill on a largely groomed track for 25k. As usual there was a briefing the night before that warned of rain. This was to be the first time we had any rain at all. We were lucky to say the least. It had poured before we started 3 days prior and this filled the waterways. Clear sunny skies for the most part caressed our faces with happiness. Ohhhh that was kinda poetic? 7.30am after breakfast we headed off. I went first-ish with my desire for a clear silent track. Today was more of the same ( I sound bored but not ) with stunning views up each side of the valley. Water. More water. Moss and more moss. Lake. Waterfall. Avalanche. Just the usual. 20k or so into the wander was the main lunch stop. It was largely open air and featured light rain and sandflies, stories of others escapades and mud. Those desperate enough visited the long drops. I was warned of the ammonia stench so I “sucked it up” LOL and avoided that pleasure. I remember munching on my curried egg sanga, standing and moving to avoid being a landing pad for the midges and staring at the creek. WOW ... 5k to go. I can do this. After the prior 2 days, I started out a bit sore and adding 20k on top had taken it’s toll. I wandered for 2k kinda dreamin. Doing my best to suck up the noisy silence..... I was really tired now and really had to regroup .... Somehow I put the peddle down and with the aid of my upper body pushed my poles hard. I literally got into the zone and powered home. No thoughts of not making it, no thoughts of slowing. This is my walk. This is my victory. Come on boy. It is amazing what energy you have left when you dig in. What a bloody hero. Actually this is how it was. Sutherland Falls Sutherland falls is a 45 minute walk from Quintin Lodge along a well maintained and relatively smooth track. Be warned that after the walk over MacKinnon Pass you will be tired so allow yourself the mental freedom to deal with the uphill steps on the out-bound stretch. The falls is New Zealand’s tallest waterfall made up of 3 sections and totalling 580 metres. Think of it like a 200 storey building. 0.6 of a kilometre. The fall is feed by Lake Quill atop the mountain. As you approach this colossal natural beauty the enormity starts to overwhelm your senses. There is a sign 580m from the fall that you must walk past, oddly 580 metres to stress just how high this monster is. I had hoped to get some photos but I decided to leave my camera 100 metres or so, wrapped in a shirt, as I was already soaked from the spray. The noise. The sheer volume of water smashing down. On top of this my drench clothes were now making me cold. Freezing in fact. So what does an Aussie boy do? He walks closer and then finds a way to cross the stream to get to the rock face. Brain freeze set in several times. In for a penny thought I. Standing behind the falls was very exciting. The freezing cold soon turned to warm excited as my body adjusted. The noise !!!!! Full of jubilation I wandered back to Quintin Lodge for a warm muffin and coffee. Oh I suffered! An hour or so later Scotty arrived and the cheering happened. Pompolona Lodge to Quintin Lodge and up and over Mackinnon Pass. Part 2. A brief rest to eat our self pre-prepared lunch of sandwiches and a few biscuits and I was keen to head out. One of the group had already gone so I left her to get ahead and she was soon out of sight. 900 metres of descent. I was “full of beans” and heading off with gusto. I had trained for this type of descent including several trips on Mt Warner. The trick is to use your poles to vault and to also break your fall. That’s the trick. The first half hour was a joy and then .... the emergency track. Milford Track is as you now know prone to avalanches so they have an emergency track that is used full time at the beginning of the season (which was a week earlier) to divert you away from the danger. The only issue is that the emergency track is more like a creek bed if the creek bed is steep slippery and vertical at times. My progress slowed. I was to hear a helicopter and soon see it lowering a new bridge into place. Why? Because it had rained the night before and washed the prior bridge away. A little further on I stopped to take a long exposure of the waterfall just below the bridge. Breathtaking. My mind wasn’t thinking about each step and it turned to Scotty. How on earth was he going to make it? The beauty was so distracting, it is everywhere so it took over my little mind. I rested for a good 20 minutes. I was very tired by now and out of food. Not out of water however as we were all drinking from the water ways. I made my way onward being careful of my footing as this was not the time to twist an ankle or knee a rock. We had been told of Sutherland Falls and that a group would be leaving at 4pm for the 90 minute round trip walk. My body was not keen but my mind was. Getting into the Quintin Lodge at about 2.30pm I dropped my pack and took my camera to the Falls. MORE STEPS what the ... anyway, the walk was worth it.
