I don’t want to be the woke friend but I saw so many people saying that Donna Tartt is using those words because that’s how it was back then and how she makes it more believable, but honestly? I don’t see the point in her bringing up variations of words like this. It does nothing to the story.

That hateful language is used in The Secret History book and she says it in her audiobook also. Though one can argue that the way it is used in The Secret History is to do within the narrative of Mr Hundy being a racist opportunist in the part of the book where Richard and Charles set foot in the cheaper establishment to eat.

That word actually does absolutely nothing for the story written clear as day onto paper from Donna Tartt — that being a white woman who is not permitted to use such language. Instead what she should have written was, ‘Mr Hundy said some terrible thing that I won’t bear to repeat’. Richard then could have gone into more detail surrounding what he meant so the reader would then be able to form a conclusion of their own.

Also it is not anything to do with ‘woke’ or whatever you’re using that word in context to. ‘Woke’ is a word that is not necessary for what is shown here.

The word “woke” was obviously meant ironically (though now that I see your reply, I guess not so much), since every time people say something like this, they get called “woke.” I’m pretty sure it’s just a meme…

Furthermore, I don’t think that kind of language has any real place in The Secret History either, since it’s clear the author uses it for purposes other than relevance. You can’t really argue that it belongs there, because the author seems to use those terms at random; I’m pretty sure she just wanted to include the words, and that’s it. Of course you could make reasons and say she wanted to portray Hundy as a bad person, but the relatively good characters she created also use the same words, so I can’t see how the point still stands.
