“Since it is so likely that children will meet cruel enemies, let them at least have heard of brave knights and heroic courage.” - C.S. Lewis (On Stories: And Other Essays on Literature)
@ladiesofnarnia members challenge: Narnia x Wonder Woman (Susan as Diana)
The war is in her blood, they say, not like second nature but like a parasite, gnawing at the marrow of her bones until the daydreams are more fire and brimstone than castles and fairy tales. She never believed in war, but every day it knocked on the door of her kingdom, snuck into the hearts of her people, caused chaos, destruction, oceans of bloodshed in the streets. This was no place for the gentle. In fact, it was a war that brought her to Narnia, a war that brought her to the lifelong battle it caused when Narnia cast her out.
In the end, it wasn’t a war that took her siblings. It was a train, and a sharp turn, a split second of misjudgment, but it was still a war to her. It was the war between believe and remember that kept her away from it all, away from them in their last moments.
They didn’t deserve it. Not Lucy with her sunshine eyes, not Edmund with his quiet integrity, not Peter with his head held high and heart that ran deep. Not even her, no matter how much she failed them, failed herself, failed what she once knew as surely as she’d lived it.
And Susan believed that no one deserved it. One day, she would make sure of that. Because it’s not about deserve. It’s about what you believe.
The hardest part is remembering who I used to be.
