Chapter 3: A Road, summary: "Daeron then watches Lyonel bring a hand to his mouth. It does not hide his smile. “Do you often not remember the lords whose son you claim to be, princeling?”

“Ah,” says Daeron.

“Ah,” mimics Lyonel with a shake of his head."

Chapter 4: A Dinner, summary: "She narrows her eyes at him in a way that she simply must have learnt from Lyonel. “Are you a knight, Daeron of House Vypern?”

A shit one, Daeron hears Egg’s voice in his mind.

“Not a very good one,” Daeron says."

Chapter 5: A Dream, summary: "It is not a carved statue of a great ruler or leader, this much Daeron instinctively knows. It is entirely instinctively that Daeron knows the figure is not a person at all. It is merely something other wearing a person-shaped skin.

Additional rambles:

Apologies for not posting links to the chapters sooner. I felt as though these three chapters are sort of a package deal, so they deserve to be talked about together.

In my mind, chapter 3 and 4 are called Daeron Meeting the Family, whereas chapter 5 is There Was (Not) Only One Bedroll. Though I will admit, this description makes it sound a whole lot more lighthearted than it truly is.

Not to say that there is no lightheartedness, but in the larger The Frog Prince narrative, these chapters are kind of the last moment of peace on neutral ground. These chapters are the journey leading up to reaching Parchments and House Penrose, for better or for worse.

James Bond and Mythical Magic

At one point, my school librarian actually told me I could not check out D'Aulaires' Book of Greek Myths (IYKYK) for at least a month so other kids could have a chance to read it. But the Hellenic Greek Pantheon was just a jumping off point. I became obsessed with mythology, folklore and religious iconography from various cultures. I ate up Arthurian legends, Old Man Coyote tales, stories of the Ennead, and was obsessed with Cihuacōātl, Kali and Hel.

So it isn't a surprise I adore AUs and Crossovers that bring a little mythical magic. While this is a type of fanfic I enjoy overall, I think it is especially interesting in the universe of James Bond, specifically Craig!Bond. Here are my top three reasons why this is my favourite Bond AU/Crossover.

First, espionage is a shadow realm. The very nature of spies means there is already an aura of the unknown, the secret, the things being more than they seems. Adding some deities, a little spell casting, portals to another world, is so intuitive and satisfying.

Second, James Bond is a Hero. But what makes Bond so interesting is that he contains multitudes. He doesn't fit neatly into the box of being a Classic or Epic hero, he isn't totally Tragic or an Everyman. He certainly has qualities of the Byronic and Anti-Hero to him. the irony, that Fleming claimed to have written a Bond as a "dull, uninteresting man to whom things happened" is hilarious, given what a complex character he actually created. Each version of movie Bond brought it's own take, and so we are left with a wealth of material to work from. Now, Bond can embody any one, or combination of, these flavours of hero.

Finally, Ben Whishaw is ethereal. I would love to do a meta study on how many articles and bios describe Ben Whishaw as "fae-like" or some similar descriptor, because just look at him!! One of my favourite parts of writing and reading fan fic is that we fans are adept at pulling in bits of lore from other roles an actor has played, and Ben gives us so much to work with. I know folks have been inspired by his Ariel from The Tempest, but I personally am OBSESSED with his performance as Jean-Baptiste Grenouille in Perfume. That was my initial inspiration for my own Fae!Q. And anyway, Q works tech magic, why not let him have some real magic to boot?

All that said, here is a very non-exhaustive list, featuring some of my favourite fics with a touch of the mythical.

The Witches of MI6 by beaubete and Venstar | G | 8.8K | An old spell made in a youthful temper, an old sea witch managing in a new era, alone and broken. Old and new clash together within MI6. Featuring Mage!Q and Witch!Bond

saw a tiktok about perfumes that smell like a graveyard, read up about funeral traditions and rites in the asoiaf universe.

consequently spent far too long thinking about where daeron would like his ashes (bc he will be cremated, he will get a funeral pyre; whatever else he is, he is a dragon first) to rest in the frog prince universe.

(not that he will die in the frog prince. but, like, he will die eventually. as will lyonel.)

my running theory is that daeron would like for his ashes to rest in storm’s end (smth, smth, so hopefully he may haunt more than just the narrative, smth, smth).

whether he gets that is a completely different discussion and would entirely depend on when specifically he dies.

rewriting chapter five of the frog prince bc It Did Not Feel Right.

i am Suffering. (i am doing this to myself.)

anyway, slight spoilers, but there is almost a there-was-only-one-bedroll scene with daeron and lyonel. i shall not elaborate.

was editing the fifth chapter of the frog prince (yes, yes, i know i only have two posted on ao3, forgive me) and accidentally went down a modern au rabbit hole.

that is to say, modern au lyonel and daeron would be smth like this:

daeron goes to the same uni as lyonel’s nephew (cousin? some distant relative who gets called cousin??? who even knows, idk) ormund. they meet when they both take the same elective.

cut to ormund and daeron out at a party, very drunk.

maybe ormund lives closer to wherever the party was held, maybe daeron loses his keys. either way, they end up at ormund’s place.

all is well, daeron passes out on the couch.

except in the morning, ormund has an early lecture, so he has to leave before daeron is even properly awake.

cut to daeron finding out that ormund lives with his uncle(????) lyonel because lyonel shows up while daeron is vomiting in the bathroom.

not quite a meet-ugly, but a near thing.

summary: "The fawn is not yet dead, Daeron somehow knows. It is only gravely injured and if Daeron could move, it might yet survive. Alas, his body does not cooperate within the dream. All he can do is watch as this fawn is butchered. All he can do is watch the stone get drenched in fresh blood.

All things considered, this is not the worst dream Daeron has ever had. Were he to make a list of his worst dreams, this might not even be mentioned.

And yet, he wakes screaming."

Or Daeron's attempt to avoid his duties at all costs turns into something far worse and far better all at once.

A few random tidbits about this AU:

The initial concept of this fic is very vaguely outlined in this post.

The name of this fic is a reference to the fairy tale of the same name. (The specific reason why Daeron might be called a frog prince even without a witch turning him into a frog will be revealed in the third chapter, I promise.)

The fic's main plot is, technically, the whole betrothal drama (as represented and slightly spoiled by the three leftmost pictures on the little moodboard I made). It will get worse before it gets better.

Daeron as an unreliable narrator is a delightful storytelling device.

the working title is ‘the frog prince’ and there will be:

daeron somewhat successfully (this is arguable) pretending to not be a prince;

the whole witch-turning-a-prince-into-a-frog and some-noble-lady-kissing-said-frog being both a children’s tale and a ballad in westeros;

that same story will also be an allegory for daeron and lyonel and i shall not elaborate (but do i even have to?);

witchcraft and folk magic, because i cannot help myself;

potentially an accidental folk marriage as a cherry on top of all of this.
