A-Solar has launched a new phone dock called, very imaginatively the "A-Solar iOS Solar Power Dock". This device is fitted with a powerful 6000mAh battery that can be charged using the integrated solar panel. The A-Solar iOS Power Dock will charge any Apple iOS device and is fitted with a LED status indicator and test button so you can keep updated on just how much battery power is remaining in the dock
According to A-Solar "The iOS Power dock is capable of re-charging an iPhone from flat to full in around 3-4 hours, and in around 12-16 hours using the solar panel and sunlight". Something to check out if your out and about all the time.

ZBoard
You've probably heard of motorised skateboards before, however this one promises to be the simplest design yet. The ZBoard is the world's first weight-sensing electric skateboard. Simply lean forward to go then lean back to stop. It's that easy!
According to maker "You can cruise at a walking pace, or zoom all the way up to a top speed of around 17 miles per hour." This sounds very cool, it's what's called a "kick starter project", so basically you help fund the project and make it happen.

JetFlow hydration system
The JetFlow hydration widget means you can pull the dirty, moldy, bacteria-ridden hydration bladder out of your backpack and replace it with a good old-fashioned water bottle which you can keep clean using the dishwasher. The JetFlow system allows a water bottle to function like a hydration bladder. The simple nozzle screws to the top of your water bottle, holds it upside down and delivers water through tubing. You get the same function of a hydration bladder, only with a water bottle. Now, that's a camping gadget!

Eton Raptor Review - Can they really squeeze all that in?
Next time you go camping imagine taking a radio, mobile phone charger, weather station, torch, bottle opener, compass, altimeter, alarm clock and solar charger. That's a fair bit of gear. Now, imagine all that "stuff" was packed into one camping gadget! oh yea, enter the Eton Raptor.
I've been playing with the Raptor over the last couple of weeks and here's what i've found…..
Keeping your devices at the ready
Like it or not but we are in the age "take your phone everywhere". Camping is no exception. I think one of the Raptors best features is the ability to recharge an iPad or iPhone.
The Raptor has an 1800 mAh, 3.7 Volt DC, rechargeable lithium-ion battery. So, what this means to you and I is that it will fully recharge an almost dead iPhone.
You can either recharge the Raptor fully (at home) via the USB port on your computer which takes about 4 hours, or let it sit in the Sun where it requires about 18 hours.
18 hours, really…. nah
The sun did that!
I let the Raptor go completely flat and then put it on the roof for about 5 hours. When I grabbed it, it was 3/4 full or 2 out of 3 bars on the display. I then connected up my iPhone which was in the "red" zone. The raptor charged up the phone to about 40%. To me that's completely free energy, and not bad at all!
Right, so what else can it do!
How about this:
Tell you how high you are - The altimeter can be set in feet or meters and will show you the altitude information. You can setup 10 way points.
Tell you if its going to rain - The barometer can be set in mm Hg or in mbar units and tells you the pressure and temperature. The pressure reading will display as an icon indicating what sort of weather you can expect.
Stop you form getting lost - The digital compass can be set in feet or meters and displays a digital baring readout
Wake you up with the alarm
Tell you how cold you are with the thermometer
Keep you in touch with emergency information via the AM/FM/WB digital radio tuner
Help you drink beer with the integrated bottle opener
Stop you bumping into things at night with the LED torch
Tell you when you should go to bed with dual time zones!
Gezz…. theres a lot going on there.
It's user friendly….. well, not really
I did find the button combinations and functions very confusing to use at first. The manual helps, but you'll want to spend some time playing around with it. There is a sequence to follow and if you don't things get confusing. When you get it, it makes sense, however in the days of iPhone and touch screens some more work could have gone into the interface.
Sturdy and robust
The Raptor is extremely sturdy it doesn't feel cheap or flimsy. However I found the torch and bottle opener combination a hit when I put my main torch down somewhere and forgot where it was.
What I like: Ability to charge electronic devices with solar power
What I don't like: Bad user interface
Overall: The Raptor is stuffed with survival tech, making it an essential gadget for trips into the back country, or even just a camp out in the yard.

This handy little device is basically a adapter mount. The Glif lets you mount your iPhone onto a tripod for better photos and movies or use a gorilla grip style tripod to put your phone into weird and interesting angles. Made from recycled rubberised plastic it won't mark or damage the iPhone.

Camelbak All Clear UV Water Bottle
The All Clear water bottle from Camelbak has a UV light in the cap that purifies water in 60 seconds. Simply fill the bottle from a river or tap pop on the cap and turn on the UV light. Swiss Protection Socks from Swiss Barefoot are basically big, chunky socks that are designed to be worn instead of shoes. They are made up of Kevlar, polyester, cotton and spandex. They look cool although I don't know how you would go hiking in them.

Folding skis
MTN Approach have designed a ski that folds into a backpack to help snowboarders ascend the mountain and cover the long flat trails. The skis are designed to be folded up and packed into a backpack so you can snowboard down the hill. Personally i'd perfer get the chair lift but that just me :-p

Anon ski goggles use magnetic lenses for easy swapping
When you're good enough to ski or board fast having the ability to changes lens to suit the days conditions radically improves your visibility. However, the problem with interchangeable lens systems is that they are difficult to change. You have to stop, pull the thing apart, get the lens in and hope it's all back together before you get going again. Not to mention all this takes away from your day.

You know I love my torches, the more powerful the better. I've got an <torch> thats 200 lumens that I think is pretty powerful, however, that's nothing compared to 15,000.

According to gizmag: "The growth of backcountry and sidecountry skiing and snowboarding has been a major story over the past several years. The SnowSports Industry of America reports that sales of alpine touring and random ski gear were up by 90 percent last year. Backcountry equipment like wide skis and splitboards have become a increasingly significant and a visible part of the market."
The North Face Powder Guide ABS vest integrates a nitrogen-based airbag system from German manufacturer ABS. When deployed by the rider, two brightly coloured bags pop out from the back of the vest and increase the victim's surface area so that he'll float on top of the moving snow, rather than sink to the bottom where he could become trapped and suffocate.

Pocket Chain Saw Review - I Was Sceptical Until…..
I'd like to start this review with a true story.
I decided one Friday evening to head down to Mt Disappointment (a camping area in Victoria, Australia). I pre packed the car, slaved away at work, then took off from the city at about 5p.
We entered the forest area and got about 20mins down the track towards our favourite camping area. As we rounded a bend I skidded to a sudden stop. A big tree had fallen completely across the track in one of the most inconvenient places. What's worse is that it had fallen only a few km's short of our destination camp site.
Usually, this wouldn't be too much of a problem, I'd fire up the chainsaw, have the track cleared in 10mins and be on my way, both having done a service to other drivers and crowned myself a bit of a hero. Only this time I forgot to pack the chainsaw, the tree was to big to move by hand so I couldn't clear the track, no hero status for me then…..
The only alternative was to back up a long thin track, find a place to turn around and go in another (more lengthy) way, which ended up taking an additional 2 hrs. Painful.
There is a way I could have cut and moved that tree without a petrol chain saw, or axe or drag chain. In fact I could have cut and moved it off the track with something that fits in the glove box…
Enter the Pocket Chain Saw
I'll admit when I first heard about the pocket ChainSaw I was a sceptical. How could something that fits in a pocket (or glovebox) possibly cut down a tree. Turns out it can, and depending on the size of the tree it can do it quite quickly.
Fits in your glove box
There are three primary parts to the pocket chainsaw, the two handles and the chain. The chain packs into a metal tin thats fits in the palm of your hand. The handles don't pack into the tin however they are lightweight and easy to store. The whole lot fits easily into a car glovebox or door storage pocket. It's almost a no brainer to keep with your camping kit or vehicle for emergencies.
Construction
The Pocket ChainSaw is made of high strength, heat-treated steel and is coated for rust resistance. It's over 70cm long when uncoiled and uses 124 bi-directional teeth.
Cutting Power
The whole lot assembles very quickly and easily and is ready for cutting in about 20 seconds. The manufacturer claims it "Cuts 90mm diameter branch in less than 10 seconds", and it does! It easily cuts firewood, clears a trail, trims branches, clears heavy brush, removes tree roots, cuts in corners and can even cut under fences. I can see why it's a popular part of the SAS field equipment.
There are limits
Of course there are limits. It requires a bit of human effort and you wouldn't want to try cutting down an entire forest with the thing. For emergencies and clearing fallen trees it's perfect, for every day use I'd consider a petrol saw! I'd say anything tree beyond 20cm is pushing it, it could be done but your arms would probably give out first.
I keep mine in my camping kit bag which joins me on all my adventures. I think it's a great tool to have around. If I ever encounter a fallen tree again i'm totally prepared!

The recon googles show data in a small heads up style LCD inside the googles. You can see things like slope, altitude, GPS and heaps more. However, the people at Recon obviously don't think that's enough. They have teamed up with Contour who make sports cameras and integrated a camera into the googles. How awesome!

Some times you just see a simple thing and think, "why didn't I think of that", I think the SlatGrill is one such thing. Carrying a massive full metal grill around is impractical for most campers without a trailer or heaps of space. However, having a grilled chop or steak is one of campings simple pleasures. Petzl Nao Self Adjusting LED Head Torch
I'm a torch addict, I love the things. I've got a Princeton Apex Extreme which is a super powerful 200 lumen torch with low power setting however it looks like Petzl has gone one better! The Petzl Nao is designed to adjust its beam depending on where your looking. The torch can automatically adjust the light required based on the situation. Whether you are looking straight ahead or looking down to read a map the torch can recognise the intensity and type of light you might require to shine from its LEDs, and will adjust it’s beam accordingly.

This is what Sierra Designs has to say about their new material…
"Despite all of the advanced synthetic materials on the market today, no material boasts a better warmth to weight ratio than down. The trouble is that down’s got a serious achilles heel. As most outdoor enthusiasts know, its thermal efficiency goes out the window when wet, which is the main reason synthetics have triumphed in professional gear. DriDown is a molecular level polymer that is applied to individual down plumes during the finishing process, which allows the feathers to stay dry seven times longer when exposed to moisture compared to the untreated variety. To do it, Nike has developed a consistent way to measure various activities. The So-called NikeFuel is the metric they came up with. The Nike+ FuelBand bracelet tracks a user’s NikeFuel via oxygen kinetics, which helps the band distinguish between intense periods of activities.

Nissan Scratch Shield iPhone case fixes its own scratches and blemishes
Last week I showed a promising new liquid iPhone case, now it looks like Nissan (of all companies) has gone one better!
Nissan has developed a type of paint for its cars that can automatically fix scratches — now the company's taking its tech off your car and onto your iPhone 4 or 4S. The new Nissan Scratch Shield is made of ABS plastic that makes up the case, is designed to be more rigid than other plastics, and a gel-style surface that promises to handle scratches better. And it heals itself? The case's paint is made of polyrotaxane, which Nissan says reacts when its structure is changed and actually morphs back into its original shape, covering over the scratch.
