5 Dorm Room Aesthetics to Make People Say “Wow!” in 2017
Hey guys! Hope you all are doing well with your studies! If you’re anything like me, you're thinking ahead about your dorm and the new life ahead of you. Having your own dorm is a blank slate, so why would you leave it empty?! You have a fresh start from your cluttered room at home, so let’s make it count! Here are my top 5 favourite aesthetics and some links to decorations and furniture.
1. Boho Chic, this is a classic dorm room design. Very “Urban Outfitters” vibes with lots of tapestries, fairy lights and cacti. Cozy sheets are a must! Polaroid photos tacked to the walls also add life to your room.
B&W Tapestry ($)
Blue Peacock Tapestry ($)
Fairy Lights, 8 Settings, 20ft ($)
Chunky Knit Grey Blanket ($$$)
Hanging Rope Planter ($$$)
2. Pastel Retro, really beautiful design and definitely something unique that your friends won't have! Retro includes round shapes and soft colours of blue, green and pink. Light wood goes really well with these colours too and adds life! Definitely check out your local thrift stores, you never know what goodies they might have!
Red Retro Coffee Maker ($$$$$)
Retro Clock in Blue ($$$)
Retro Portable Bluetooth Speaker ($$$)
Raw Steampunk Lightbulb ($$$)
Various Coloured Shag Carpets ($$)
3. Plants x Metal, I feel like this is pretty popular in the studyblr community! Pick your favourite metal; copper, gold, silver, rose gold, etc. and pair it with light or dark green plants! Hanging planters are super cute, and also metal plant pots (bonus: use silver tin cans!). Geometric shapes like triangles and cubes pair really nicely with this look.
BEAUTIFUL Wheeling Multipurpose Planter ($$$$$)
2 Piece Hanging Metal Grids ($$$)
Geometric Wall Planters ($$)
Tabletop Geometric Terrarium ($$)
Cacti Tea Lights ($)
4. Cozy Cabin, Canadians! This is my favourite! Faux leather, imperfect wood, sweater print and red tartan are the main colour and texture palettes in this look. Although you can’t nail tree bark to the walls of your dorm, you can still make it just as rustic. Go for cozy blankets, natural candles and fairy lights. If you’re buying kitchenware like mugs and plates, check out the links below for some really nice ones!
3 Himalayan Salt Tea Light Holders ($)
Coleman Enamel Mug ($$)
Red Tartan Blanket ($$)
Forest Pine Essential Oil ($)
Rustic Wooden 3 Photo Hanging Picture Frame ($$)
5. Minimalism, probably the cheapest and more chic design out of the five. Now, minimalism is about everything being practical and having multiple uses. Stay away from clutter and decorations and only buy nice things with purpose. Stick with plain white and basic shapes. Definitely add one or two plants to this design, otherwise your room could end up looking lifeless!
Simple White Bedsheets ($$$)
Vanilla White Candle ($$)
Polaroid Photo Hanger ($$$$)
Clear Glass Kettle ($$$)
4 Piece Modern White Geometric Plant Pots ($)

Everything's felt really heavy lately so I spent lots of time recharging and calming my mind. It wasn't easy for me to "allow" taking time off because I've been putting myself under a lot of pressure. But I've learned how incredibly important it is to take your time and to recover from feeling stressed out. If you feel burnt out this is your reminder to make a break, read a book, take a walk, nap for a few hours, ... 💭🍵
Been studying for my board exam since last fall, and back then I was already dreading this weekend’s internal medicine review course… I was right to do so, because oh my god it’s so long and there’s so much to learn and how am I gonna stuff all that information in a single brain?!? 🤯
One chapter, one day at a time is what I gotta tell myself. I’m gonna make it, and so will you! 💪
22:52 — i survived the week’s hell! being able to rest unapologetically made me feel like i was awake 24/7 during the weekdays. anyway, i just realized january is about to end in less than 10 days… what the fuck?
one of my december goals is to read at least 2 books, and i wanted to make one of those forest born (but i’m currently on holiday in florida so i’m not getting any reading done). i got it from a second-hand bookstore when my family and i went to a wonderful town in PA. this book absolutely transforms me~
i read a comic called “year one” for my comic book class and it was pretty good! now i’ve gotta write my paper on it which shouldn’t be too bad.
is procrastinating homework with homework a bad decision tho?
2nd december - what is your favorite thing about winter?
i love being with family. my family is spread all across the country so it’s nice to be able to spend the time just relaxing and being with each other.
3rd december - what is your least favorite thing about winter?
hmm… it used to be getting gifts for people because i overthink it, but i’ve gotten better at it over the years. now, it’s just the fact that i’m usually in really warm climates so i don’t get the full scope of the winter vibes.
only one exam left and i’m up to my ears in analytic philosophy. it’s definitely one of the most difficult philosophy modules i’ve taken, but that makes coming to understand it all the more rewarding! wishing everyone busy with exams the best!
taking care of yourself not only through masks, cleaning and pampering but through activities you may not necessarily do often such as buying yourself flowers to brighten your living area or sitting at the beach watching the sunset

everyone is different and every program is different, but i think these tips are generally applicable! regular caveat that i'm an english lit phd, and things may be different in social sciences + stem
do not do all the reading. not only is it physically impossible unless you're an incredible speed reader, it also is actually not helpful! 80% of what you read isn't going to serve you + your research, so reading it all is gonna get in the way of that. ruthlessly prioritize
get some sleep. you are a person, and your work should never come before your health + happiness. there will always be more work to do. not getting everything done is fine!
notes and citations are your friend. when reading an article, look at the works cited and look at the foot/end notes. these will give you a better idea into what the scholarly landscape looks like more than the body of the article will. likewise, write notes on everything you read so you don't have to go back and reread things.
talk to people. it's scary, but grad school is about moving from being a student to a peer— treat your professors as people, go talk to them/ videochat/ whatever; this makes the profs 1) less scary and 2) better able to write rec letters.
courses only matter so much. for a lot of programs, coursework is the bare minimum of what you do. get a job, join a research project, work on an individual project. it will help you not be consumed with the grunt work of courses, and will make you look better in the long run.
imposter syndrome is inevitable. hate to say it, but it's true. there's lots to learn and it's gonna feel that everyone knows more than you. but it's not true, you deserve to be there, and remember that everyone else is probably feeling it too!
