There is a reason that women, both straight AND queer, love a good queer male romance story. There is a reason that of all the books in the Game Changer series, it was the one with Ilya Rozanov and Shane Hollander that got made the centre piece of the show. Even for fans who love hockey, for whom hockey might be part of the draw, hockey IS NOT the hook in Heated Rivalry.

The biggest hook is having two people who are EQUALS. Two people who are respected, who respect each other. The pressures they are under are real, but no part of that pressure is one being automatically assumed less important or relevant than the other. That dynamic is so difficult to capture when you tell stories about hetero relationships (especially in sports ball settings) because our society rarely gives women equal respect. It CERTAINLY does not equally respect a male hockey player and a female figure skater, fucking please.

The second biggest hook is the way two hockey bros in love can be used to subvert expectations about gender performance and sexual orientation. You can't even begin to do that shit with the ice version of "the jock and the cheerleader."

And you know, I haven't read Icebreaker. It could be a very decent story for all I know. But the fact that this so widely misses the mark stands. The flood of "hockey romance" shows is to be expected, and will continue to demonstrate very heteronormative-purposely-obtuse decision making by execs.

"going out to get milk" is a common turn of phrase used to describe a man abandoning his family.

the "milkman" is a common figure in stories depicting a woman's infidelity and adulterous affair.

this implies that the ability to provide milk would both decrease the likelihood of a man abandoning his wife and children, as it would eliminate the need for leaving to get milk AND would secure that man's marriage, as his wife would have no need to seek milk from an extraneous source.

therefore, all men should produce milk, through various means such as:

- being a cow

- being an almond

- being a woman

- being a coconut

- being in the omegaverse

- being an oat

Chik-fil-le sandwich

INGREDIENTS:

4 hamburger buns, split

1 head green leaf lettuce, leaves separated

1 beefsteak tomato, sliced

20 dill pickle slices

FOR THE CHICKEN

2 boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 cup dill pickle juice

1 ½ cups milk, divided

1 cup peanut oil

1 large egg

½ cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar

Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

DIRECTIONS:

Place a chicken breast on a cutting board. With your hand flat on top of it, carefully slice the chicken in half horizontally. Trim excess fat as needed.

In a large shallow baking dish, combine chicken, pickle juice and ½ cup milk; marinate for at least 30 minutes. Drain well.

Heat peanut oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

In another large shallow baking dish, whisk together remaining 1 cup milk and egg. Stir in chicken to coat and drain excess milk mixture.

In a gallon size Ziploc bag or large bowl, combine chicken, flour and confectioners’ sugar; season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Working in batches, add chicken to the skillet and cook until evenly golden and crispy, about 4-5 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate.

Serve chicken immediately on burger buns with green leaf lettuce, tomato and pickles.

We need to be clear, Hudson Williams is facing a very special kind of racism, one that those of mixed heritage deal with all the time. Having part of your heritage be white means you get hit with Schrödinger's privilege. Either you are getting special treatment because of your historically marginalized identity, or you are getting special privileges because of your white identity.

As soon as Heated Rivalry got popular, I asked my partner "How long do you think it will take for people to find 'evidence' that Hudson is problematic?" And the "evidence" against people of colour in general, and those of mixed heritage specifically, is always from anonymous sources, out of context, often old and usually working real hard to pit the person in question against marginalized groups. The pattern is so predictable and blatant, you have to be purposely ignorant to miss it.

Anyway, cool that Hudson is being dragged for something someone else did TO him, something that is essentially a fucked up teenaged edgelord hate crime (cause drawing a white supremacy propaganda symbol on a person of colour is super fucked up). Love to hear someone demand an apology from the person who held the marker, but we all know that people don't want "accountability" they just want to punish Hudson for being successful.

Anyway. Fuck BuzzFeed and all the other media vultures that consistently feed this shit.

Last year I started designing a series of Coat of Arms, themed in the spirit of Pride Month and using different mythological creatures as heraldic animals. I now aim to turn these designs into wearable pins and will be running a Kickstarter in Julyto fund this endeavor!

In addition to these 5 designs I wish to be able to crowdfund enough to be able to also manufacture the following pins and identities:

I have found a very trustworthy local manufacturer, who has already shown the quality of their craftsmanship with the first batch of test pins I received, just look at the detail they were able to produce!

Since I try to support local manufacturers, which produce pins with fair wages and are more ethical than outside of Europe, the pins are more expensive to create than through the usual pipeline via Asia.

I therefore seek to crowdfund the expenses since they would be more than I can afford. I have always been a voracious reader. I did Junior Great Books every year it was offered at school. I checked off every single one of the 100 books on the AP Prep list over the summer before my freshman because I could. I was named poet laureate of my high school graduating class. And my appetite for reading and writing didn't change as I grew up. So when I say that I have read plots that would put award winning authors to shame, prose that brought me to tears, sex scenes better than the most hyped erotica out there in fanfic, I do not say that lightly. There is no question that fanfiction can be extremely well executed.

But what makes fanfiction one of the MOST legitimate forms of creative writing in our modern era is that unlike the current publishing industry, fanfic is diverse, boundary pushing AND best of all cultivates community through dialogue between writers and readers.

So anyway, keeping being amazing my fellow fanfic authors. You are valid artists creating legitimate art.

It’s almost time to sign up for 007 Fest!

What is 007 Fest?

007 Fest is an annual month-long celebration in July of all things Bond!

The primary goals of 007 Fest is to create anything and everything relating to James Bond and to celebrate the fandom community. We will have prompts, activities, and hangouts in Discord to chill with other members of the fandom from around the world. 

This year, the storyline we are following is the MI6 leadership’s attempt to run some internal team bonding activities in a four-week event they are calling The A.N.E.M.O.N.E. Games. Each week will feature a different theme—Respect, Creativity, Courage, and Integrity—and have activities planned by different MI6 branches. With so many irons in the fire, the chances of it going smoothly are minimal. 

This is where you all come in! As various members of the MI6 staff or even outside consultants, you’re being roped into helping plan and execute activities, and prove that MI6 does actually have some sense of teamwork despite the usual chaos.

Each week in July, we will ask you to set personal goals for yourself. The overall goal completion rate in the Fest participant population will determine how well The A.N.E.M.O.N.E. Games go in the story. A little chaos isn’t awful, but by helping each other complete goals by the end of the month, M might be convinced that everyone deserves a raise.

I don’t write or art! Can I still participate?

Absolutely! If you want, you can only make social goals—hosting or joining watch parties or Discord chats, for example. 

We also have fun immersive goals/scavenger hunt activities that don’t involve writing or arting.

And if you want to make a “hold my beer” level of goal, we also offer prompt tables and other challenges!

You can also participate without goals during certain weeks or the whole month if you want! 007 Fest is as chill or as high-key as you want to make it.

How can I sign up?

Sign-ups will be open June 1st through June 15th! Just fill out the form and we’ll contact you around June 18th with more information. If you’d like to sign up after the 18th, you can, it will just take the mods a little longer to get you plugged in.
