Skrills are not native to the archipelago and probably come from Europe. This is due to their coloration, diet, behavior, and abilities. The skrill is a medium sized strike class dragon that is said to ārival the nightfuryā. It gains power from storms and can redirect lighting.Ā
Skrills are confirmed to prey on other dragons, primarily the singetail. Singetails are not common to berk or the archipelago and are found south of berk, this infers that theyāre not generally from the area. the skrill is the only dragon that hunts the singetail and are perfectly specialized in taking them down. It would make sense that the skrill would also be from a different area to hunt singetails.Ā
Storms harnessing is the defining power of the skrill, they will locate storms and channel electricity and store the energy. Lighting storms are most common in warm environments. Making the archipelago an unsuitable area for the skrills to live.Ā Hence why this skrills most suitable area to live is most likely southern Europe
reasons for picking southern Europe, is the fact that the skrill has a skull suitable for eating and catching fish. A narrow but roundish a jaw. Their purple coloration also raises an eyebrow due to it being a constant in most skrills we see in the franchise, canonically most if not all have some purple coloration. In birds, predominantly purple-colored birds are found in warmer climates and is usually caused by selective mating or diet. Singetails, fish, and electric eels probably wouldnāt cause this, (the deathsong is also slightly purple and can eat electric eel so it might be possible but highly unprobeable). I think it's most likely that the purple coloration is for mating, the Peacock like patterns on the inside of their wings could also be attributed.
One of the problems to this theory is the fact that we see two skrills in the archipelago and the Vikings have general information on them. Well, my explanation for that is that skrills hibernate, especially when lightning storms become scarcer. It would explain why they have the large claws on their wings; my theory is that they use those to burrow into a cold area and hibernate till the storms come back. This is my best explanation because it is stated that the spines on their back are used to channel electricity, not the claws. The hibernation theory would explain why the berserkers or are there Vikings wouldnt witness a skrill, because of hibernation. I believe that the skrill in the ice accidentally got stuck because it went too far up north yrt survived due to its high body temperature. Their stats are kind of off from what is exhibited by skrills in the show, I think this is because Vikings only witnessed the skrills that were coming out of hibernation thus underpowered and caught at their worst.
This is a bit more into deeper theory but skrills and nighfuries could be related. They have similar stats, powers, and body structure, there could be distant relatives and could come from Europe. Grimmel is Seated to be from Europe and be hunted nightfuries to extinction (which I think is total bs). If skrills and nighfuries are related that could mean They both could be from Europe and far away from Berk.Ā

please help me- i used to be pretty smart but iām having so much trouble grasping the concept of diegetic vs non-diegetic bdsm!
gfkjldghfd okay first of all I'm sorry for the confusion, if you're not finding anything on the phrase it's because I made it up and absolutely nobody but me ever uses it, but I haven't found a better way to express what I'm trying to say so I keep using it. but now you've given me an excuse to ramble on about some shit that is only relevant to me and my deeply inefficient way of talking and by god I'm going to take it.
SO. the way diegetic and non-diegetic are normally used is to talk about music and sound design in movies/tv shows. in case you aren't familiar with that concept, here's a rundown:
diegetic sound is sound that happens within the world of the movie/show and can be acknowledged by the characters, like a song playing on the stereo during a driving scene, or sung on stage in Phantom of the Opera. it's also most other sounds that happen in a movie, like the sounds of traffic in a city scene, or a thunderclap, or a marching band passing by. or one of the three stock horse sounds they use in every movie with a horse in it even though horses don't really vocalize much in real life, but that's beside the point, the horse is supposed to be actually making that noise within the movie's world and the characters can hear it whinnying.
non-diegetic sound is any sound that doesn't exist in the world of the movie/show and can't be perceived by the characters. this includes things like laugh tracks and most soundtrack music. when Duel of Fates plays in Star Wars during the lightsaber fight for dramatic effect, that's non-diegetic. it exists to the audience, but the characters don't know their fight is being backed by sick ass music and, sadly, can't hear it.
the lines can get blurry between the two, you've probably seen the film trope where the clearly non-diegetic music in the title sequence fades out to the same music, now diegetic and playing from the character's car stereo. and then there are things like Phantom of the Opera as mentioned above, where the soundtrack is also part of the plot, but Phantom of the Opera does also have segments of non-diegetic music: the Phantom probably does not have an entire orchestra and some guy with an electric guitar hiding down in his sewer just waiting for someone to break into song, but both of those show up in the songs they sing down there.
now, on to how I apply this to bdsm in fiction.
if I'm referring to diegetic bdsm what I mean is that the bdsm is acknowledged for what it is in-world. the characters themselves are roleplaying whatever scenarios their scenes involve and are operating with knowledge of real life rules/safety practices. if there's cnc depicted, it will be apparent at some point, usually right away, that both characters actually are fully consenting and it's all just a planned scene, and you'll often see on-screen negotiation and aftercare, and elements of the story may involve the kink community wherever the characters are. Love and Leashes is a great example of this, 50 Shades and Bonding are terrible examples of this, but they all feature characters that know they're doing bdsm and are intentional about it.
if I'm talking about non-diegetic bdsm, I'm referring to a story that portrays certain kinks without the direct acknowledgement that the characters are doing bdsm. this would be something like Captive Prince, or Phantom of the Opera again, or the vast majority of bodice ripper type stories where an innocent woman is kidnapped by a pirate king or something and totally doesn't want to be ravished but then it turns out he's so cool and sexy and good at ravishing that she decides she's into it and becomes his pirate consort or whatever it is that happens at the end of those books. the characters don't know they're playing out a cnc or D/s fantasy, and in-universe it's often straight up noncon or dubcon rather than cnc at all. the thing about entirely non-diegetic bdsm is that it's almost always Problematicā¢ in some way if you're not willing to meet the story where it's at, but as long as you're not judging it by the standards of diegetic bdsm, it's just providing the reader the same thing that a partner in a scene would: the illusion of whatever risk or taboo floats your boat, sometimes to extremes that can't be replicated in real life due to safety, practicality, physics, the law, vampires not being real, etc. it's consensual by default because it's already pretend; the characters are vehicles for the story and not actually people who can be hurt, and the reader chose to pick up the book and is aware that nothing in it is real, so it's all good.
this difference is where people tend to get hung up in the discourse, from what I've observed. which is why I started using this phrasing, because I think it's very crucial to be able to differentiate which one you're talking about if you try to have a conversation with someone about the portrayal of bdsm in media. it would also, frankly, be useful for tagging, because sometimes when you're in the mood for non-diegetic bodice ripper shit you'd call the police over in real life, it can get really annoying to read paragraphs of negotiation and check-ins that break the illusion of the scene and so on, and the opposite can be jarring too.
it's very possible to blur these together the same way Phantom of the Opera blurs its diegetic and non-diegetic music as well. this leaves you even more open to being misunderstood by people reading in bad faith, but it can also be really fun to play with. @not-poignant writes fantastic fanfic, novels, and original serials on ao3 that pull this off really well, if you're okay with some dark shit in your fiction I would highly recommend their work. some of it does get really fucking dark in places though, just like. be advised. read the tags and all that.
but yeah, spontaneous writer plug aside, that's what I mean.

The HTTYD fandom has a problem with transphobia and racism.
There. I said it.
Even large httyd blogs here on tumblr have a problem with transphobia and racism. Not naming names and I am NOT telling people to go out and harass them if they know who I am talking about. If you do that shit, even anonymously and I find out who you are, I will be blocking your ass point blank.
DISCLAIMER: this isnāt a āWE HAVE A RIGHT WINGER TRANSPHOBE IN OUR MIDST,ā callout post, I do want to give this specific person the benefit of the doubt, because despite the fact that one of their AUs has two of the most common anti-queer/trans stereotypes/beliefs in said AU, I do genuinely hope that this isnāt the case, and theyāre just misinformed, however unbelievably stupid the idea is that someone who so loudly totes themselves as being pro-lgbtq WOULDNāT know anything about these being harmful stereotypes towards queer people. (Trans people in specific.)
I go in depth on this, so I put it under a read more.
I will not be arguing or ādebatingā with people trying to defend racism and bigotry, even if it is born out of sheer ignorance. Instead of shooting the messenger, do better. This criticism is not made with ill will or bad intentions, because I genuinely adore this franchise, and I hate how much of the fandom can be so bigoted for no reason other than blind ignorance (in some cases.). This is your only warning you will get, that your asks will get ignored or deleted by me.
Anyways, that specific AU, to sum it up, has Hiccup being born as an AFAB individual, and, apparently due to Berk either being misogynistic (??) towards the chiefās only daughter, Hiccup is essentially raised as a boy instead of a girl, until race to the edge, in which Hiccup falls in love with Viggo and detransitions because she wants to be with Viggo.
This is an incredibly TL;DR short version of said AU because i genuinely donāt want to be here all day, but there is specifically, if you noticed, no way around it even when looking into the original AU lore post that this is, essentially just what happens within said AU,
Two of the most common things someone has been told if theyāre gay/trans/queer, etc is that the right man can āfixā you and your quote on quote ādelusionsā of being anything other than cisgender and straight. (Especially if you happen to be a woman/afab, but I wonāt get into that atm ig.)
This is also an EXTREMELY COMMON stereotype we see in media. To word it easier, āYou only need a good man/woman to āfixā you and cure you of you being trans/gay/any other flavor of queer.ā I hear this one a lot, because I happen to be a sapphic asexual and have been for about seven years at this point. (Iām 21 now, do the math.)
Not only is this harmful rhetoric built on nothing but a lie, but to have this inside of an AU and then claim your ānot transphobicā when you had your trans character detransition specifically just because they wanted to have children is both insane and falling into said harmful rhetoric that will teach people that it is okay to think like that because literally no one has any media literacy anymore.
The second problem is the idea that āthis child was groomed in some manner into not identifying with their biological sex, be it by their parents/the schools, etc.ā I unfortunately have conservative family members. This is exactly how they think, in both of these. The only reason I am not like my family is because I am capable of doing research and I have basic human empathy towards people who are not myself or towards people who do not think like me in my box and I realized that after my own fucking mother told me that sheād force me to have my rapists baby if I was ever impregnated via rape that made 10 year old me realize that my familyās idea of ācaring about othersā was a facade.
My mother STILL routinely spews the fact that trans people are only trans because of the fact that they are groomed into it by the school system or the government or their parents or itās a mental illness that needs to beācuredā.
And the entire reason I am going into these viewpoints and these ideas is simply because these are the kind of people that would be satisfied with this kind of story arc, when in general httyd 1 is already kind of a transgender allegory.
You CANNOT state that you are an ally to the lgbtq, and then turn around and have an AU that specifically justifies the kind of rhetoric that states that queer people are ONLY queer because of being groomed/forced into it while ALSO stating that the only way to FIX a queer person is to force them into a straight relationship while stripping them of what makes them WHO THEY ARE, in the first place.
And before those āerm but itās FICTION,ā fuckers come at me, yes. It is fiction. However, not only has fiction been used as a form of propaganda for centuries, but this AU is a problem because it is JUSTIFYING AND ROMANTICIZING these ideas that are INHERENTLY ANTI-QUEER. The justification and romanticization in you fictional works of negative and incredibly harmful ideology is not only BAD, but itās genuinely harmful and WILL result in real harm coming to real people.
ESPECIALLY UNDERNEATH THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.
This SHOULD NOT have to be said.
The second point is that fetishization ā proper representation. Why am I saying this, you ask?
This fandom, GENUINELY has a problem, now that I am an adult capable of putting my big boy reading glasses on because my frontal lobe is more developed (unlike what I would assume of some of these individuals.) is that this fandom has an absolutely fucking MASSIVE PROBLEM of fetishizing trans people, trans men specifically. (And this is a growing problem across a LOT of other fandom spaces as well.)
For example, the absolute obsession this fandom has with trans men and mpreg.
Mpreg is by definition, in my opinion a fetishization of femininity, and is also based HEAVILY in misogyny (besides me genuinely being traumatized as a victim of rape myself, and the idea of pregnancy to me is the #1 ickiest thing to ever happen to me or one of my characters/comfort characters/blorbos. I cannot stand the idea of it. I want to throw up.)
āOh, Maea, how is it based in misogyny?ā I hear you ask. Well, the fact is that Mpreg in a lot of gay or queer fanfic is specifically used to force a mlm relationship into having heteronormative stereotypes forced onto one or both of the individuals in the relationship. This is inherently harmful as MLM relationships generally do not have traditional āmaleā or āfemaleā roles. In fact, forcing āmasculineā or āfeminineā roles in relationships regardless of if they are gay or not, is gross, but simply because itās fucking sexist.
The fact that I bring up mpreg, is that the httyd fandom specifically only uses it on trans male characters that they headcanon as trans simply because they want to force a character to have a heteronormative gender relationship without actually genderbending them, even if this is subconscious. Or they just have a pregnancy kink, which is equally problematic, due to that being the only reason they want him pregnant in the first place.
The other thing I regularly see when it comes to headcanoning characters as being trans is that as soon as someone says āI think X is transgender,ā automatically the idea of a trans man being used or raped for his bussy is automatically something this fandom goes wild for.
Iām being entirely honest, as a victim of rape who used to post my own fanfics that I used to write because I was a traumatized 16 year old whoās mother refused to let me get an actual therapist who wasnāt through my high school, even if you are writing this for trauma reasonsā¦ why are you posting it online? Iām not going to stop you, of course, but I doubt posting your vent about being a victim of sexual assault is going to be visited very often by people who share a likeminded trauma to you.
We all know, far too well how the internet is.
As for my point about the racism. If you knew me, when I still actually bothered to interact with the httyd fandom via my old blorbo, my biggest criticism was that regardless of how ācanonā you think it is, it is GENUINELY weird that the only character who is actively the only black man, is given the sterotypically racist caricature of being a āsavage brute with no morals.ā
While his very clearly white counterpart, (Viggo Grimborn) is seen as the āredeemable good guy who was actually Hiccupās friend and mentor (and lover, to some people.) this whole timeā when he has arguably committed far more horrific ON SCREEN atrocities than what Krogan has.
I am white, so I am not going to go into as much detail about this as I did with the stuff on the transgender stuff, as it is not my place. However, as someone who is white, I ALSO feel extremely uncomfortable that so many other white people in this fandom feel so entitled to portray the few poc within this fandom in the arguably racist manner of which they do and that is why I tried to notā¦ do thatā¦ when I was active within the fandom.
But I will say, because again, my family is unfortunately conservative, (I AM NOT.) I very often hear people in my own fucking family spewing nonsensical hatred towards poc because āthey are all savages, except for the GOOD ONES.ā or āYou know how *black people* are.ā Along with the ever so lovely āpeople of color/immigrants/black people are all so violent, and are the reason for all of the crime in the country!ā Because simply being a person of color is apparently worse than anything their āGod of the Citrusā (Daddy Donald) has ever done in his life. (Being sarcastic, by the way.)
This is the kind of hateful, racist message you are doting out when you portray Krogan (or any other one of the like three poc in the httyd franchise, but itās specifically Krogan.) as a man who wants nothing more than to cut Hiccup open, torture hiccup, beat Hiccup, and then essentially headcanon him as being asexual and a sadist (whichā¦ oh my fucking god that is literally the only representation that asexual people get in media to top it off. Ew.). Out of the fanfics on ao3, before I was routinely active within the community on the internet, more often than not, ever. Single. Fanfiction did, (and still does) portray Krogan as nothing BUT a savage brute with no feelings who gets off on torturing people.(specifically talking about some users here who shanāt be named. Theyāre big names in the fandom, though so it shouldnāt be too hard to know who Iām talking about.)
It even goes to say that SOME (not all) Viggo Grimborn fans are genuinely some of the worst people I have ever had the horrible displeasure to interact with SIMPLY for the fact alone that they would rather go out of their fucking way to not stop sucking this bastardās cock than to arguably think about the fact of saying that VIGGO GRIMBORN is in any way DESERVING of any kind of a redemption arc, when he in fact, did not even GET one. Him ādyingā for Hiccup was the writers simply being lazy, bite my ass if you disagree.
Itās not sad. We should not be feeling sad for the āpoor whittle white boy who did nothing wrongā when you turn around and treat the black man who arguably had the ability to canonically be redeemed due to the fact that he already had a very clear understanding of dragons and also was under threat of being tortured or killed by his ābossā for the smallest of mistakes as the literal fucking Antichrist, despite CLAIMING to not be racist.
Eret is only ever seen and characterized as an extension of Hiccup or as an extension of a ship, which is just objectification at its finest, and the very same thing happens with Viggo Grimborn and Krogan being literally the only content/fanart I ever made getting any kind of positive attention on this website. Which was hard, as Krogan was my favorite character and my blorboā¦ my little guy. I really liked him as a character and thought there was so much of him that could have been expanded upon other than him just being some āsavageā that the fandom likes shoving him with, or dumbing him down to nothing but a lame plot device expected to forgive the man who had brutally abused him for two decades, like in one fanfiction I have read. (Genuinely that is the only fanfiction that I have ever ragequit while reading due to how shallow and toxic that message is.)
That being said, Iāve been chewing on this for an hour. I might have more at some point, but the point being said is that the fandom struggles with being sheerly incompetent and closed minded when it comes to doing any form of actual reasearch, and then being mad at people when they point out that it isnāt okay to sterotype or fetishize dark topics because they are mature topics that are required to be handled with care if someone actually wants to create good stories.
Romanticizing racism, sexism, abuse, and rhetoric that is anti-queer is genuinely horrible, because of the fact that it portrays the topics in a positive light and can cause actual harm to people in real life who might be suffering through a relationship that is lie that, or have family members who believe those things.
I should not have to say this. If you are going to portray a topic that you are unfamiliar with or you donāt want to do it properly without fetishization, or utilizing harmful racial stereotypes because itās ācanonā to you, then you should not be posting or talking about that topic or that character, regardless of if you have been through that sensitive subject before in real life because it is clear that you do not properly understand the weight of which your ignorance is doing to others you share a fandom space with that is on a PUBLIC platform such as tumblr.
It is very simple sometimes to say āI do not think I am properly educated enough on this subject.ā Or something of the sort, If someone ever asks you something.
