An interesting level of complexity to the whole Lucifer and Alastor dynamic that I don’t feel gets picked up enough is Lucifer’s complete lack of exposure to humanity and the human world as it exists on Earth, at any given time. Like, I’ve talked a bit about the sociological issues in Heaven and Hell (Sinners as a permanent underclass and Lucifer’s view of them, etc. etc.) and those are absolutely at play in Lucifer and Alastor’s hostile dynamic, but there are also at least two other social dynamics that are at play from Alastor’s viewpoint that have probably gone all the way over Lucifer’s head—those obviously being race and class.

With respect to class, I think Lucifer has been so insistent on cloistering himself away from the public in Hell with the very narrow exception of people like the Sins, with whom I imagine he is very close, and the very upper echelon of Hellborn nobility, that he just has absolutely no class awareness at this point on the day to day. Charlie knows—and at this point in WFLT is uncomfortable with—what it means to be the Princess of Hell walking among random human sinners or even interacting with Overlords (ostensibly the highest class status that sinners can obtain in Hell as it currently stands). But Lucifer largely just hasn’t interacted with these people, for thousands of years, on purpose, and it shows! He has pretty much zero awareness of how he comes off when he, for example, turns his nose up at interacting with any of the people in Charlie’s hotel unless they forcibly grab his attention. Because even though Lucifer is a King, a lot of the time he doesn’t really see it that way and isn’t really exercising that authority (or doesn’t think he does)—because he’s too focused on perceiving all of this as a punishment.

With respect to race, I think Lucifer could probably give you a more coherent explanation about what it means to be an imp or what it means to have been born in Envy or any number of other nuances of Hellborn sociology than what it means for a sinner to be black or white or anything else. This is an area where I think he and Charlie both probably have matching blind spots, because it simply has not come up and they have not educated themselves on the subject. And this is where—if it is intentional (I am not saying that it is or isn’t)—Lucifer doing things like immediately on sight asking if Alastor is the bellhop and putting “No Alastor’s Allowed” signs outside his bedroom door could actually be very interesting and nuanced writing of the kind of racist character that just. Doesn’t know it. The clueless variety of racist who just has no idea or awareness that the things they’re doing or comments they’re making have that connotation. Which is actually a very common type of person to meet in real life, as it happens. They just usually don’t have the relatively way better excuse of being 10,000 year old celestial beings who have rarely if ever peeked in on what’s going on with Earth.

The other thing, when you blend all of this together, is like—at bottom, Lucifer is (in part) so rude and out of line in his interactions with Alastor because his preconceived prejudices towards sinners are driving him. Ironically, Alastor ALSO shares a lot of those prejudices—he also thinks sinners are largely horrible maniacs, and he is happy that he is now in a place where he can torture them with impunity. But a lot of the things Lucifer does come off to Alastor as the same kind of classist, racist bullshit he had to deal with (and was supposed to be done dealing with, now being a demon Overlord, for fuck’s sake) as a living man. So rather than Alastor being inclined to find any common ground in their mutual distaste for (other) sinners or to cut Lucifer some slack because what he’s feeling is not dissimilar to what Alastor often feels, Alastor absolutely hates him and his behavior while at the same time being unwilling to label it as classist or racist directly for a laundry list of reasons (identifying as a demon, refusing to “play the victim,” using this as a wedge to drive between Charlie who loves sinners and Lucifer who hates them, etc etc etc)

Idk. I just think it’s neat.

Jonathan Joss was an Indigenous, gay man who was murdered on the first day of Pride month as well as Indigenous History Month. He died protecting his trans husband. Homophobia and racism aren’t marks of the past, and this is a heart breaking reminder of that.
